Sketch •of the Life of Ont. Fremont
In January, 1816, Captain J. C.. Fremont; who
the year before had been ordered by the War
Department to explore a southern -route to Ore.
gon,.arrived anon the frontiers of California,
with a party of engineers,. -Knowing .that the
relations between the United Sates and Mexico
were in a delicate mitten, and that-the authori
ties of the latter were vary-jealous of Americans,
ha took the precaution to leave his party; -and go
alone to Monterey; where with the United States
Consul, Mr. Larkin, he called upon the -*cote
mending general, Casifo, , and made known to
hint his peaceful commission; receiving express
percolation tiwinter in the-valley of Ban Joachim,
where there was plenty of game, and no iehabi
tantstobe disturbed. After recruiting his party,
he proceeded onward, and, ea the 3d of harek,
encamped within fifty miles of Monterey, where,
to his surprise, he receive/La peremptory. order
irons Castro to leave the country at dom..- At
Brat be took no notice of this order, as he bad
given no occasion for any hostile demonstration;
but when he heard that Gen. Castro was really
in pursuit of him, ho fortified his party with
logo of woods, upon A LSghhW, and hoisted the
United States flag; and there, in, a quietly brave
attitude, virtually defied the Californians to do,
their worst. From his damp he emild see with
his spy-glass that an attack war in preparation;
end he also received from Mr. Larkin a- letter
telling him of Castro's ordain to drive, him ham
the country. The messenger who carried back
Frames answer to Larkin, (which was that
he and Me party should defend Gametes to the
last man) added, fiom his own suggestion, that
"two thoqsand MIA ROOM nob be alio to drive
Captain Fremont from his position." A similar
impression seems to have taken possession . of,
'Castro himself, turbo did not venture to attack
him; and after three days waiting, Captain Frei;
meat left his little fort, and proceeded on his
exploring expedition to Oregon. Castro fol
lowed after, and evidently cal not dare to come
up with him; and having picked up a few cast
away things left in the deserted log-fort, he re
turned to California, tasking a proclamation, full
of falsehoods, declaring that he had driven away
to Oregon this band of highway robbers!
in the folloWing May, when Captkin Fremont
was encamped.= the Greater Tiameth lake, he
was surprise/at the arrival of twamountal men,
who told him that Lieutenant Gillespie, with
letters for him, wan tome miles behind, beset by,
hostile Indian. Captain Fremont immediately
broke up his camp and went back to hls assist
ance, and met him after day or two.. Lieut.
Gillespie delivered him ai letter of simple intro
duction from Mr. Buchanan, Searetarywf State,'
and family letters franc Col. Benton. Under all'
these circumstances, lie could not bet under
stead that Lieut. Gillespie was accredited by Mr.
Beetuusin ap agent of the goverensient, and
this thegantlemen- hinsselt affirms], infermiug
Captain Fremoat that the gonrametit wished
him to return to California, and acquaint himself
with the disposition et the lababitante, and the
designs of the British upon the count* and, if
they were of a certain kind, to counteract them.
Oa hie return to California, which was lmme-•

the greatest excitement, for all the American
emitters bad been ordered eat of the country, and
wereareatened with massacre and the destruc
tion of their crape: The arrival of Captain Fre

themselves; they expected -every moment to be
attached by the Indians, who bad been exalted
against them; and they besought lira to take
the direction of the detente. The danger-of the
American settlers was imminent, arid their ene
my was also Lissome. But ho did not know that
the Mexican war was begun. It was impossible
for him to communicate with the authorities at
home; yet unauthoilied, he could not commit the
United States government, by commeacung hos
tilities in ion name. Bat his heart bled for his
distreseed 'countrymen, and he made up his
