—Bum°, July 10.—The Kansas Committees
mot at Kremlin flail, yesterday, Goy. Reeder
presiding. The stated object of the Conrentiod
Is to secure, as far aeLteible, unity and effi.
decay of salon eras out the country on be
half of freedom for A committee to
draw up resolutions was appointed. Most of the
union wu consumed in addresses upon the
wrongs and wants of Kansas.
W. Barnes, of New York, and W. F. Malay,
of Illinois, were appointed Secretaries; and Z.
Chandler, of Michigan, W. Penn Clark, of lowa,
and Thomas Russell, of Massachusetts, Vice
Presidents.
A committee of thirteen was appointed to re
port a plan for the aid of Kelm.
A letter was received frion Gen. Lane, reeom
mending routes by which to maroh trims
through lowa and Kenna. Reported to the
Committee.
Eiscoan Ds-T.—This morning the following re
solutions were reported to the Committee end
adopted:
Resolved, That we will proceed to appoint a
National Kansas Committee, of honest and up
right men, to whose discretion the whole con
duct of our sacred cease shall be entrusted; that
said Committee shall be composed of one person
from each iltste, an far as there are States in
which suitable persona can be found, and that
are additional members shall be put upon the
Committee, who are to reside in the city of Chi
cago' and that threw shall oonsiltate a quorum.
and Chicago 'be the usual place of meeting of
the committee.
Resolved. That by all that is precious and
urgent In the claims of Kansas and liberty, we
tall on the friends of justice and humanity, to
organise forthwith State, County, Town and
Township organisation', for the purpose of ob.
'lathing monthly subscriptions of money, to ena
ble the National Committee to bring toe speedy
and aucaesaful close the great work which we
shall Commit to its hands.
Resolved, That the contributions of each
month sitotild not fall short of ono hundred
thousand dollars, and that dose of the present
month should be paid to the Committee by the
first day at August, by the first day of Septem
ber, and lilike manner thereafter.
Resolved, That the Convention recommend to
all emigrants to Kansas to travel through the
State of lowa, and that Congress be urgently
requested to establish a daily mail from Topeka
via Nebraska to lowa City; also a daily mail via
Nebraska to Mount Pleasant and Burlington,
lowa.
Genitt Smith introduced resolutions that arm
ed men moat be sent to Banns to conquer the
armed sun who come against her, and that jus
tification for sending deist is to be found in the
refusal of the eaventhestit to do it, and that the
government, instead of protecting Kansas, is the
great upholder of the oppressloa and outrages
which she stiffen. Other resolutions 14aa ultra
were Introduced by Governor Reeder and others,
and referred to the Committee.
Governor Seeder !joke in favor of th 4 admis
sion of Hansa under the Topeka tdusilrarton;
and in denunciation of the Sonata bill, which he
characterized as designed by !healer° power, to
perpetuate their sway in Bantu. In conclusion
he spoke of Mr. Smith'. resolution as too ultra.
Mr. Smith defended his resolutions as only
recommending the sending of an armed force to
Kansas to resist an armed force already there.
He belayed the time for resistants had arrived.
He had already given all the money he could
spayt for books, provisions sod agrioultaral im
plements for Kansas, and he felt that he was
- eVied upon to contribute means to arm men and
send them oat to fight.
Mr. Smith continued at some length in the
same strain, and was replied to by Gov. Reed
er, who was in favor of waiting • while longer,
not because Kansas bad not received wrongs
enough, but because he thought It better to wait
until an effective blow could be struck. If Riled
fallen to him to use the power of the govern
ment, he would not have waited, but the oppres
sors of Kansas would have, long ere this, been
converted Into heaps of dead men on the fields
of Missouri. He via therefore willing to wait
until they had the power he would have used.—
Bat he did not wish to giro the South notice of
their Intentions by marching armed men into the
territory. He wanted the enemy to have the
first notice ofthe blow in the blow itself. The
Free State party take the ground that they will
exhaust all peaceful remedies, and that being
done, they will resist to the death, and fill the
soil with the dead bodies of their oppressors.
Mr. °mitt Smith suggested that If this chain
of reasoning be correct, the Convention should
sit with closed doors, as the.&mth could not but
know that something waste be done when reso
lutions passed for raising $lOO,OOO per month.
The Convention then adjourned till afternoon.
Animeoz Bisnox.—The committee on reso
lutions reported, declaring the federal actruble
entice an upholder of oppression and outrages
In Kmmas; that the attempt to form alum Into
Eansaimust, at whatever cost, be defeated;
that the billjnat plated by the Senate is decep
tive and fraudulent, redressing no .wrongs, and
only designed to nuke Kansas a Sian State.—
They pledge Increased exertion to make the
State Free, and declare that many precedents
warrant the admission of Kansas under, the To•
peke Constitution.
The Resolutions were adopted.
After some debate, EU Thayer was appointed
General Agent to superintend the formation of
State committee..
A collsotion was then taken up, Gorda Smith
giving $l5OO a month during the war, and
handing in his cheek for the erg instalment.
A resolution was adopted recommending rapt•
lasts to loan settlers suffielent to enable them
to wore pre-emption claims.
After debate touching-the material aid for

The Bailing of the Ilafe of the Atlantic.;
Picts and iotliatioit.
Our readers were funeral days' ednce highly
amused by "the fanciful relation of the Detroit
Advertiser, of the ?algae of the - rate rof ' the
steamer Atlantic, sunk In 1852. This morning
wa were favored with an interview-with E. P.
Harrington, of Westfield, N. Y., the successful
rescuer of the este, and give the items of the
occurrence, which, if it be devoid of wondefal
meetings with tteautful ladies" and 'children, "
Is, nevertheless, very interesting and true. Mr.
Harrington has had three years experience as
a diver, and during the put winter toes been
engaged on the bfkaissippi in his Dulness. As
sociated with him in this undertaking were Mar.
GU Quigley sod Charles Gardner of Glisten
qua, N. Y., and Wm. Newton, of Detroit. They
proceeded in the sohooner Fletcher to the lo
cality of the ateatner Atlantic, Which Iles about
three miles from the extreme point of Long
Point. They arrived there on the 18th of. June,
and that day was used in preparations. On the
19th, Mr. Harrington, encased in Wells le
Gowen'a sub-marine armor, mule his first de
scent This armor is made of two layers of
canvas and one of India rubber, the rubber 00.
copying the middle. It is loons and flexible,
and of course resists no pressure. From in
front of the mouth piooeeds a tube composed of
nine alternate layers of auras and rubber,
with a copper wire coiled Inolde to revent col
lapse. This is flexible too, and being as lon
as the depth to which the diver goes, and the
tipper end being in the open air, accrue pr oper
respiration. The aperture is idle clan inch In
diameter. A wreck-line 'tad previously been
dropped and rested against the side of the
steamer.
Mewed as above described, with leaden shOesi
and with lead weights attached to hishody,
amounting in all to 248 lbs with e,rbpe around
his waist, by which he could be raised to the
surface, and a check or signal line - in his, bend,
the adventurous diver commenced his first de.
scent. He was governed by the wreck line, and
struck the promenade deck' about forty feet aft
the state-room where the Express Company's
Safe was, which was in the third state-room aft
the wheelhouse on the larboard side. He re
mained on deck but one minute. After detcend
log from 60 to 70 feet, depending upon the clear.
new of the sir above, all to dark to the diver,
and he is governed entirely by feeling. The
romantic eights recorded by the a:ideal/at, are
therefore without foundation. The greatest
caution as to entsziglieg tides must therefore be
need, and Mr. ELSZELNOTOS went each time out
aide of the staneMona, moving, se headranced,
his wreck line, so that with such dive he advan
ced newer the state-room. The second dive he
was.three minutes upon deer, the third four,
the-fourth wren. Do the twentieth ho made
four dives, and the time on deck was respec
tively, four minutes, 7 do. 8 do.,and the next
or eighth, six, at which time h reached the
state-room. Previous to this he bad all the
time-been groping about, and twice was on' he
hurricane deck, and ouzo near the maler dock.
The twenty-first ho made seven dweente; times
reepectively, 4,6, 5,3, 6, gaud 8 minutes, and
daring which he vas busyfin breaking iil the
room window, and breaking dowh the. wood
work on the aide and below it, andeacceeded at
last ln getting a line fast to the rang in the lid
of the safe, but finding the aperture he had
made, too small to allow the passage of the safe,
ascended to wait tilt the coming day. Oa the
twenty.-second, the sixteenth dive, being the first
that day, he was on deck sewn minutes, during
which time he sawed through the easing and
panel work and tried to bleak it off with his
hand, but could not The seventeenth he wee
on deck nine minutes, in which be fastened a
lino to the wood-work, and by It the men above
pulled it off. The eighteenth and last descent,
be was on deck eleven minutes, and during It
he eaccowded in fastening a line to the end ring
of the safe, and helping it out of the aperture, it
was raised to a t n le deck of the ischooner. The
perilous work was done, and the adventurous
men upon op erg the safe, or rather iron chest

$31,000 in bills, a email portion of which were

insolvency of banks, and six watches;
two of which were valuable gold ones.
The cheat contained papers for which the Amer
ican Express Co. payed a handsome mileage.—
The Atiaser lieu careened, her larboard aide be
lag 175 feet, and the water on her starboard 160
feet deep. The Edelen about 157 ft. from the

sediment of three or (Bur Tarbes - depth. -He I
could, as we have said, above, see nething,; and
entromitered nothing but the wood work, chains,
glass and the cheat. The water was wry chilly
and Mr. H.'s hands were so numb that he could
not by mere feeling distinguish glue front wend.
It was only by the former's breaking that the
knew its material. He thinks hie strength When
below not more than one-tenth that ho has when
in the open air. -Ho suffered but little from pees
sore except two or three times when such was
the rush of blood to the head, that as he says,
he esw "bright flashes in his helmet, like electric
sparks."
'We have thus been accurate, from justice to
Mr. H. who has thus accomplished a feat never
before, we believe, suocess.al. He is a candid,
fair-spoken man, and is not • little mortified that
any one should have so misrepresented the mat
ter to the editors of the Detroit Advertiser. He
is now in the city, and has boon requested by
many curious persons to make an exhibition of
his manner of proceeding from the steamer
Ocean, and may yet do It at a fut u re day. ,
