pidity. Under itsgenial totiaenoe; the buds of
tress long dormant are giving signs of vigor.
Many peach trees supposed to be killed by the
'..lcirmanifeat unmistakable signs - of vitality.
The fruit bads are generally if not universally
killed to this region, bat the trees we think will
generally escape. A .few days 1611 decide the
point. The buds on the Pears are swelling,
and the outer bark looks well, although the in
ner bark and the wood, particularly of last
year's growth, are discolored, erpeoially the
pith. They will undoubtedly leaf out, but wheth
er they will recover from the effects of the cold
Is doubtful. It is generally believed they will
die daring the summer. The Cherries, even the
Auer sorts, are putting out 'well, although the
wood and bark issomewhat discolored, and it
was supposed by many that they were ruined.
They • look now as if they would survive.
Apples, Gooseberries, Currants, and hardy Rasp
berries, are uninjured.. On our •own Peach
trees, the buds aro falling off, being displaced
by a new bud pushing out at the root of the one
destroyed.
The Peoria, (Illinois,) Republican, states that
althe loirest ealoulatien, one-thira, and mnny

Of the . country have been killed by the severe
cold of the past winter. Many of the most valu
able varieties of the apple tree have been ruined,
Including some that were previously supposed to
be particularly hardy. Peach-trees are very
generally killed, and other fruit suffer immensely.
We trait that the result will not be so bai as was
anticipated.
We have heard of no disasters to the North of
us, and in the Eastern States. In Western New
. York the prospect of a Peach crop is unusually
die. In New Jersey, the Newark Mercury says,
the. prospeote of a large yield, In all the Peach
grOwing districts, was never better. Notwith
standing the severe winter and backward Spring,
thebude are said to be generally uninjured, and
the lingering cold weather will prevent them
from swelling prematurely. In New England,
they look for a large crop of Pears, and of all
other fruits grown in that region.
The.extreme cold weather was confined to the
Westerriltates, of which Louisville wee about
the centre. The disasters in the West and
South-west are very great. Mr. Lougworth
gin; notice that the buds of Catawba grape are
killed, and no cuttings can be furnished tide
year. Maoy of the grape vines in thhivicinity
are frozen to the ground.

—Our readers are aware, from the letters pub
lished in our columns, !hat Dr. Rosser Hostas
Itreitetuilvely engaged in the treatment of con
sumption, by Inhalation, in New York. The re•
suits of. thiitoode of treatment upon the Bills
of Mortality have been looked for with much In.
tenet. If consumption Is curable by Inhale-
Mod, then iiirtnortality from this cause ought to
decrease at the point where the remedy is most
extensively employed, under the supervision of
the able and experienced Physician who has
brought the mode of treatment iuto especial no
tio4s, and has defended it so ably with his pen.
.Has this been the case I Facts show that it
has. The following article, which wy cut from
the New York Jaurrial of Commerce, will be read
with interest by all who wish to eee this terrible
scourge of our race brought under the power of
medical treatment :
TILIATMENT or CO/817MPT10111.—The Medical
Specialist calls attention to the decrease in the
mortality from consumption during the last six
months, compared with the corresponding period
in previous years, and ascribes the change to
the improved treatment by inhalation. The
diminution in the mortality from consumption
during the last three months of the year 1856,
was twenty-five per cent. less than daring the
last quarter of 1858 and 1864; and during the
quarter just ended, the diminution in the num
ber of deaths from consumption exceeded by
thirtyone per cent. the mortality of the same
months in 1865. The Specialist remarks:
"TM, general resort to inhalation could not
be unproductive of regatta. If our treatment
had been unsuccessful, it most hare increased
the mortality. If successful, it could not but
diminish it In proportion to that suocese. None
who are at all acquainted with the magnitude of
oar practice will deny that it baa been, during
the past two years, sufficient to exert the most
decided influence on the bills of mortality, not
only of this city, but also of the cities of Phil
adelphia, Baltimore and Boston. That that in
finance him been. exerted in the marked decrease
in the number of deaths, is an inference from
the facts, not ,only legitimate, but, we think,
unavoidable; and 'we claim it not on any per
sonal grounds, but as the natural result of adopt
tug•a more direct, simple, and common-sense
treatment. More than a year ago we stated in
one of our published letters, that ..1,/ every sass
of consumption se this city ever* placid uoder jo.
diciest trealtorot by irdalafiors, todlon two years
the mortality from this disease ieltu/d be diminished
ono Ulf." This prediction is cow oomiog to
pase."--Josr. of Colsource, April I.
&ars Aosioutsruaa hots.—The letter be
low sufficiently, explains Itself. Ws give it be
mote it brings the whole question directly be
tore the people. Undoubtedly the State Fair is
a benefit to our manufacturers and business men
generally, if they use it right. It Is also pro-
motive of a great interest in which all are deeply
concerned. If our citisma agree to raise two
thousand dollars the State Fair will beheld here.
This is the question presented in the letter. We
commend it to the attention of our readers t
