tional candidate as Mr. Buchanan, and the
North would gain nothing by the substitution of
one for the other. Standing tbus on substan-
Sally the same-ground as regards the only vital
question at issue in this contest, it is not our•
patine to observe the sympathy which exists
between the leaders of the two parties, and thin
sympathy leveeing warmer, and the iso-oper
aeon more evident, as the contest advances, and
it becomes incontestibly evident (het Mr. Fill
more has not the slightest 'chance of carrying a
eagle State. Since the elections-in the South
ern States have shown that the friends of slavery
extension consider Mr. Buchanan the droned
and eafest candidate to rely upon, and that the
conturis virtually and truly between Buchanan
and Fremont, the Fillmore papers; as wells° lead
ere, which favor the eitension 'of slavery, have
ceased their warfare upon Badman, and Dem
ocratic papers have cured to assail Know
Nothingiszu. Fillmore and Buchanan, Knew
Nothing and Democrat, now llein the eame bed.
They appear to have made a firm nidon, and
the allied foromi hare turned their arms upon
the candidate representing the opposing princi
ple of the Nen-Extension of slivery. , The
leading organs of the Fllbnore party, such as
the Washington Organ, the Philadelphia Nem,
the NaleYerk Express, and the Buffalo Cramer•
eini, go far ahead-of the Buchsoan press In as
tallies the Republican party, and in slandering
Col. Fremont. Buchanan is let done, or spoken
of with evident kindness, while nothing la the
annals of American political warfare, disgusting
as they have been, can equal the vileness of the
New York Express, in Its treatment of Col. Fre
mont. The canting hypocrites who conduct that
paper have evinced -a depth of depravity which
his astonished the "cortntry, sunbeam awakened
tower& it, and its Minch 'AV undisguised
loathing and contempt of men of all puttee.—
Even those who expect to be benefitted by it,—
the feuds of Buchanan and Slavery-Extension
—feel nothing pat utter disgust for the foul
tools they consent to use.
The masses of the Fillmore mon in the Free
States we belive to be honest. If they .supposed
they were to be used 'oy unscrupulous and de
signing leaders to edema* the cause of Buchan
an, they would instantly repudiate their de
ceivers, and unite themselves with their fellow
'cilium in opposing the inroads of slavery. Oar
object is to direct their attention to this uteri
eon of affairs, and to warn them against the con
spiracy to which they are the victims. We are
satistied, that the honest masses of the people
who have been deceived into the idea that there
was some chance of nuns for Mr. Fillmore,
when they dimmer that they are merely used to
help the election of Buchanan, will no longer
consent .to be cheated and hood-winked.
Is there any intelligent man who can believe
for one moment, that a single Southern State
wilt vote for Mr. Fillmore. The very , states
which were relied upon to vote for him, have un
equivocally repudiated him at the late elections,
and there is now no reasonable hope that he can
carry a single Southern State. Ifft was pot for
the purpose of dividing the North, the South
would immediately cease the faros of pretending
to support him. On this subject,- the-following
extract from an editorial article of the Ni,, York

Enrico?' Gams r—lis a late number of the

should be dubbed Hon. H. M. Breckenridge as
he has undoubtedly earned the title Honorabie

, lag hie wed. the impartial mind would eon,
elude that thezentiranan in question was anything
else than honorable.
He arraigns the Republican party as a monster
of Iniquity, presents only heireay taileihny, and
proceeds to condemn in terms characteristic of
the ignorant bigot and ruthless tyrant. 2 lnstend
of littering a syllable against the Republican
platform, its principles and avowed purposes, be
burnows like the scavenger among the purlieus
of filth thrown out by a besotted, prostituted
and slavery-ridden press, and produces the fol
lowing which he says was uttered by Hon. J. R.
Giddings, and which he declares to be a "faith.
fal picture" of Republicanism:
"I look forward to the day when there shall
be a servile insurreation In the South; when the
biaol man, armed With Bridal' bayonets, studied
on by British officers, shall assert his freedom,
and wage lamer of extermination against his
master; when the torch of the incendiary shall
light 'up the towns and cities of the South, and
blot out the last vestige of slavery; and though
I may not mock at their calamity, nor laugh
when their fear cornea, yet I will hail it as the
dawn of a political millenium."
Instead of inquiring whether the above was
ever uttered by Mr. Giddings, he takes It for
granted that it wan because It appeared In a
Border Ruffian paper, and he proceeds at ones
to hurl hie anathemas set. the Republican party.
and avers that Hon. J. B. Giddings should have

In order to quiet the nerves of this sensitive
Judge, I am authorised to tray by Mr. Giddings
himeelf, that he never uttered tho above; It is
false from the beginning to the end in its Incep

In ISA when the South had made suck a

backed down on Oregon, Jelin Quincy Adams,
Mr. Giddings and others endeavored to make
them toe the mark and carry out their vaunted

flourish of trumpets in the eery presence of the
lion of Britain; and Mr. Giddings made a speech
on the abject, which will be found In Jewett di

159, and in which will be seen a true picture of
the attitude of the South in acquiring Texan for
Slavery, with no fear of a poor weak Mexico be.
fore their eyes, and of their wonderful trepida
tion and cowardice when our rights to Oregon
were to be maintained for the benefit of free
dom. Mr. Giddings says:
"But this policy of extending our territory is
theirs, not mine. It originated with southern
gatemen, and was forced upon the nation for
the express purpose of perpetuating slavery.
If God, la his providence, shall overrule their
wicked designs to the subversion of that Genie,
I dial greatly rejoice. Last year our southern
friends expressed great anxiety for "Texas and
the a'Aol of Oregon." Having obtained Texas,
and with It the balance of political power, they
now demand an abandonment of their policy,
and that the Government of the nation be left in
theirtands, and Oregon remain as it is. They
now see difficulties before them: dangers pre.
ant themselves to the further pursuit of their
plan of territorial aggrandisement. They have
suddenly called to mind the deelarai t ion of Brit
, rah statesmen, that "a VA* WISH MI Berm

see in prospect the black regiments at the Brit
