Juncos hPLEsx.—Speaking of Judge M'Lesa
as an acceptable candidate ,for the Presidency,
the National Bra, Bays
"Judge McLean has a history and nn estab
lished position. Once a Democrat, Postmaster
General under General Jackson's Administration,
he was transferred (because rather imprnetbia
ble, Ilya recollect aright, in partisan matters)
to a seat on the Supreme Bench, which he has
held ever since. He is a pure man, of inflexible
integrity, earnestly, religious, a high-toned con
servative. His settled opinions on the subject
of Slavery are well known, haling been an
! noanced from the Bench, pri nted in the newspa-
I pars, openly expressed in conversation. We
sem them up as follows:
Slavery ID against natural right, and therefore
every provision in relation to it in the Constitn
don must be construed strictly. It can exist
only by positive enactment, which has no force
beyond the jurisdiction of the enacting power.
Slaves entering a free State, by the action or
consent of their masters, become free. The
Federal Constitution always regards slaves as
persona, not as property. The Mexican laws
abolishing Slavery, continued in force in the
Territories we acquired from Mexico, after their
acqmsit on. The Constitution confers upon
Cengeess no power to create or establish Slavery.
Coupon under its police power may prohibit
Slavery In the Territories of the United States.
These are his doctrines, and we may add that
he sternly disapproved of the repeal of the Min
60111i COL14111)M130, and, like the other gentlemen
named, condemns as sternly the outrages 'since
perpetrated in Kansas by the Propaganda, under
color of Federal authority."
Judge M'Lean has rapidly gained ground of
late. In this region be is very popular, and
would make a candidate entirely acceptable.

BD11011:—My attention has been drawn
to the name of Porter R. Sawyer who appeared
as one of the chosen orators at the late Demo
cratic ratification meetings. Being evidently •
new star in the galaxy of Democratic) luminaries,
It. to natural, end doubtless proper (before we

May we not trace backward Its course, and learn

In defiance of the laws of nature, it comer' like
some wandering comet, shedding a light as little
desired aa beneficent.
Being somewhat acquainted with the anew!,
dents of this "applauded orator," it may not be
amiss to give you a brief eketoh thereof. I re
member him a young man in this city, member
Of the M. E. Church, fail of loquacity and seal,
especially upon the great question of human
rights, and denouncing the awful turpitude of
American Slavery, and believing there was •
wider field for the action of hie benevolence and
intellect he applied to the authorities of the
church for license to preach the Gospel. But
they, deeming him a little In advance of proprie
ty on the anhject of abolitionism, which at that
time was confined principally to New England,
and advocated by Garrison, Abby Kelly, and
their followers, thought it proper to withhold a
license until his seal on this aubject etionid be
tempered with knowledge. Bat the light he
possessed wss trot thus to be "hid under •
bushel." He took • his flight to the more con
genial soil of New England, where he was au
thorised under the garb of the ministry to en
lighten the people. For several years he held
this position in the Methodist Episcopal church.
But the teachings of the "Garrison School" dis
covered to him that the Methodist Church was
pro-slavery, and although remotely, was never
theless, connected in some way with this "sum
of all villiany." This being more thimble tender
conscience could bear, he withdrew from her
communion and united himself with an Abolition
Church, and was for • time 'stationed in this city
in one of their churches on Wylie street, and
when Franklin Pierce was a candidate for the
Presidency, friend Sawyer was found tattling
valiantly for Free 8611 principles.
Now, air, what is the cause or causes, of this
sudden sometime on the subjeot of Slavery. Has
the "peculiar institution" improved morally, po
litically or 806'4, within the past four years;
or, has the measures of the present Administra
tion (which Mr. Buchanan endorses by accept
ing the Cincinnati platform,) exhibited Slavery
in a less odious or objectionable aspect than
heretofore t Is there in the whole structure a
1 single plank remedial of the evil, that like a
dertruotive tornado, is sweeping over the land
uprooting in its mad career the very foundations
of civil and religious liberty? •
I would not have you infer that I think the
present position of Mr. Sawyer of any moment
to the cause of freedom. But, as an early ac
quaintance, and one who felt some interest In
his future, I cannot bat feel surprised that the
"hideous monster" whose rapid growth and sr
ratio presumption has at length aroused the
great mind of, this slumbering nation to the
perils its demands forbade, should receive one
- single convert, however afoul the scoeselon to
its strength. EBQMMEIL.

LUMMOX, Monday, June 4.
Enivots or CHICAGO Tantran:—Clail war is
raging In this Territory. Three engagements
have been fought between the People and the
Invaders of KIIIIBI3. Twenty.one men have
been hilted.
The first engagement came off on Thursday
night. A company of seventy men—Missouri
ans, South Carolinians and Alabamians—after
scouring round the country all day—diving off
and plundering the Northern emigrants, were
surprised and attacked by a party of Free
State boys, commanded by a young printer,
formerly .from lowa, who fired upon them ae
they were pßaittg a wood, and killed six, and
mortally wounded one of them. As soon as
their companions fell, the invaders fled in great
disorder. Only one volley was fired.
The Free State company numbered twenty-one
men. They took some prisoners, two wagon
loads of provisions, ammunition and arms, two
or three horees, and four splendid mules. They
liberated the prisoners, after disarming them.
No Free State man was killed or wounded.
The scene of this exploit Is the Neosho Val.
ley. it is rumored that the same company on
the following day attacked another party of inva
ders in the same vicinity; and, after several •
rounds between them, killed fonr bllssourian4
without any loss on the part of the tree State
men.
No detailed acme= of this fight has yet been
retailed.
News has just reached no that a pitched bat
tle on the prairie will come off to-day et Hickory
Point, In a skirmish last night, four of the in
vaders were killed, and one of the spuatteia
dangerously wounded.
The invaders numbered one hundred and
twenty men. Fifty-two of our boys are keeping
them at bay until they are reinforced. A °our
ler hie just arrived in Lawrence with a call for
fifty men. I will accompany them, and give you
a deecription of the battle, if I return, and our
party are victorious.
A guerilla party attacked Mr. Walker's housel
and one who was wounded has since expired.
Guerilla parties are mining the country in
all directions, plundering, driving off the North;
eru emigrants, killing their cattle and burning
down their houses.
The Northern men have resolved to retaliate.
An armed erompany called the Northern Retalia
tors, hie been mantled in LiIIITOIICO, and will
start in a day or two; and corer disband until
every Bliesonrian, who is not an actual ender,
and every member of Buford'e organized gangs
of highway robbers are driven into Missouri or
out of this State.
The United States troops have orders from
Gov. Shannon to disband the guerilla parties,
but as the robbers can easily keep oat of the
way, their toovemente can afford no protection
to the Northern settlers.
