This statement having . been authoritatively
denied, Mr. Cook made an affidavitoputtiog the
'matter In a Mersa! shape. His affidavit Is as
follows: •

please to ask me.' I said, 'Mr. Fremont, Ido

to ben believer in the Roman Catholic faith?"—

"Have you at any time, either Wore or sines
your marriage, professed or acknowledged your a. believer on the doctrines cf the Roman

ately asked if I was mantled. I replied that I

muted to receive Col. Fremont'a denial as deal

My Potter exclaimed, "There is another good
Fremont man made, Coloael. Thin is what we
are doing and mean to do every day." I replied
"Yes, Its. Fremont, I suppese I have got to rote
for you; or forfeit a thonsaad dollars. However,
I think I shall prefer voting for you." He ex
tended his hand and pre me a,hearty shake,
and replied, "I thank you, and allow me to con
gratulate yen upon your decision."
I then remarked to CoL Fremont that I had
two very important reasons for making limas
questions. One was that I was very well ae
quainted with a highly Intelligent Benign Cath
olio, whom believed to be well ,posted in all
the forms and ceremonies of the Romig, Church,
and he had. Informed me that a Catholio
would not dare to marry a couple unless ono or
both of them professed to bo a Roman Catholle,
for marriage was one of their ,religiousmore
mentse..and oonaidered the mosteamed of all.
' "The other reason was that I' entleman who
professed to be well acquainted with Col. Fre
mont while is California, told me , that It was
there generally understood that Col. Fremont
was a Roma* Catholic.
Colonel Fremont replied in mbetanoo as fol
lows r—"ln reference to my marriage, all that I
can Bey is that I hare taken little interest in the
tenets of that church, and know but little about

As Messrs. Moffat, Cpmstock and Potter,
were prment at this Interview, they hare made
a counter affidaitt, which we extract:
"The undersigned wore present with Mr. B. P.
Cook at an interview - with Col. Fremont, oon
turning which he bee published a statement and
affidavit in the Commercial Advertiser of this
city. This affidavit contains many inaccuracies
of detail In reference to what preceded that in
, terriew, but we , shall notice only grave omia
tionS and material misstatements in that part'
isidch related to the interview itself. , , Mr. Cook
was introduced as. Fillmore not a Fremont
man. lie straightway proceeded to interrogate
Col. Fractund in regard to his present and put
religions belief, and was answered promptly and
explicitly, as Mr. Cook has represented,
That he was not, and never had been, and had
serer.professed to be, a Cathollo ; but It Is not
true that he said, In refinence to the deleptlon
that was waiting for him, U Mr. Cook elates,
