The mat ter would have been consummated yesterday, but that the Committee of - Councils desired to obtain the full approval of those bodies. It will undoubtedly be ratified by the stockhold ers to-day. Considering all the circumstances of the cue, it appears to us that this lease is a favorable ono to this city and county, and much better than the project of endorsing the - the bonds. We do not think a better bargain could have been secured for the city and county, and we hope it may prove to • be a good one for the lessees. Burtmonnx OF Itstmtoans.—The distance be• tween Kittanning and Indiana is twenty-nix wales, over an old "clay pike," in tolerable order though quite "hilly;" yet rather than travel these twenty-six miles in the old way, some per eonsprefer to take the route by way of this city: first by the Allegheny Volley Railroad to Pitts burgh, forty-four miles, then by the Pennsylva nia Central to Blairsville, about fifty miles; and then by the- branch road to Indiana, (just fin ished) sixteen miles, making in all about 110 miles. Every spring and fall great numbers cf lum bermen return from this city to the head branches of the Allegheny (Olean and the surrounding region) byway of Cleveland; thence via the Lake Shore Road to Dunkirk, and ("berme by the N. Y, and Erie Road, eighty miles, to Olean; in all not leas than 875 miles. By the line of the Al• legheray Valley Road, Olean Is only 175 miles from this city. DZHOCiLLTIO Cosoazeanan VOTE TIIAT SLAVE ROLM= MAT KILL CATEOLIO 111.13IIIME.—Flev enty-nine "Democrats" and "Hindoos" voted on the 14th of May in the House of Represenm title, against inquiring into the facts of the kill ing of the poor Irishman Keating In Willard's Hotel, by the Alabama-born Congressman Her bert. Seventy good Representatives and erne,. voted for this investigation. Of these, sixty nine were Republicans. They believed in the civil equality between Irish serving men, and Members of Congress, and they wished t, have the Representative who would murder an Irish man, made amenable to civil law and to Parlia mentary discipline. To institute the punishment which this great crime called for, a Republican moved an investigation into its facts and cir cumstances. The Slave-holders and "Hindoce" in the Home instantly rallied to Herbert's pro tection. They toted down the resolution of in quiry, and by their vote declared that a Member of Congress, if Southern-born and of the Demo crats Party, might cominit murder with impu nity—provided his victim was an hishman and a Catholic. In honorable contrast with this most disgrace• tel vote, Will the conduct of the Republio•u ftep . resentatives ever appear on the record. Re spectful of the rights of all men, they would have held to stem accountability the member of their own Body, who endued himself with a cruel crime ups g the 'person of an humble Irish waiter.—Aaa4•Eve. The War in Kansas The following are the latesrletters of the spe. dal correspondent of the New York Tribune.— Rl'Walt has been compelled to flee for bin life. Gov. Robinson brought away with him the testi mony of the commission, as far as taken, which he confided to Ms wife when he was arrested at Lexington, and she proceeded with it to Wash ington. But for this she would hare remained with her husband. Civil war in evidently at hand. The Southern emigrants are enrolled as militia, and are paid by the United States, ladle the Free state men have to fight at their own ex_ pense, and be Indicted for treason besides: LAVEMICII, Friday, May 0,185 G. To-day the examination rooms of the Com mittee have been more dull than usual. The testimony was Important enough, but only two membere of the Commission (Messrs. Howard and Sherman) were present, and the spice which the presence of Gov. Reeder and Gen. Whitfield throws into the cross examination was also wanting. This morning Mr. Oliver went up to Lecompton; of course, he kept the ex act object of Me mission to himself, but it was rumored that it was to eee Judge Lecompte, and to dissuade that worthy from the court° he seemed bent on pursuing. Intelligence I have had from that quarter today rather confirms the rumor, but leaves no ground to expect Ithat pacific, measures will be preferred. The fact is, Judge Lecompto is not's leader among the Pro• Slavery party, and it is in vain to look to one Of the tools for action according to any conviction. . . . LAwasaes. Saturday, May 10, 1856. Yesterday Goy. Reeder was Invisible all day, and to-day it is rumored that he has gone or is going East at the urgent request of friends of .peace, who do not wish hostilities precipitated. Reeder having taken the position that he would not allow these petty writs to be served on him, the matter is brought to a direct issue, and as the people here would have stood to him and de fended him If necessary, hostilitieswere at least probable. Under these circumstances, and not from any personal fear, it is raid that Gov. Ree der has consented to leave. How they will get so without him in examining the evidence for hi■ contested seat I donot know. It would certainly look very hard that a member of the Com mission should have to flee from it, whether the motive be personal safety or the public peace. It is certain that the life of Reeder would be in danger either in Lecompton or Leavenworth, el though I believe he would be willing to encoun ter the danger if it were merely a personal mat ter. I would not say that either Mr. Howard or Sherman wished Gov. Reeder to go. 1 be lieve they feel competent to sustain the dignity or safety of the Commission, and would et least stand the chances, but they are most anxious to prottecote the investigation fully and peaceably, and 1 602 pretty sure that tear wishes and those of Mr. Oliver are that Reeder should leave rath er than be the cause of disturbance. This is the first time that the Commission has mat opposi tion' and hinderunce in the performance of their duty ; but, mark toy words, it will not bo the last. I know the Pro-Slacery men in this Tor- Yesterday morning Goy Robinson left this place for the Boat. He has , business of coneid erabla moment to attend to, and will be here IA • fore the assemblage of the Legislature in Jut); in fact 1 do not expect him to bo gone for vu f length of time. He was very reluctant to go, as the disturbance appeared to be coming up again. I can testify to the sentiment, for stood beside him when he looked toward Law rence from the bill where his house stand., with an expression of the deepest anxiety MA regret. It is said that he took a portion of-the testimony that has been already obtained to a sealed packet to Washington, but Ido not vouch for this. A plot is on foot among the Border Ruffians to seize the testimony miteu and never allow it to leave the Territory. Yesterday companies of armed men were going upon the road from Westport, Mo., to Lecomp ton, all day. A good deal of uneasiness ens felt relative to their movements. I think they are mostly of the Buford, and other Southern partiee; and from what I can learn, they are being taken up to Lecompton to be organized as — militia, and take them into the United States pay as suoh. They have been loitering and camp ing along the Missouri frontier, as if waiting some demand for their tiervictes. They have boon sustained mostly, if not taltogether, by thu people of Missouri. This is rather onorotta, arid I would not be eurpneed if the prevent difficulties were got up, partly at least, to afford some excnno fcr organizing a militia form, sad transferring the borthen to the shoulders of Uncle Sam. By this mews, these men; who do not seem to be inclined to nettle peaceably, can be kept in readiness for the work they name to do. Gov. Shannon, as I predicted last Fall, boo given all the United States arms sent out for the nee of the Territory to lb. wavy are ostensibly given to the militia of Kan sas, of which the Kickapoo Rsogers form tbr chief part, but this is a more dodge to suppl, the Border Ruffians with arms against the pee. ple of the Territory. Lawrence has suffered very much from Hto war, and has been so impoverish by it and stn consequences, that improvements are not put.t, ed so rapidly as 1 would like to see. However, a good many buildings are going up. Tnz RZPUBLICANS of this County will do w.. 11 to recollect the primary meetings to take piece on Saturday of next week, to elect delegates v County Convention, to meet on the Wednesday following; to elect Delegates to the National cud State Conventions. A great work is before en. We should address ourselves to it with bietrtl nese and zeal. We would suggest to all nor friends when they come together in their elec tion distriots, to organize themselves into clubs, and appoint a President and Secretary, pirjArft tory to the business of the campaign. • AntILITOGI INALIZBABLIIRICIIITIL—The Cincin nati 0.711 c, of Monday, states that more than a dosen fogitive slaves passel through UAL place the precious seek, on their way to Canada.— The underground Railroad is doing a large brisi ans. His mechanical skill soon secured him the finest and moat Important parts of the work, and he rose gradually from that to stand at the heed of thq greatest establishment on this con tinent. The manufactory now under the man agement of his eons was projected and nearly completed under his own superintendence, when his sodden death transferred the labors to his sons. They have jobly fulfilled the hopes of their father, in carrying out his plans, being able now to obey the finest establishment In this or any other country. It wan feared by many that the reputation built up by the father would not be sustained by the eons. The contrary is thecae... Their inatruments are more sought after than at any previous time, and they may before long be compelled to enlarge the new factory to met t the demand.
