with him, dinet or indirect, verbal or written.
On the other hand, my feeling of friendship' and
admiration for fdr.'Boonamo, as a man, are of
no ordinary charanter, and are, strengthened by
years of friendly intimacy, and reciprocal mots of
kindness, uninterrupted to this time by a single
misunderstanding or =pleasant: feeling; and , '
would at any time defend him promptly and inaz

utation. I belie* him to be a man of distin
guished ability, of high Integrity and valuable
experience. Re is eurronnded, too, in Pain

These ties are exceedingly etrong and hard to
sever, especially with one who is naturally of a.
coneervative cast, and allow to change old habits
of thought and notion; end I have resisted for
months the convictions that were urging me to

of breaking up old associations and alienating
myself from my old frienda, but all in vein. My
love of country and hatred of oppression would
not allow toy feelings and luoithations either to
delude my judgment or Brill my conacience, and
I am compelled to forfeit my telt-respect by
committing what I believe to be palpably Wrong,

ocratic Patty. ,
I' can see no,' reasonable hope of jostles and
sympathy for the people of - Kansas to the rata
cola of the Democracy. In Its ranks, and with
the power to control its action, are found the
Border Ruffians of Missouri end their accom
plices of tho Booth, who have trampled upon the
Constitution and all the essential principles of
our Government, robbed Kansas of its civil lib
erty and right of suffrage, laid waste 10 territory
withatire and sword, and repudiated even civil

In its platform I find the enunciation of prin
ciplea which would pot the rope about thenecks
of men for exercising the Constitutional right of
petitioning Congress-for a State Government - as
a redrew; of grievances far wore than thoee
whin* led to the war of the Revelation, and a
declaration . eligmatising as "armed realatanos
to law," the moderate and justifiable self.defenoa
of men shainefally and infamously oppresse4 by
ruffian rioleitie and outrage, beyond all human
endurance.
I find the whole party of the nation assembled
in National Convention, with but one Individual
dissent, expressing its "unqualified admiration"
of an AdministratlortArhich has lent Itself al the

upon Kansan, and by itS venality and imbecility I
brought the country to an intestine war.
I find all its representatives in Coigrese, with
threelndlvidnal exceptions, laboring earn est rat, by speech and vote, to cover up the iniqui
ties of this Administration and the Border Ruf
fians of Missouri, and to sopprele a fair innsti
gation of outrages which shook both humanity
and republicanism, and defy tho Constitution
and the laws.
I find these came representatives, after the
-truth was elicited In spite of their efforts, still
refusing to relieve the people from a code of
laws Imposed upon them by a - foreign army, and
still rehiring to admit them into the ,Union, only
for reasons which, in the cases of nine existing
Btatee, bad been declared untenable and of no

other; of them treating it, with perversions, calm
representations and false issues; and others m
iring openly the tide of deo oppressor.; but no
one of them advocating the cause of Renate, or
favoring her admission under the Free State
Constitution adopted by her people.
In the public demoustratlona end procesaions
of the party, I find banners and devices contain

wrongs, calculated, as no doubt they must be
latended, to prepare the masses for a continual

Gen. Reid, a rellablo and intrepid officer, from
Ids camp on Indian Creek, proceeded to Cedar
Creek, cud on Thuroday warning last proceeded
thence, it is supposed, to to-operate with Gen.
Richardson, who Is commander-ba-chief of the
Territorial Militia. Reid is said to have with
him about 600 men, and at his conjunction with
Richardson, it in supposed the combined forces
immediately proceeded to Lawrence. Whether
collision has followed or , will follow thin
movement, it is Impossible to soy, as a large
body or United States troops are understood to
