Tue liirsiza.linsonss.—After a weary rest, of.
three months, our city is again alive with the
bustle of business. The wharf is a scene of ac
tivity worthy of specialobservation. The optician,
levee, extending from the Monongahela Bridge
to the Point, is covered with freight, loading
and unloading; the immense piles of goods be
fore the boats extending from the water's edge
to the top of the levee. It is a difficult task to
thread it in safety. Probably at no former
period bee the wharf bean no thoroughly covered
with freight.
- Muth .of this freight has been accumulating
here during the winter from the East. 'A
great
deal has already gone forwsCrd, and the boats
going out are filling np every available inch with
it bat the warehouses are not yet empty, and It
will take some time before there is any apparent
ebb in the stream. Our manufacturers are
also ,ehlppingSreely, as they will _continue to do
throughout th - e season.
The throng of drays upon the streets is worthy
of our busiest seasons hitherto. The receipts of
produce and merchandise from below are but
just beginning; and if the river should keep up
throughout the Spring, as there ls now every
probability that it will, the business of forward
ing will be exceedingly brisk.
As the spring season is but just opening, we
- • cannot yet speak of the probable full extent of
transactions among the jobbers and wholesale
honest bit, so far; the promise is exceedingly
good, and is equal, if not superior to that of any
previous 1581180 D.
Altogether, we all have reason to be gratified
with the measure of malarial prosperity which
oniony is enjoying. The epasmodio .and un
natural growth which has fallen to the lot of
some other western cities has not been felt hero;
but In ire stead there is, a healthy, regular and
satisfactory Increase in population, wealth, en
kindle and resources which gives asminuthe of
permanent growth," and progress
. whith admits
of no reaction. '
Thera is. less of the spirit, orbooting about
the people" of Pittsburgh, and the "keep it before
the people" style, thattabout any ether import
ant place in the Onion: Perhaps we Should be
more highly valued if it were, otherwise; but we
cannot be made to believe that there are many
who infer that Pittsburgh Is not steadily pro-
Ilifendull and Prilteldliffi , because we are not
forever parading our prosperity. •

It Is not to be rruppo;ed that there was anything

The packet ship Germania, Capt. Wood; arkieh

fearful work of the iceberg. The Germania ex
perienced severe westerly gala during tem entire

rifle hurricane from the South which lasted
twelve holm and blew the tails out of the gee
kers. On the 26th of Feb:, inlatiinde 45° OW,

and that same night entered a field of ice
extended to the North West es fa as the eye.

Icebergs were seen from onboard the Germania

On the 28th of Feb. a ship's boat seen ahead of
the Germania. A boat was immediately sent
fronnthe latter to the resew, when a sad speo , -
tale presented itself. in the boat adrift were
found one living man and four dead bodies, one
of the latter being that of a female. The sur
vivor' Thomas W. Nye, of New Bedford, eat
amid the dead, frozen in hie hands and feet, and
himself nearly dead from starvation. He and
the (dead by his aide. were • all that remained
above the waters, out of thirteen who nine days
before had left the amok of the ship-John Rut
ledge, Capt. Kelly, of •this port, belonging to
Marie. Howland Ridgeway. The story of the
John Rutledge, as given .byldr. Nye Is u
lows r
The John Rutledge sailed from Liverpool on
the 16th of January. On the 18th of February,
in let. 45° 84 , , long. 46° 56 , W., she tell in with
the ice. On the 19th she entered a field of lee,
but cleared it Soon *afterwards, however, on
the same day, she encountered en iceberg which
stove a hole in her bow, and damaged her to
.8110 b an extent, that at ea o'clock in the eve-
ning she was a complete wreck and evidently
sinking. Nothing remained but for those on
board to abandon the wreck as best they could.
Five boots were lowered, four of which took their,
'loads and left. In the fifth boat, which was the
one found by the Germania, the mate of the
John Rutledge, Mr. Atkinson, and several oth
ers were just about entering, when it broke
'adrift with the thirteeuSiready in it, leaving the
mate and thole with him to go down with the
wreck. Those in the beat now pulled it through
the water and ice as grilse they were able, but
seen their compete was broken, and amid the
' snowy and cloudy weather which followed, they
know not which way they went. Days passed
on, and one by one of the thirteen in the boat,
sank in death, tram the combined effects of cold
and starvation, and were thrown overboard, un
til on the 28th of February, Mr. Nye ' with the
four latest dead, among whom was bire. Atkin
son, the wife of the mate, were pinked np by
the Germania.
The Germania, after rescuing Mr. Nye, etood ,
to the Northwest until dark, and then lay-to un
til *light, in. hopes that some others of the
drifting boats might be seen. None, however
were disetvered, mid she then sailed away to the
Southwest, keeping watch. At 9 o'clock, A. M.
there came on a very thick snow storm, which
cleared of at noon, but still do boats were to be
sine The Germania still kept to the South, as
the other beats were better manned than the one
found, dad oompeases on board, and it watt sup
' posed that they would pull for the Gulf Stream.
Mr. Nye could not tell which way the other boats
went, but a bark had oome out of the ice about
the same time, bound West, which may have pos
sibly picked np some of them. If not the prob
ability Is that those on board of the baste have
ere this perished. On the 11th of March, the
Germania experienced another hurricane, West-
North-West, which lasted three days, driving her
beck one hundred and fifty miles into the Gulf.
It was very cold and there was much snow. The
Germania wee twenty-five (tepee° the westward
of the Banks.
The reader will not fail to notice that the
track wheie the Germania encountered the ice
on the 28th of February, and where the John
Rutledge, woe knit upon it on the 19th of the
cams month, is about the same where the Arego
encountered it on the 18th of January, the At
tend., on the 19th of February, the Arago on the
22d, the Bettie on the 27th of the same month,
the Persia on 'the 81st of January, the Africa on
the 24 of March, and about the same as that
where the Edinburg on the 27th of March saw
what has- been supposed by some to be the
weak of the Peale, and the position of which
kola-the ocean we designated an • chart which
we published on Saturday morning last. An
edditional hope to that faint one which our ar
dent wishes still keep alive within us, that the
Pacific has not been lost upon that same icy ,
hock, may possibly be derived front the bed,
that neither the Germania nor the survivor from
the John Rutledge, brings any report of having
seen say vestige of wreck in nearly that part of
the ocean in which, we expressed our fear,
on Saturday last, that the Pantile had met
a fearful fate. We confess, however, that this
faatis of a character not to give that hope much
foundation on which to bandits nleeeent
