" The Church and Slavery."
MB. Entroz:--Your correspondent, "A Plain
Man," in Tuesday morning's paper, introduce'
the above subject in a manner perhaps requiring
some notice. This stillest, at all times impor
tant, jast now assumes a character never before
attaching to it. Your oorrespondent'e complaint
is two fold; as directed against the Pulpit and
the religious Pate. Touching the relation of
1 the subject to the Press,l bare nothing to say;
let it speak for Itself: if It eau jnetify Itself, let
It do so. Of the matter as it Involves the Pulpit,
of course your correspondent's opportunities of
knowing whether pulpits generally are or ate
not doing their duty In the premises, are too'
limited to enable kim to judge: that tome,
_pro-
bably too many, are delinquent, we are ready to
admit; but to our certain knowledge, oil are
rot so
Bat why are so many found to be unwilling to
speak out freely and earnestly on a enbjeot of
the moment now evidently belonging to this ques- I
don? I mutt usame that it is not because they
are indiffrent to the evils, the crimes, the
reps beine our dearest and
beet rights. If they ahead aot from indifference
It would indeed justly expose them to all the
maledictions of God's holy word, and to the con
tempt of all honest men. But may there not be
other !colons which, for the time being, may
constrain them to refrain from the public expree
eisa of their indignation and abhorrence of the
tyrannical and bloody deeds now being perpe
trated bylthe minions of slavery?
One reason of this siienee undoubtedly is al
luded to by your correspondent, where he oaye
that "be ' , would not have clergymen sesame the
work of partizan politicians. Unfortunately
for oar taking a public part In this question,
party polities do now range themselvesan direct
antagonism on this' great question. l'his is as
rune, and the only issue, before the people. Oa
the polities! arena the embattling hosts are mas
tering for the conflict; a conflict heretofore un
paralleled in the history of thiscountry, for the
energy and ability with which It is to he con
ducted. Bot however much we may sympathise
with the right and against the wrong, a prudent
clergyman may out embroil himself with the
controversy so as to alienate those members of
his parish, who may not see as ho does In all
thloge relating to the subject.
Another reason is doubtless found is the feat,
that our churches, like our Federal ooarte, sus
tain a common relation to the north and the
south: and our church polity, like oar national
laws, have beau framed oa the principle of equal
rights and free communion between these differ
ent sections. Bat slavery, being a creators of
positive law, could not exist without the aid of
express enactments: whiley, being a eat
ural, Inherent right of man, required no positive
law for its othibtlehment. °tit the repeal of

This, if we be not greatly mistaken, will al-
timately be found only half doing the work. It'
is like turning aside from the course of the tells

Lary. But the mass of the people are evidently
Dot yet prepared for ao bold a step as the toted I
and Immediate eradication of this monster evil
from our hind and government. It will require
an entire and thorough revolution In the public
sentiment and the public conscience. That rev- I
elution is being rapidly, yea magically effected ;
end when *nee it Is folly completed, It will sweep
slavery from the church and from "this fair land
we so fondly call cue own ," with such a mood
tornado as the world has never witnessed. It is
owing to their situation, and the felt obligations
of their church ?Wit', that the MIAs of minister
of the gospel will be found among the slower
portions of the community to embrace tide rove
liztionary rentluteat In its fullest extent.
Ball another prominent reason of the present
apparent dereliction of duty on the part - et Cler
gymen, Is found in the lamentable fact that ger
min portions of the great anti slavery movements
of the day, have been *annealed' with evils of a
most outrageous diameter. Profanity, blasphe
my, bildelity, egregious Impiety have all, at dif
ferent times and eeiff pleelkin.slitesated In
the garb of opposition to alavery. And we are
all too ready to conclude that it must be a bad
saws, which Invokes the aid of such allies.—
These are execrable things ; but who has for
gotten, that in the name of the religion of the
Blessed Redeemer the wickedest things on earth
have been perpetrated? Is religion responsible
for these crimes become perpetrated in Its
name? We answer no! neither should the op-
poeltion to slavery be lila responsible for the;
crime* of those who al themselves therewith.'
Antislavery, in acme o its etwardems, his si

isters ; hence too =of clergymen 'tend aloof
from the present =Pct. In time we hope this
evil, on both , aides, will be remedied.
There remains- yet another reason: and we

In the fact that the mama approved fstopeeto.

BLOILIT 3111011/37.—i correspondent of the
London Times writing from Turin; gays, and no
doubt, correctly, that, in all countries of Europe
where a rigid censorship of the prime is main
tained, the most hijarions glanders un the gov
ernment are disseminated by means of secret
printing. This he states was folly proved to be
the cue even in France, in the developments of
the Marianne conspiracy. He adds that In Cen
tral Italy there are at this time numerous print
ing presses constantly at work, whish furnish
the readers of the papers Issuing from them
with matter so dangerous that even in free
Piedmont no paper would dare to publish th—
in Piedmont, England, Belgium and Switzerland
thereinto no eeoert presses, because there is no
demand for them, and yet the newspapers there
are infinitely raperior In the moderation of their
tone to the surreptition.sPapera sanded to. This
suggests to the' Times' correepondent the con
sideration that if despotic governments chaise
to rid themselves of these secret glanders they
have only to relax the severity or their Denser
ship. There is sound sense in this, but tyranny
Is ever 4.30 blind to appreciate it.

ped to Australia. Most of them have been for
seven years confined In the Papal prisons, with
out having been tried far say offence, and In
many cases not even knowing the crimes with
which they are charged. 'Rained In prospects,
broken in mind and body, the alternative Is now
offered them of perpetual Imprisonment or per
petual exile. Every night some ten or twelve
of-these prisoners are banded across the frontier
near Pisani& by the Papal police to the Tete=
poi d'armes, to be conveyed to Leghorn. This
seems to be a sort of underhand way of yielding
to the demands of the Peace Conferences for the
celeste of political prisoner; and as England
was foremost in the policy, the prisoners are
sent to her colony_ This is to prepare for the
emergonoy of a forced amnesty by s preliminary

A Bouna.—Gcletsvas Koerner, who was the
Democratic' Lieutenant Governor of Illinois in
toe year MS, has come oat strongly against
tho extension of slavery, and the Democratic'
party, as being in Re favor. Ile is described as
a man of great infinenoe with the German popu
lation of the State. Illinois, hitherto the most
devoted of all the Western dtstes to the Del:oa
f:ratio party, moms to base a number of its lead
ing Democrats very much discontented with the
present position of things. With the aid of such
men as Trumbull, Bissell, and &truer, It will
be strange indeed if the opposition does not
`triumph there.

are .preparing for the same trip.
