hundred million 't ' gigat 'product. All this
-east aggregate of $4,600,000,000 is created by
the people of one confederacy, etch one partici.
pating in the great Union that gives 113' thb
power to accumulate this magnificent producl.
But while we see that we aro parts of one Cm)
federaey, we also see that th at confederacy i
divided by a dim, shadowy, Line, to which a po -
tion of the statesmen and of the peoipe of tl
country never for the last fifty years allowed n
to close our' eyes. - I allude to the lino which
divides the elaveholding from the nonotlavehold
ing States; and you will pardon me for speakingl
as I mutt perforce speak, of the interests, sea
timents and principles of the different classes o'
people composing the American States. Of that
product $4,500,000,000 three fourths are coati.
bated by the Intelligence and rigg¢p t arms of the

people of the South. They, ea s ir right, tab
their own course, and contribute, as is thei
right, that which they think proper to the great
objects - for which we are united together as ono
people; and that is, for the development of the
Material interests of the northern portion of the
continent of America, which God has gifen no
as our heritage. Of the $4,500,000,000, not
more than twelve or thirteen hundred millions
are contributed by the elaveholding States. Of
this I complain not. Let us see bow this ie di
vided. Of the $1,600,000,000 of agricultural
Rodeo* the Southern States contribute 45 per
cent; of the $1;500,000,000 of mechanics! and
manufacturing product', the Southern States con
, tribute 20 per cent, or one fifth.of the whole; of
the $1,200,000,000 of commerce, • the Southern
States contribute less than 20. per cent ' Gentle-!
men, the reason of this apparent and palpable: ,
I need not halcyon why itis. 'ln the South there
is one man down, and another man holding him
' there. There is one portion of the people doing
nothing, and-another portion Of the same people
helping them do nothing [Laughter]. It is
this that contributes to the deficit which extent
in the fifteen Southern States of this confede
racy, in the sum total of the annual industrial
product of this vast empire.
Mr. Banks, after a farther consideration of
questions in the above connection, pissed to the
others bearing upon the matter of emigration to
the west, and spoke as follows:
"When a boy in the little village where I lived
I remember, as among the first things I saw,
young men starting off for the then unpopnleal
bat still beautiful and fertile Seth of , Ohio, I
look over the records which have come to us
from ere of the great States of the West, the
granary of the world [applause] and I find that
of the five millions of people of those five States
more than trio hundred thousand of them are
from Marstarameetts and the other five New Eng
land States. [Applause.] In these same five
Western Slates there are 800,000 men to day,
living, breathing and acting for the good of the
country, determined to see justice done to all
sections of the country; but who are still true to
the priootplee °four fathers and oar Institutions.
. Of these 5,000,000, more than 800,000 were
cradled in the City and Stele of New York,
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the three Middle
States. [Applaise.] Th:a has been going on
for the last half century. Oat of the 5,000,000
of people now inhabiting Ohio, Indiana, Ninon-
Bin, Illinois and-lowa, more than 1,000,000 of
them were born in New England end in the five
Middle States; 20 per cent of the whole country
representiog us, for they ate on fathers, broth
ers and our children. What they do we do;
their history, great and glorierai as it will be, is
our history, and adds as mach to our honor as
their own. [Applause.] Now, fellow-citleens
is it criminal .In -New York, Penoryinala or
New England to do for Kansas or Nebras
ka that which they did for Ohio. Indiana,
Illinois, Wl:eon/fin and Iowa? It is not
a crime, but is an act of Insilco, overflowing
from that excess of our activity and our excess
of mental and physical energy which lends oar
race broadcast over the world, wherever there
is a place or spot upon which a man can stand,
or a thing for human hands to do [Applause].
Then I say that this pretense of wrong upon our
part is a worse wrong than the thing thus done.
I look not exactly with approbation upon the '
manner in which every man has gone to Moms;
but here is the great fact that wa have sent
men there with property, othilizstion and ener
gy, to aggrandize that section of the confedera
cy, and it is one of -the bright marks in the
civilization of the Eastern and middle States
that eo long as there to stberitege that God de
signs to open for the Wilfare of the human
race, eo long will He put it into the hearts lg : -
oar people to go there and the what nan be dente
for their own good_ and for the good of Others.
[Applause]. Let rartern for a ganef moment
from the seens of violence; extermination, con
flagration, cistll,. war and murder that have
stained every poillett, , of the fields of Kansas;
and I see the same epllit of violence and wrong
has entered your halliatCongress. I see there
a representative Otil sovereign State etrioken
down by brutal violtspceand brought to the verge
of death, if not to Gist which is worth than
death. There is no wrong in Kansas, no murder,
no conflagration, no assassination that can equal
the great wrong inflicted by thin same spirit of
violence upon one of the Senators of a sovereign
State of nits Union. The mind of man cannot corn
prebend the platoon of the wrong. If Sumner
passes away another men have passed away, if his
place in our streets , our halls of legislation sod
schools of philosophy is made vacant as
are the places once occupied by a Webster, Clay
or Calhoun, still the world would move on, now
*ethos, unlnowlog even the lass of one of ate
Illustrious men; but if the act' by 'which be is
