SESATIL-Mr. Yulee reported a joint resolu
tion, which panted, appropriating ten thousand
dollars for the continuance of the mail Berrien
between Charleston, South Carolina,and Barons,
during the months of August and eptember, for
which the present contract does not provide.
Senate resumed the consideration of the bill
for'the improvemect of the navigation of the
mouth of the aliselsaippi, which was vetoed by
the President. Slidell spoke in favor of the bill,
showing It to be an important work, and answer
ing the President's objections.
Mr. Case said that In the remarks he propo•
sad to make on this occasion be should not eo
much advert to the particular improvement pro
vided for in the bill before the Senate, the Im
portance of which had been so ably and elo
quently set forth by the two Senators from
Louisiana. As to , the improvements at St.
Mary'e River and St. Clair Flats, in which his
own constituents were more immediately inter
ested, and thloh bad also been vetoed by the
President, no man could fall to perceive that the
views of the President had undergone a radical
change relative to this enbjeot, sizes he sent in
the veto tannage on the giver St' Harbor Bill
two years ago. On that occasion the President
directed, while he could not sustain a general
bill, because it contained some objectionable
items, yet there were tome meritorious objec
tions, and If seperate bills making appropria
tions for them were sent to him, he would ap •
prove and sign them. This was precisely the
course the Senate had pursued. If there were
any objects, national and constitutional, cer
tainly those In the bill which the President had
recently vetoed would come under that head

President's veto, the former by 28 against 10

The House Bill for the admission of Kansas
Into the Union was referred to the Committee

character, similar to those supplied to Members
of the last Congress.
A message was received from the President in
reply to a resolution relative to an appropria
tion heretofore made for procuring from Mr.
Powere, the Sculptor, some work of art to adorn

tiation for Chit purpose Is still pending.

HOME MATTERS.

was created yesterday evening in the vicinity of
fifth end Liberty streets, from tumors circulated
of the murder of it woman named Ana Hopkins
by bet husband, who is the keeper of ■ email
drinking home in the frame building on the cor
ner of Fifth and Liberty etreete.
It appears that between six and seven o'clock

then prevailed• that Mrs. Hopkins bed been

jury found the deceased on a bed up stairs, her
