Tim Cants DI WASIZEICITOL—We invoke at•
tuition to the fallowing extract from a pint*
letter from Washington, written by a gentleman
who has every me= of forming a correct judg
ment. It presents a condition of Sap that
should produce determined action. We know
that there already Is the moat intense public feel
ing on the subject, but it Is time that it should
manifest Itself in commensurate tones. The av
alanche of evil Is actually impending. It is ab
solute folly to keep quiet and hope for the boat.
The Repeal of -the Missouri Compromise, the
cause of all our prepent woes, would have never
posed the Rouse of 'Representatives had the
greet cities of the North, and especially this
commercial metropolis, risen in their strength
and protected spinet It, as they might and
should hare done. That neglect they hays rued

1000.
There is great danger that we shall be beaten
on the wretchedly delusive scheme of the Toombs
ane.Douglas coalition.
Oar men need rousing up. Unless we have
from tho North some great and general move
ment, depend upon it the Douglas, or, rather, the
Toombs project, will pus the House. Believe
Dothlog that you hear about the dissatisfaction
of Southern men. They are all deeply anxious
for the =CCM of the scheme. ' It is exactly
what they want, and beelde bringing in Rams
as a Stove State will effect many other objects
now 'rethought of. There is really occasion for
very great alarm. All men of property, all in
tereeted in the maintenance of social and politi
cal order, all desirous of peace, should give their
influence, their time and - their means, to prevent
anything being done to conenmate this conspire
ay for forcing slavery upon Kansers, and bringing
her by fraud into the Union.
This bin, on the part of Douglas, is merely a
piece of tlaaakery. He looks upon it as merely
an expedient to allay irritation for a moment.—
But Toombs, its author, regards and intends it
as a bold and radical measure for setting every
thing in favor of 'Lavin, and for exciting deft
war at the North, which he desires, and has long
sought to effect.
seems to me that our only safety is , in ex
treme energy. The adminietratioti stands ready
to purchase votes enough to pass the bill, and
we have only two Or three to spare. Something
must be done to bring a tremendous pressure to
bear upon .the recreant North Americans. Bay- -
ard Clarke is no, with us, aistao are Barclay
sad Hickman, of Pennsylvania, bat . prodigious
exertions are making to gain them oyer.. These
efforts may be successful. A well known Silver
Grey Whig politician, now s Fillmore K. N., is
here, suppoasdle be charged with a special mis
sion upon Bayard Clarke, end he carried hie in
stuns solar yesterday upon a Republican mem
ber, that he was repulsed with' a Sums insult.
* *
There is, in my view, but one wayof avoiding
war, actual, raging, general civil war. It is
firmness' on the pert of the. North in resisting
any and all attempts to appropriate to Slavery
permanent advantages from the treacherous
outrage of 1854. Abject submission will only
gain ass brief respite. I know Southern men,
In their public characters, well. I appreciate
their policy thoroughly. They do mean to eon
quer the North, and they never made such rapid
strides In that polloy as during the two years
eines the passage of the Nebraska Hi. We
must arouse and organise • great Northern
sentiment; and the ,first definite act to be per
formed is bringing the people to beer upon the
Northern members to prevent the contemplated
eurrender. Hamm. The session must be
brought to an end without any hollow trues with
Slavery AUG Any armistice now. would be
'pent by the South in completing preparations
for war. The time has come to fire all along the
line, and if we do not bring down some of our
adversaries. we are pretty certain to be trampled
down ourseiveo. . • • "

the position of the press of New Jersey as fol•

"There were twenty-two Whig papers In the
State that reached this chloe. Seventeen of them
have the flag of Freinont and Deyton boldly dis
played at their mut-heads. Two of them have
not yet put op the flag, but advocate strong Be

er three run up the Fillmore and 'Donelson flag

fast to it. !Thus the Whig papas orNew Jersey

not exactly neutral but apparently undecided.
There are also six papers in the State that have
been heretoforeneutral tnpoiltics that boldly ad

bare again been in everybody's mouth. The ex

the Queen's levee. Divested of the outrageous
exaggerations of the British presses the facts
are simply these, that Mr. Dallas, accompanied
by a friend, went to the Queen's levee; the

regulations, and both gentlemen, Mr. Dallas
and friend, returned to the embassy to Hurley

"Ott of this trifling incident, the London

an outpouring of vulgar abuse of America, and
Americans generally. As U nettal when the Times

the cry, and for at least two daye, Mr: Dallas
