"Itia„Bnitott Traveler, which ie friendly to the Went, soya that the papers in that region have not yet .defined their position. Coldness and apathy every where, and enth usiasm nowhere, is rather ominous. The Boston Courier Bays: "The etormy pro ceeding of ;his commeation ended with the nom ination of one of the hest men in the Union as a candidate for President, but in a house so essen -4,117 divided against itself the nomination doee not appear to be s Latter of much consequence." The Boeton Atlas considers the nomination as not binding upon any party, and feels "perfect ly confident that Mr. 'illmore Rill hardly be a prominent candidate in the neat cantass." The Cincinnati Gazette will not support the nomination of Fillmore, and adds: ..We therefore most earnestly invoko the gen- Comm who have seceded from the Philadelphia Convention, to renal their mandate for a Con vention at New York on the 12th of Jane, and join heart and hand with the American Republi can movement Co to Philadelahia im the 17th of June, and exert their power in making a etrong and popular ticket for President and Vice President, and make a broad and liberal plat form, which every Ameriosn and every Republi can can support and stand upon, and go. into the contest united, and work shoulder to shoul der." The Cincinnati Commercial, ap able and widely 'circulated paper, says: ' • “We are glad that a nomination hie taken place and that It has taken place under each eiroumstances. We are glad that a portion of the North seceded, and glad also that a portion remained to preserve the nationality of the party. An entire dissolution of the order might, perhaps, be an object of desire., but this Is not, for the present, to be expected. A schism between the Northern and Southern eectious each faction re tilltalug its integrity, would 'EMT° left some strength in both for purposes of local disturbance and mischievous coaliticn. Now there is noth ing of the kind. The tumble-down edifice of nationality that exists, is the most appropriate of all plat:ea of refuge for despesperate Know Nothings. It is neceseary for the health of other parties that a place of refuge should be provided for the incurable of the Know Nothing order. Nothing could be more unfortunate for the health and well-being of the Republican body than their entrance into it. Nothing would put so sudden and so effectual a check upon emigration to it from other genitors. The effect of the nominal: lion at Philadelphia will be to add to that emi gration, by making apparent the antagonism be tween the itepubllcon and the Know Nothing parties. Desperate Know Nothings will re main where they are. The Democratic party will gain that portion of the seceders for which it has an affinity; andthe Republicans will seenre such as esteem the cause in which it is enlisted -the highest and best now embodied in our politi cal affairs. In this manner, order will grow out of the existing confusion. 'The third party in our.politici will drop into its appropriate sphere; • the revolution now going on in the 'materials of which parties are composed will be expedited rather than retarded, and the great trimmer of the Unitas..yr ... ill be found mitmpying a place ex ' ceedingly appropriate fcr the finale of his politi cal csreer, se the cendidate of a fag-end of un compromising impracticables.l' The Reale Expreu; published at the home or, Fillmore, tars of the nomination: ...The so celled American Party has vindicated its respectability as well as its devotion to the Stave power in thenomination of Mr. Fillmore, but in doing this it has rendered its Weakness in time. It cannot carry a Northern State. It may divide the - South with the administration, but we doubt it. We think the Republican Party will carry quite as many Slave bolding 13tiatiesas the Know Nothings. We are gratified pt-the,‘;nondastion of Mr. Fillmore.. It will 'detach every honest Free Seiler from that party and send him into the Republican ranks where he belongs. It brings men and issues _into the right potation, and will aid in bringing the country back to a healthy Admblistratien of its arfatm." , - _,The New York Herald pictures s gloomy pros : pent for the llindoo ticket: "The labor,' of thelste National Know Nothlitg Nominating Convention have reunited in the formal dissolution of the American party, and are to be followed up with a systematic and dis t perste attempt to galvanize Into active life again the stiffened remains of the old whig dynadty. What is the prospect before us? We think it may be briefly summed op. Mr. Fillmore will probably carry the three States of Delaware, Maryland and Kentucky. We conclude from the results of the late Southern elections, and their demoralizing effects upon the beaten party, that he cannot do much better. Mi. Fillmore, ae a , concession to the old whig party has been nom ; lusted, as the National Know Nothing:candidata for the Presidency. He has been deserted at the threshold by a Northern debsoltment or two „of, seceders, that leave him na obstMe, from present appearances, of the vote of a solitary frortheitt State, and with but a sorry show for `more than three States in tho South." The New Yurk Tribune, bays that Mr. Fillmore to simply brought into the canvass as an oh strltellin. If elected, he would be found the inveterate enemy of the canoe of freedom, but as be is out of the ronge of possibility, that fact becomes of small consequence: ' • "The teflon of the Philadelphia Convention is a maneuver of the New York Know Nothing and Silver Grey politicians to damage the Re publican party and injure certain leading iudi. vidnals therein. The Convention ham been need simply as an instrument tb fuither certain personal same of these politicians. They have thought that by taking. North Caroline and Lou isiana are doubtfakFloridanot impateriblet even Georgia may be fairly contested. There was no man whom the party could nave nominated who would probably poll so strong a vote throughout the Slave States as Millard Fillmore. And he need write no lettere nor make pledges. Ho has been tried, and by Slavery not found want ing. estimate that there are forty members of the Honed who will support Mr. Fillmore's elec tion, oat of something like Ode Hundred who were voted for as 'Americans.' Of this forty, about thirty were with Haven, Humphrey .Mar shall and Zollicoffer id opposing the election of Speaker Banks to the bitter end. They would in no ease vote for Betake, though an avowed American, because be was not Pro-Slavery; they were for any Pro-Slavery Democrat in prefer ence to a Free-Soil American. Such were and are the men who have nominated and will sup port Mr. Fillmore. On the other hand, there are not ten of the One Hundred and Seven who voted for Banks who will now imstain Fillmore, •and not one of these was heartily for Banks from gest to last. "The friends of Free Kansas would have a hard battle this Antumn if their adversaries were united ; but with the nomination of Fill more and Donelson at Philadelphia, and of men equally obsequious to Slavery at Cincinnati, we ought to be able to triumph on thp direct vote of the People. Should the Fillmore diversion throw the Electoral Vote of Pennsylvania and New Jersey to the Democratic ticket, we must take our chance in the House, where we have co recently carried the Speaker, and where we shculd start witlithe vote of thirteen States cer tain, end a tie in three or four others. I think our chance there would be worth that of both the opposing parties together. "The nominations just dada ought to unite the North on the Republican Platform, while di viding the South between the two Pro-Slavery 'parties." OHIO ASD PERIIIiTLYANIA RAILUDAD.--Joeeph H. NICAILAOUA.—This fine country, so long the scene of intestine commotions, half-governed and semi-civilized, has lately become the cen tre of most important operation's, and must hereafter possess unusual interest to the citizens of the United States. The news from Nicaragua is up to the 19th of Feb. Up to that date the country continued peaceful, the Government of Gen. Walker in creasing in stability, and lie course progres sive. "The liberation of this important. section of Central Amerlcaii from the discordant factions who have so long desolated it—and the firm establishment of free American laws—have al - ready reflected their Influences on Europeon em igration, late advioes reporting the organization of extensive departures of Germans who desire' homes, for elan Juan de Nicaragua direct, and who will value aright this fine country and its noble institutions." "On the 10th twit a decree was publicly pro mulgated at the City of Grenada, claiming and annexing the whole Mosquito territory, as an integral portion of the State of Nicaragua, thus nullifying the Kinney purchase." "To the amazement of the Grenadian', a few hours afterward, a diplomatic corps headed by Col. Kinney, arrived frog See Juan del Norte, and received an/early audience of Gen. Walker. 1 From subsequent results, it appears to have ter minsted unfavorably to Kinney, who was placed on the following day under arrest, for some re marks on the conduct of the Government, and he is now banished from all the Nicaraguan— Subjoined is a verbatim copy of Mayor Martin's passport, in whose charge Col. Kinney was Bent to the Atlantic sea board:— "Head Quarters of the Army of Nicaragua, 1 . GRENADA, Febuary 14, 1856. j "Mr. Theo. J. "The government has favorably entertained the requisition of the chip masters for a eat:, stantial lighthouse at the port of San Juan del Sad, and has instructed the collector of customs there to proceed with its erection with proper dispatch." El El Nicaroguense of the 9th and 18th inst., tarnishes thictiollowing account of the Mosquito annexation, and of the interview between Messrs. Kinney and Walker:— On Saturday lost, just as our paper had issued, the Minister of Foreign Relations placed in oar hands the following decree, with an. order that it should be mabliidied ris soon as possible in a supplement, both in English and Spanitth. Monday came cloudless and .delightful. Re ligious ceremonies filled the square. with people. Early matins had passed away hostlie breath of ten thousand people. The tones of martial mu- Mc swept upward at the hour of mounting guard, when, lo! the ehrill scream of the steamer was heard, and anon the rumor spread!that Col. S. L. Kinney hail.arrloed In Granada. How or why he came, no one could explain. He almost for feited his reputatiOn, for Beatty , and to-clay a great many point knowingly, und with a peculiar expression, to the head, when he is spoken of. He did not improve this impression by his con duct after his arrival. The Colonel entered the city on foot, end after composing his toilet, pre pared for a formal 'whittle Gen. Wm. Walker, or "Uncle Billy!' as ho Is known in this Vicinity. About ten o'clock on Monday morning, there fore, as Gen.. Walker was sitting at his table overlooking a dispatch from a neighboring state, Col. Kinney entered the room, and advancing to the Commander in Chief, introduced himself. He was invited to take a Best, which he did; and as General Walker talks but little, and never, during business hours on irrelevant matters, ahe visitor was constrained to open the conversation, which we give, in substance. --Col. Kinney—The difficulties under which we labor in forming a peaceable government for Nicaragua, may be oeheumtasted by dividing the country and creating two states, one of which shall bo called Mosquitia. Col. Walker—lf Nicaragua chooses to divide her territory, she will do go without advising with any one, and last of all with Mr. Kinney. The visitor felt disoonoerted, bat he was not discouraged, as what follows will show : Col. Kinney—l have. come to offer my eervi , ces to the Republic, and feel confident my finan cial ability will he of great benefit la the pro ' ourement of money, the negotiations of loans and so forth. I eucceeded very well in such matters,in Texas. -. Gen. Walker—Your antecedents Preclude the passibility of the State's placing you in any offi chat position.' • Colonel Kinney was dismayed, and the inter. view ended, with the impressive caution from Gen. Walker to hie visitor that he should be particular in his speech, or he might be guilty of uttering treasonable language. Another interview was held In the afternoon, but it was curt, and ended in nothing. But a short space elapsed after the find inter view before orders were issued to the officer of the day, that Mr. Kinney could not be allowed to leave the Smite Of the city—he was a p risoner tti , the State. On the 16th, the government ordered Col. Kinney to leave the State, and he left Granada that evening. His destination, it is elated, is New Orleans. Some excitement prevails in regard to a com , bination said to be forming by the Goverunient of Guatemala, Costa Riese, And other Central States, . against . the NiearagOn Government of Gen.
