There is nothing in Mr. Buchanan's correspondence that war rants the statement that be purposed going to the continent on the 10th inst. Surely, the 0 etupid folly of running two seta of candidates on the Anti-Nebraeka issue, and thus to insure the defeat which, united, the North has yet to 1 make uncertain, *ill not be perpetrated by men ' who have shown such an attachment for the 1 Freedom principle as to destroy a cherished 1 party fur refusing to recognize it. But these men were not alone in repudiating the action of the Converdiou. Two thirds of the New York Delegatiot, who voted for George Law and Sam Houston, shook Fillmorestro from their skirts, and homed a protest fuller stinging rebuke of the nomination. After doing this they visited the canons of the true Free-State men, and desired at least to whines its deliberations and to take part in Its lotion, if they coahicon eistently do so. They Baked a representative upon the Executive Committee, whichwas grant ed, and evinced a disposition—So intense Is their disappointment at their own failure and their hatred to Fillmore—to aoceptthe Anti-Nebraska Irene, and do works meet for repentance. There is a poetic jennies in the defeat of the Lew men in the Convention, after they had pre served Its unity through a week of tumult.— But for the Law influence; the C913T001100 would ' never have got to a nomination it ill, If the other set of New. York dough:Aces could have bid a taste of the tame experience, the North would be amply compensated for its detest.— Ais goon as It can be realized that subserviency to the Slavery interest on' the part of Northeifh men don't pay, then wt-' can hope to see it crushed out. George Law and Henry J. ° GardL net, and their retainers, have takes the lesson: but there are ready pupils of the same sort in abut:lai:me yet. Doughfaces do netlike history an phllotophy teaching by example; nothing but a prettiest personal lesson cures them of their depravity., '''''e • It cannot Le essildo that there ever was in America before 'such a long.continued series of tumultuous meetinge, by any one body, as this American convocation has illustrated. The eight days of its Sitting Were one continued disorder. Not one speaker in twenty was heard i l y a quarter of the Convention. It was a gross caricature of the freedom of an exulted town meeting. Parliamentary law was 'Masked-, decency violated—courtesy insulted. Not a day passed without cornea - of disorder and mufti- Rion and struggle, threatening perional contests, and in which all the coarser hue:mottles were lashed into furious excitement. 1 It is an im position to call it in National Convention of a great political party of the Model Republio of . Christenlom..T It was simply a tumultuous as semblage of thirlower order of politicians. Tbecgh the amount of talking done was great, the character of It was in inverse ratio. But few really good speeches were heard—the rest never were listened to. Gov. Call, of Florida, Percy Walker and Wra. R. Smith of Alabama, Mr. Hotelier of Virginia, and Messrs. Wadi. and Zcllleoffer if Tennessee, were the only real ly able speakers of the South. Gov. Johnston's defense of the delegates and State Council of Pennsylvania, with whom he sympathized, was perhaps the most logical and convincing effort of the whole erasion. it was listened to at mid night, after a previous stormy debate of five hours, and when the Convention was In an ex cited condition, with more respectful attention than any other speech at any time. The two speeches of Mr. Edmund Perkins, of Conn., the one in illustration of the politico-economic view of the Slaverrquestion and in definition of the Northern petition in regard to it, the 'other in taking leave of the Convention in behalf of the 'true men of the North, when it was impossible to stay with honor, were the moat effective of any on the Northern side of the house, and did both him and his Mate much credit. Though given upon the spur of the occasion, they em braced thoughts of imperishable value, uttered In burning words, and they may be usefully written out for publication. The brief speeches of Mr. Baldwin, Speaker of the House of Re presentatives of the same State, were also among the best. Connecticut, indeed, was most ably i and faithfully represented. she was the only I Northern State whose delegation presented an unbroken front against the overruling power of the doughfaces and eliveholders. Messrs Peck, Sperry, and Dunham fought toe battle for the North with untisoching ardor at every point and I on all occasions. 1 Whether the result. of thie Convention divide the Pro-Slavery or the Anti-Slavery party in the coming national contest, and give victory to the one or the other, is a problem yet to be 5.4 , 33 as 1.1e7 62 ' 1,08 33 4.073 1=- 11.V40 9G 2. ton 62 6.283.66- ~n 5 47 5..5.40 46 1,705 01 -9,..11$ 47 :..U2 , 2 73 1.54.14 3,6:7 11 TUI 44 44 SU— 1.176 36 Ward 460 00 1.1.42 63- 1.162 63 1,4Z0 6 P L . Its strength must of course be with the South:and there the Pro-Slavery Democracy has won • justifiable hold, that the slow, Americanism of Millard i'llbacre cannot hope to shake." Ficuroaiii rioatraarion.—We tan at last a Preafdential Candidate. The Americans, it Philadelphia, afraid of delay, have Mmidatad Millard Fillmore as tha atatulard bearer of their party in the coming Presidential oanvaes. As will have been mem from our reports of their prooeedings, this result was not emily or read ily attained. But the difficulty in the case did not grow out of any conflicting claims of rival candidatea, but was lolely due to the struggle for u plalorea. Apparently succesaful: at the outset in eecorlog the repeal of the Twelfth Bete tion, the Northern delegates finally found them, selves in quite no awkward a poeition, in con sequence of the adoption of the substitute.— And when they found, from the informal ballot, that Mr. Fillmore was likely to be the nominee, knowing perfectly well that they could nututhin tain themselves at home for a single day on ouch a Miele, they 'germinally Withdrew from the Conventien. Thin left it entlrely in the hands of the Southern delegates; and their object was, of course, accomplished in Mr. Fillmore's nomi nation, which was of more Wee to them than a dozen "Twelfth Sections" could possibly have been. The result in this case illustrates very forci bly the fact we have already noticed, that the coming contest must inevitably juin wholly upon the question of Slavery extension—and that no party can avoid taking ground , upon It.— The struggle in the American Convention upon the Platform showed clearly that, in the heart of that party, this issue was just' as clearly made ac in the country at large; and the nom ination proves that the sentiment of the Ameri cans themselves upon this subject was far stronger than upon their own profaned priuci plea. Mi. Fillmore has been nominated, not because he agrees in opinion with the party which has made him its candidate, 'for by no act of hie life has be ever signified any such agreemeei; —but because it , was tinder his Ad mlnietnttiou, and by his official influence, that the Compromises of 1850 were adopted, and be cause he has beenprueed to be entirely accepta ble to the Pro-Slavery sentiment of the South ern States. This was the issue in that Cooven- lion, notwithstanding its profesaions:, The South has nominated Mr. Fillmore because he is pledged to the. Fugitive Slave Law, and to .11 the measures of the Pro-Slavey propitgandiste at the South. Debut been preferred on this ac count to George Law and other candidates, whose opinions on this subject may bo sound enough but for whose °theist notion in the prem ises the paid affords no security. By this nomination, In our opinion, the Amer icans have lost the ?magi of a new name, and have assumed old quarrels and political as well as panel:al controversies which belong to' the past. Mr. Pathos:, as a candidate, will ideal ably renew all the old contests and render it necessary to fight over again battles that Were supposed to be ended. Underhim, the Share" issue will inevitably be the main issue of the Ile will draw some strengthoadonbt ,dly. from the racks of those who approve of the Pro• Slavery policy which lie adopted, and ilho are willing to leave all the wrongs at that p al s y as well as of the acts by which it has been followed ouredreased. But this will wean the Demooratio candidate, *boom he may be, far more than his Republican opponent. While therefore, Me, hue many claims to the oopildence of the .party which has adopted him, as a man of respectable char acter, and as having throWn the whole weight of official influence against tho senti ment end policy of Freedom, his nomination must awaken old resentments,. revive old jeal ousies, and eaddlo upon the new Party coots°. lersies and odium ITU& it ehonid ham endeav eyed tO avoid.
