TELE
Nnw Tons, April n—A dispatehfrom Provi
deare, Cape Cod, has been received to the fol
lowing effect :
A bottle drifted ashore hero to-day containing
a paper with the following words upon it:—"Off
Grand Banks, in the steamer Pacific; mast gone;
• steamer out of order; send assistanoe itotnedi
' ately. (Signed) Ass ELDRIDGE:"
The above is evidently a heartless hoax.
The gale of yesterday and last night did Gau
-1 elderable damage in this vicinity. Many trees
I were uprooted, buildings unroofed, and two or
I three Chnrch.spires demolished. One of the
I spires of the new Congregational Church In
Brooklyn, fell upon and store in the roof of the
Church, doing much damage. Tho Immense
Cress on St. James' Cathedral in James street,
Brooklyn, was also blown down, and considerable
lejary was done to the shipping in the docks.—
A schooner, the name of which is unknown, was
driven ashore on Throgs Nook.
The Aspinwall Mail Steamer George a w, did
not go ont, but anchored In North Riv L er. The
Sound steamers remained in their docks up to
midnight. Towards morning the wind lulled,
but it continued to rain at intervals.
Wamttoron erre, April 22.—The bill to alter
and amend the act establishing a Circuit Court
of tie United Staten in California was passed.
An anti-Nebraska caucus was held at the
Capitol to-night. Messrs. Pennington, Hale
and Harlan were appointed to nominate an Ex
ecutive Committee ; they reported the following
names, which were confirmed:—Messrs. Cella
mer and Wilson of the Senate and Mace and
Norton of the House. Mr. Galloway gave a
favorable accoant of the state of public feeling
in Ohio, from whore he recently returned.
Justice Nelson to-day delivered the opinion of
the Supreme Court on the case of the State of
Pennsylvania, against the Wheeling and Bel
mont Bridge and others, dissolving the injunc
tion granted by the Cirouit Judge, and overru
ling the motion for writs of asslstance and attaoh
meant and granting motions for the taxation!' on
the process therefor.

Wasunzarost CITY, April 21.
Secretary of War to trauma!' copies of all letters
not heretofore communicated, whioh were ad
dressed during the present year by Gov. Stevens
of Washington Territory, respecting the difficul
ties with the Indians, together with all oorre
spondence relative to hostilities in Washington
and Orogen Territories.
Mr. Toombs, from the Judiciary Committee
reported book a bill to amend the naturalization
lawn,. with recommendation that it do not pees.
On motion, Mr. Adams' bill was made the spe
cial order for May 12.
The bounty land bill was dieoussed for a short
time and then laid aside.
Mr. Clay replied to speeches of Messrs. Se
ward, Sumner Wileon, and Harlan on the bill
for the admission of Kansas. Ho complemented
the Executive for his course regarding Kansas
matters, and for tha firmues and consistency he
had exhibited in mdintaining the right/ of the
entire country.
The position ho said had been abused by Abo
litionists and Southern Americans on exactly
opposite grounds. He bad opposed the ex
tremes of both parties by occupying middle
ground, and pursuing a course consistent with
the rights of North and South. As to alleged
aggression of , the slave power, he Mild so far
from there being any truth in the charges, the
South bad ever since the foundation of the gov
ernment been gradually yielding to the encroach
ments and usurpations of the North. He would
at some future time vindicate Northern and
Southern Democrats from the chorge of enter
taining enmity against the North or South.
Senate adjourned.
11017611.—Upon assembling, the House immdi
ately proceeded to rote on theaction of the Com
mittee of the Whole on the Senate's amendments
to the Appropriation Bill. Amendment to ap•
propriate $300,000 for continuing the work on
the Washington ecqueduet, wan rejected by 27
majority.
The amendments were not all disposed of when
the Hansa adjourned.
!ism Yotuc, April 21.—The storm which com
menced here Saturday night, has increased and
ie now blowing with great fury from the North
east, with heavy rains et Intervale.
The N. Y. Tribune's Washington correspond
ent says that the Government has received no
dispatches from Mr. Dallas by the last steamer,
in regard to the difficulties between the two
countries; nor any notice from Mr. Crampton
that he had received the answer to Mr. Macy's
demand, which has been so long promised. At
latest accounts, Mr. Dallas bad not been pre.
seated to the Queen, probably owing to her ab
sence at Windsor, but he had been formally rev - ,
cognized by Lord Palmerston, and was transact
ing 'business at the Foreign office.
The rumor from here of the contests of Min
liter Wheeler's despatches are entirely fabrica
ted. Not a line has come front hint ooncerniog
the recent hostilities.
The reported challenge of Bacillar Douglas by
Col. Lane has very little foundation. No chal
lenge has been given, and no aorrespondence be
tween them exist, except a note from Col. Lime
addressed to Douglas to relieve Col. Lane from
imputations whirl were implied in that Senator's
comments on the Kansas Memorial. To that
note, it is expected a satisfactory reply wil I be
made.
