Clayton said be had seen in thp' morning newspapers an extract purporting to be ; from a letter of the British bl'a'ster at Wash , legion, dated Marsh 31st, 1850, in which Mr. Crampton says: " "It will be within your Lordship's recollect': n that Mr. Clayton was informed by Sir Henry Bulwer, before the treaty of 1850 was signed, that linatan was de jure sod de judo a British possession, and Mr. Clayton has on various on. j (=Miss since, in conversation with me, stated that he considered Bataan as much a British pos session as Jamaica or any other British Westin die Island." • Mr. Clayton branded this statement as utterly nxtruo in every part. The British Minister must have labored under as strange a hallucina tion as over entered the bruin of any man, to rooks. euoh a deolaratiou. Nothing like it had ever escaped him in conversation with Mr. Crampton or any body else. Fortunately for . Ina the feet did not rest merely upon the otatc meats or Mr. Crampton and himeelr; ho had a living witness Fire!, he called • attention to a letter written by Mr. Crampton, end read in the Senate on the 12th of January, 1854, in the course of one of Mr. Clayton's speeches, in which he attempted to prove that Ruatan was not a dependency of Halite, and was not exempted from the provisions of the treaty of 1860. Ile then had Mr. Crampton's testimony on the sub ject, and read it to the Senate, and will now read it again to toutradlet Mr. Crampton'a statement which was made known to bite this morning for the first time, and of ythich he had not the most remote conception. In this letter Mr. Crampton said the dependencies of British Honduras aro in my opinion, distinctly enumerated In the treaty Or 1786. He hadmado this statement deliberately and the irresistible conclusions was that Ruatan was not Included in these dependencies.— Mr. Clayton said that while he was detained at his lodgings by siokness in February or March last, he was called upon by Mr. Crittenden, and while they were engaged in conversation OD this subject Mr. Crampton came in to invite Mr. Clayton to dine with him. Mr. Clayton was too sick to accept the invitation but he took occasion to ask Mr. Crampton if he knew any thing of the charge, that he, .Ir. Clayton, had ever admitted that Ruatan was exempted from the operation of the treaty, and Mr. Crampton In the moat unequivocal terms, acknowledged that there was no truth in the report that Mr. Clayton bad ever made any intimation to him. Mr. Crittenden 'corroborated Mr. Clayton's 'statement, be could not pretend to detail the the oonversation at whidh he was accidentally present, but !wording to hie recollection the sub stance or it was directly contrary to the state• merit in the newspapers and sustained the ac count Mr. Clayton had given of IL Mr. Clayton said he had made spew:lh after speech in the Senate endeavoring to prove the direct referee of what he was represented as ad mitting. lie was willing to pot the most charit able construction upon it, but it Wee ea utter mistake. Mr. Casa thought it very certain that Mr. Clayton, unless in some fit of Insanity, could never have mild to Mr. Crampton ain't wan at tributed to him. Mr. Pratt enquired what evidence - there RllB that this letter' was authentic. He thought that there must ho some mistake. Mr. Clayton had no knowledge as to its au thenticity. When hie attention was called to it this morning he was much astonished, and his fleet duty was to disprove the Statement. No matter by whom made, it was false. If Mr. Crampton never made such statement, he was not injured by these remarks, but if ho had made it, it was for Mr. Crampton to explain It had appeared in the public prints, end until it was denied or disavowed, Mr. Clayton was bound to suppose that it was a genuine data ment. Ile should, however, bo very happy . to be assured of the contrary. Mr. Fish, in response to a question of Me. Clayton, said that while he thought there was come mistake in the c o py of the letter, in the course of two interviean with Mr. Crampton, the latter elated to him that Mr. Clayton always denied that Mitten was a British possession. Mr. Cass said that Great Britain being repeat edly driven from one point of defence had inva riably taken refuge at another, as recent events showed. The Senate after debate refusal to reconsider the vote by which on Friday wan passed the lowa Land Bill. • The Senate then adjourned. Ilnuss.—Mr. Bennett. cf New York, from Cho Committee on Publics Lands, reported a bill granting a million scree of land to Florida to aid in the construction of three Itsilroade, embra. clog five hundred miler, end moved the previous question. It vas well known that if they were to be referred to the Committee of the Whole on the elate of tee Union, they could not be acted on this ?cation. In reply to an en quiry, Mr. Behriett said the Committee on Pub lic Lands intend reporting similar bills for Rail road, in hliehigan, Danielson, Missiesippi, Ala bama and Viweonem, requiring six million sores.
