Amnesia) ROBBIRT.—A young man, fireman
at the Jail, was arrested - on Mends) , night about
eleven o'clock, and locked up for hearing, on
a charge of attempting to rob an attorney of
thin city named Blood. Yesterday morning
Blood deposed that on Monday night about elev.
en,o'elook be was chased by the prisoner on
Grant street, and that he took refuge in Walk
er's Saloon, Smithfield street. The prisoner
followed him. The deponent asked the company
there to drink with him, when, as he had biz
pocket-book in his hand to pay the bill, the prig_
one?, having seen that the door was open, pul
led out a knife and snatched at the pocket-book,
and struck at deponent. Some of the company
instantly seised the prisoner, and struggled:with
bins, during which he out one of them on the
hand severely. The pocket-book , contained about
$B6. Upon searching the prisoner, a great many
keys were found upon him.

day, and made oath that a ybung man named
John Alston with four others ravished her per
son on Sabbath night. One of the party, who Iy
not yet arrested, invited her to go to Church,.
and when returning, lid tried to get her to go
into s stable; she refused, whereupon he and
the others, who were in
- waiting, seised, gagged
and carried her - Into the stable where they an;
ootoplished. their diabolical designs.

line of the Third wood, and has always borne a

locked up In the tombs, until yesterday morning,
when a hearing was had before Mayor Adams,

hound, bee circulated all over the country. It
is therein stated that the Cuban blood-hOund is
used in the South to catch Mimes. This, we
are assured, is an error. The Cuban blood
hound, the most ferocious of the dog species,
was imported from Cuba to hunt the Indians In
the Florida swamps. They aro of most cruel
and 'ferocious disposition. The bound used in
the South for slaves is the Doer bound, much

Patunnernettor.—Street Commissioner Hobson,
of Allegheny, deserves credit for the energetic
manner i,n which he is entering upon the clean
ing of the streets

at least the lower part of it—is as neat as a new
pin, the great quantity of dirt, which had accu
mulated during the winter, being piled Itp con
veniently for being carted away. We commend
his example to the Commissioners of this city.

was arrested yesterday and committed to jail on
a charge of Assault and Battery. He was com

abused to make his escape.

his opinion that the rights of the people of

Nottrose, April B.—The eteamer Roanoke,
from New York, ran into the schooner Sidney,
of Philadelphia, on Saturday night, off the Capes
of the Delawares, sensing the echooner to oink.
One man wasdrowned. The Roanoke was con
siderably damaged.
The captain and crew of the schooner Mary
land of New York, has been seised and the ves
sel brOught hither from Hampton Roads, in con
sequence of the captain refusing to allow his
vessel to be searched for runaway slaves In ac
cordance with thalami of Virginia. A company
of military accompanied the expediVon in pur
suit of the vessel, and the captain and crew are
now in prison here. It is supposed that there
are slaves concealed on board. The affair hoe
caused great excitement.
The schooner Massie, of New York, has been
floated off of Cbintoagne.
Br. Loom, April 7.—Election returns -as far
as io, indicate that John How, Democratic can
didate for hfayoroand the the whole Democratic
ticket, is electeeby about 1,500 majority. Both
branches of the city Council are without doubt
Democratic. The Democrat office is Illuminated,
and ranch rejoicing prevails among the Demo
errata.

rell of Kansas Is said to be in Washington for
the parpop Of consultation with the authorities
relative to the course judicially to be pursued
towards officers of the State organization.
Some . of the Prominent Southern Congress
men are urging a union on Senator Fitzpatrick
of Alabama for the Democratic nomination for
the Presidency.

Washington correspondent ewes that the French
and En g lish Ministers declare that detachments
of men will be landed from their respective
squadrons on the onset of Central America to
assist the "Costa Siesus in their war against
Nicaragua.
The brig "Eureka" was advertised to leave
New Orleans on the let inst., for San Juan Nica
ragua, with a number of volunteers for Walker's
army, and the eteamerCharles Morgan is adver
tised to leave on the 10th for the same destina
tion by a company recruited by Oen. Hornsby,
who will accompany them.

Democrats have elected 89 Representatives!, and
the Opposition 60. Returns yet to come in are
expected to be favorable to the Opposition,
making the House probably sure and the Senate

election held yesterday, Wm. D. Laurence, Re.
publican, was elected Mayor by a majority of
about 200. The Republicans also carried four
