Penny, of MoKeespo Tllll NOMINATION of M • • soon to comment at - tbe A • wit " '2 • I- comi, ,intelligible conclusion. One thing la;-5owever;qalte evident. The nomination of Ifr. Fillmore is exceedingly diataaterni to the get m.mof the Anti-Administration votere of the Norther!. States. - Before Me adratnigratlon explred, icillad eonttived se entirely to alienate the respect and affections of the Whip of the Free Stiges v lbat when the Baltimore Conven ttim met, lie:had but few votes out of the Slave States, which went for hlmmimost in a body. Considering his antecedents before he went into office, and the confidence and reipect entertained for him in the North, and the distrust felt for him in the South, and contrasting this with the great change effected by the close of his term of office, it is very evident that he had anted in a partial spirit towerdathe Slaveoeraoy, end had greatly wronged, and. grossly deceived those who had the most treaded hita. Probably there is no man in the North more unpopular with the muse!, and there is not the slightest probability that he can carry a single Free State. In this • region, his nomination is received with icy coldness by the mambas of t h e party which nominated him, and we do not believe they will :support him. The Republics! party ein, under no eiraumstances unite in hie support, so that there is now an end to the doubt as to Up number of candidates. There will certainly be three in the field, if Fill more does not decline. Reding at the' question kith such lights as are now before us, we incline to the opinion, that the South is playing a deep gamo. We do not helloes they will give Fillmore and Donald eon one Southern olectoral vote. The object Ii to conquer by dividing the North. • The South will threw its entire Vote for the Democratla pro slavery sectional candidate. By dividing the North, Pennsylvania, and probably one or two other of the Free Shitest may be carried for slavery.' This would secure the triumph of the slave-power, and devote Kansas, New Mexico, and Utah to slavery. Such is the programme . The picture is dark, but it is best to look it fair ly in the face. There is hope in one quarter, and only our, and that is that the groat Republi can party which is noir organized, may attract to its broad and liberal banner, a sufficient number of-the voters of the Free - States to nul- lify this deep laid scheme. There is a wide spread feeling in Um North, in opposition to the encroachments of !shivery which only needs to be united to be eictoriona; We do not de opals of this union. We trust the people of the Free States, will not Submit to be dragooned into obeying the behests of the slave power for ever. Tie Bereemomi CoxvErnos. —The New York Commercial, speaking of the doings of the Republican National Convention, says: "And what was done during the whole tint. day t Practically nothing at aIL Not a single new idea was broached; apparently not an ad dresa was made worthy of a ward meeting, and come were delivered that ought never to have parsed the lips or been conceived In the hearts of those who uttered them. All that was done wile the keeping up of excitement to the fever point. Something wee said at the commence ment about caution, but it fell Idly upon the bearers, and agitation and discontent sod angry feeling were the natural consequence of the speeches that were made. There wan neither solidity, nor depth, nor grandeur, nor permanen cy, in anything that wee said or done. We have been sorry - to observe the course pursued of late by this paper, which is not only in opposition to its peethistory, tut manifesto a weakness and ignorance on political questions Which must ho very damaging to its reputation. We were present at the Convention dazing its whole pro ceetlitige, and we pronounce the above descrip tion as false in every particular, stumps caries tore of this highly respectable and noble body of men. We have attended many Conventions, bag never sue where there was more dignity, more ability, more eloquence, nor a spirit of more elevated patriotism. There was nei ther agitation, discontent, nor angry feeling; but the utmost heartiness, fraternal feeling and • harmcify. Men of grey hairs, of national repu • tation, of distinguished ability, took an active part in the proceedings, and all the excitement manifested did honor to the heads and hearts of the TVA multitude present. It was such ex citement as would be-naturally looked for in an assembly of honest and earnest patriots, met to consider the wrong and injustice inflicted upon them by an aristocratic dame of slave owners, through the connivance and aid of a corrupt Imminent To C,oattssponomtre.—A correspondent complains of the treatment the Stockholders o the Allegheny Valley Railroad received at Logan's and Parnassus gallons, on the day of the open)ng. They were Invited to attend the openingAut the cars passed on without admit ting them, alleging a want of room. This was no doubt the true reason, but we think it would have b een . better to Mire stopped and taken on some as delegates for the rest, and apologised for want of room. He also complains of the high price of freight on the road. We suppose the Directors have endeavored to decide to the beet, of-their ability. They may have wide mistakes which ezierlenee will remedy. TELII CAROLS ORPHANS; or, Light" and Shadows of Southern Life. A We of lionleiana. Ny Jams B. Peacock; M. D. of Atiisissippi, New York; Derby & Jackeon. The Lights of Southern life are, according to this book, that the negro slaves are better off, and are more happy than is represented at the north. The shadows are, the dreadful condi tion in which an educated, delicate, and sensitive quadroon nearly white, le placed by the laws of slavery. Harrowing oases of this kind are com mon in the South, so that if it were 01012 true that tho ignorant !tepees are as well off as if in freedom, these exceptional cases are attended with an amount of distresa and injustioe euffi• oient to condemn the whole system to universal detestation. - The above works . are for Bale in the city by Gildettfenny & Co., and Miner & Co. Pray, Mr. Editor, let us have some facts and solid arguments on the "paving law" and its proposed repeal, and a cessation of bitter personal attacks. We all esteem Judge Wilkins, and know he la not entitled to be called a "hoary headed do tard." Colonel Black stands deservedly high in the estimation of thepublio. Thos. M.
