Yesterday, at 3 o'clock P. 8., a committee of
citizens who had been delegate] for that purpose,
waited upon P. T. Herbert, at the St. Nicholas
Hotel, with a view of presenting to him the pe
tition which had bees signed to forward to Wash
ington. The Committee, through their Chair
man, Mr. J.ll. Brown, addreesed Herbert sub
stantially ae follows.
"Sow We have blea delegated by your fellow
citizens to wait upon you and tender you this
package, which enclosee a petition of about two
thousand persons, residents of this State, reeking
you to select some other Locality for a residence.
,The duty which has been imposed, upon us is a
painful one, and wo deeply regrgt the necessity
that has made our prisent mission to you; but,
having been delegated with power to call upon
you, and make known the wishes of our fellow
-Mee-as, we place this domunent in' our posses
