/annotate Simard. Synod.
BMX DAY-TIMDAY.
Synod us opened erlth prayer by the Mode-
rater.
The roll was called and the totes miiead
The minutes. -were eorrected n that
Messrs. lapse Themeon and Isaac SPGeo were
elected members of the Board of foreign MM
.
done for coo year.
On motion the regular order of business was
suspended, and the unfinished business of Mon
day was taken up.
Tatrefore the '. motion of Mr. Anderson to
adopt the Testimony as a basis of union, and
transmit it to the Associate Reformed Synod for
their approval, came before Synod. .
Dr. Beveridge 'introduced an amendment - to
the article on communion by adding to the de
elarationthe following : "Nor should communion
.any Ordinances .of worship be held under such
oternmstances as would beincondstent with the
keeping of them ordinances pure and entire, or
so as to give actintenance to any :oorruption of
the doctrines and trathatione of.Chriat."
Dr. Rodgers 'ciliated, unless the amendment
be Inserted in the illustration, and
not in the
declaration.
Mr. Cummings was opposed - to our ministers
and members mingling in religious meeting's
ethere hymns of human composure were sting to'
the exolasion of psalms, and he therefore appro
ved the amendment as, prohibiting it. Ile ap
pealed to the members,—had they 111.31.6 lore for
strangers than for theirold members who oppo
sedal the b iv, though • minority I - Let the ba
sis be so a ended as to. enure the unanimous
support, of the church. -
Mr. B. indmatt favored the amendment, and
in the course of his remarks, said that for the
put 'eleven. years the church hadbeen declining.
If these strides be made, a number would have
, to be left in the rear, who would tack God's
. troth to their banner, and go by themselves.
. Mr. J. Hindman approved of the remarks
made. No one who _ observes the signs of the
times .
but knew that union could be formed only
by liberal provisiolle on which every man could
put his own construction. One wishes to go to
the theatre, and therefore thire mast be no arti
cle against It; another wishes to tipple, and there
must be no rale in the Testimony against it.
Dr. Cooper thought that the amendment of '
Dr. Beveridge was not worth macho the friends
of the old rule on odattonal . hearing in all its
staidness. .
Mr. Snodgrass thought the amendmentneces
sary. Ile had known a case where a Methodist
clergyman was calledupon to make the doting
'
„. prayer, and ho also know a young minister who
sung a hymn. This amendment prohibited corn
=intuition with those against whom they testi
fied.
Dr. Wilson cattail for the name of the minister
who mega hymn,- bat was ruled out of order.
The amendment was adopted.
On motion of Mr. Hindman the motion
. before the Synod was Suspended to obtain an
expression of opinion upon a motion to add an
article to the basis embodying the article in the
old Teatimony-on the subject of "Separation
from C•orropt Churches."
Prof. Vincent moved as an amendment that
the article be on the duty of the Separation
from Corrupt Churches, "and on Schisms."
The amendment of Prof V. was lost.
Tho motion of Mr. Hindman was lost.
Mr. Hindman protested against the vote of
the Synod, for reasons hereafter to be laid be
fore Synod.
A multitude of motions, Ac., were made and
lost, and any number . of speeches were made,
embodying the same views as before published.
A number of motions to adopt, varied in al
most every form, were mode; bat, although a
majority of the Synod were in favor of the
basis, and ready to vote, the superior tactics
of the minority prevailed, and all the motions
were referred to Revs. Messrs. Brown and
Smith and Dr. Beveridge, a Special Committee
to report • resolution on the adoption of the
bads. _ ..
- Adjourned with prayer.
• AITEWOON 111.3310 N.
Opened with prayer by the Moderator, who, in !,
the course of it, alluded in appropriate terms to '
the lateectnet pf violence in Kansas.
The minutes were read and approved.,
The Memorial and Complaint et Rev. Mr.
Strang against the Presbytery of Allegheny.—
Laid on the table for the present.
Petition by- Henry Blair from the Presbytery
of Shenango, for redress of grievance. Referred
to committee on appeals.
The committee on appeals reported on the me
morial of the Shippen street (Pailadelphis),
cengregatiOn, with a resolution. The report was
adopted.
The Committee on Missions reported favora
ble on the proposal of the Alleeheny congrega-
Um', relative to the edocation of heathen chil
dren. The committee recommend the scholar
ship system, the cost for each child to be SiSper
swum for seven years. The ministers of the
church were recommended to lay the matter be
fore their congregations.
The report was adopted.
The Committee on Privileges reported on the
right of Individuals to mats in Synod. In the
ease of Bev. D. Bullion', of the 2d Presbytery
of Cambridge; the Committee reported that he
acceded to the Synod since the anion in
1864, and that he have opportunity to declare
Ids' accession to the Synod, and belief In the
__principles' of the Church. The report was
adopted.
Mr. D. Bullion! thereupon took the Boor, and
gave a statement of the difficulties which have
had an existence of twenty-seven year!, and
concluded with cordially giving in his adherence
to the faith, principles, doctrines and govern
' meet of the Associate Church. In regard to
Psalniody he believed that all the songs in the
Bible and New Testament should be need in
Divine Service. In regard to communion, he
believed in admitting communicants of other
churches who held the same cardinal views.
A resolution was offered setting forth that the
statement of Mr. D. Ballions,' is fall and saris
tummy.
The vote resulted as follows, 67 for and 58
against Carried.
Mr. Pollock, not having voted at all, moved
for a reconsideration.
A great camber of members protested against
the views of Dr. Bunions.
air. French charged Dr. Beveridge with teach
ing the doctrines on psalmody expressed by Dr.
Banjoes.
Considerable excitement was manifested, and
Dr. Beveridge immediately explained his post-
tion._ His position was that the psalms were to
be used in worship cf God and they only; he
could not freely use any other. The Testimony
condemns all human composure, and by so do
ing, condoms paraphrases, which though con
taining much scripture, has much human com
posure, bat does not condemn translations of
other portions* of the Bible. And he had said
. that if a member applied to be admitted to the
church, saying that he would use translations'if
he had them, (he the speaker) would not exclude
him.
The motion endorsing Mr. Burnous was laid
on the table.
Mr. Link charged Mr. Bullions with having
used hymns of human composition while officio.
ting in other eharches.
Deep feeling was manifested at this point, sev
eral gentlemen asserting that 11 Mr. 13.'e views
were endorsed by Synod there would be • di.
vision in the church.
A great many motions on the eubjoct were
made, but they were all referred again to the
Committee.
The Basis of Union was again taken up, and
the Committee appointed at noon reported.
The first resolution approved of the testimony
as amended as a basis of union.
The second, that It be transmitted to the A. It.
Synod, end if it meet their approval, to send it
in overture to the embus and Presbyteries to.
report thereon at the nest meeting of Synod.
The third provides fo the Committee t
ot trans.
mit the Testimony togr with .the aion of
this Synod, to the.d. H. Synod.
The resolutions were adopted separately, and
the roll ems called on the adoption of the
whole.
The vote stood, for the resolutions, 1110-70
Ministers and 40 Eldir — s.
Against, 19-14 Ministers and 5 Elders.
Those not &sweet were by motion allowed to
record their romp at another time.
Dr. Cooper, Dr. Beveridge and Mr. McLean,
were appointed the Committee.
Oa motion adjourned.
