FooM, another member of that body, for words spoken In' debate. clench him, and then challenged him; and they affect to re gard this as a fair offset to the attack on Sum ner. With their usual look in this campaign, they hare got the Story wrong end foremost. Tha facts were precisely the other way. The New York Evening Post tbus narrates the transac- Von: The facts are briefly as fellow : Senator Foote entered the Senate the, lait night of the session, with en uncommonly large brink in his hat, and availed himself of the first opportunity, as is the habit of people with hate than furnished, to make a speech. In the course of his remarks, he re fleeted offensively upon certain California meas ures which had boon Rending before the Senate, and upon the motives of those who advocated them. Col. Fremont immediately left the Senate chamber and sent for Senator Foote to come out. When they met, Col. Fremont told him that he had sent for higrto say that he (Foote)! bad just wed language In reference to the Cali fornia legislation and senators'whlch no gen tleman could coo, and unworthy of an American Senator. Foote immediately struck at Fremont and slightly grazed his face. Senators and offt core who were near, doubtless anticipating some thing of the kind, promptly Interfered and pre vented any further controversy at that time. On the following day Fremont Bent Foote a note by GoVernor Price, of .Ilowdersey, demand ing a retraction of his offensive language, and Foote wrote a retraction which was deemed eat iefaotory by - tho Mends of the reepeotive parties. Every reader must detect the absurdity of the Bnobanier papers' statement, that Fremont chal lenged Foote after having struck him and drawn blood. What, inquires the Lensing Post, should he challenge him for ? If ho bad been tho limi ter, he would scarcely have stood In need of the farther satisfaction of pistols and cbffee, however Senator Foote might have felt about it. There is no parity whatever between the ease ! of Fremont and Brooks. Fremont never lifted pia baud against Foote, but simply.ebaracterised his language as it . deeerved. Foote was the Brooke of the ocoacion, not Fremont. He was the one who, like Brooks, resorted to personal violence, and he was the one who Ilk. Brooks, was ready enough to book out of the coo:menet:- oes when they stared him 'fairly In the face. Funnurs op SPZECILL—some of the Southern Buchanan papers are growling over the tone of a dispatch sent by telegraph to the Buchanan State Convention In New York. It Is a literary cariosity : To W. 0. Cason, Etta., President of the con solidated Democratto Convention of the Now York Democracy:— Mr. Buchanan has received the resolution of the consolidated 00E190111130 of the New York Democracy. Their union at this eventful oriels is one of the grandest events in our history.— Our car will now Weather the storm of fanati cism, and. the Union must and shall be preserved. The whole Southern country will hail this re union as a rainbow In the clouds, promising a re turn 11 the peace and 'harmony which prevailed ha- the good old time among the sister States. JAIHES BUCHANAN. Upon this miserable jumble of words the Cin cinnati Oomourcial remarks : "Mr. BUChal7Bl:ollfigurative style mayperhape be accounted for by the recent receipt and pro bable elaborate testing of that barrel of twenty year old "Old Bourbon." That there was some "noise and contusion" in his head is evident from the notion of a "car weathering the germ." According to his rhetortmit would be fair to say of a locomotive—.. She rides the wares." The Idea thrown out by hitt Buchanan that the Union will be dissolved if he is not elected is supremely immodest in him, as well as rift- Wow. The people owe it to themselves to teach him that the Union leee not depend on the elec tion of any man, and that It can get along as well without him as with htm. There is nothing sectional in this; and the same purport, is made manifest In mother parr graph from Col. Fremont's letter: oln the event of toy election to the Presiden cy, I should enter upon the execution of Its duties vial a aingle•hearted determination to promote the good of the wawa: Somrray, and to direct solely to this end all the power of the Government, Irrespective of party hones and rrgardlest of secUomal rtrife."
