other evils of the fall and winter of 1854. Hun

want the means to procure a comfortable living,

forget the. generous willingness to aid on the
part of_ those who had .the means, the venous
associations established, both by ladies and
gentlemen, and last, though by no means least,
notwithstanding the objections urged 'pint
them, the opening of the Soup Houses.

the Board of Guardians Is daily thronged'erith
applicants. for. assistance, we have but the

fully apparent - last year; no Sonp Houses have
been called into existence, nor Howard Associa

One year ago to-morrow, the first Soup House
wal'opened. It was announced in the public
prints and at 11 o'clock on the 25th of January,
the doors of the Soup Home ea Smithfield street,
were thronged. We republish the account of

—At 11 o'clock on Thursday forenoon, the doors
or a BOup House were thrown open on Bilventh
street, above the. Canal Bridge. A throng of
''twapplicants had gathered around the door, each
one bearing a pitober, pan or kettle for receiving
hie or her ahem of the boiling hot soap—rich,
savory, excellent, proper map. The good lady
into whostiliands boa beep entrusted the pre
paration of the nutritious fluid, stood beside the
great kettle ready to ply thiladle with impaitial
hand. The work of diztribotion,began, and ere
two o'clock, illty=elx gallons of soup had beenslis
lributed'amongst eighty applicants, and moat of
these Led" In addition, received a sufficient' sup
ply of bread to satisfy present wants.
Wane informed that as many as thirty appli
cantawere compelled is go away without re
ceiving anything—the quantity prepared having
'been entirely used up. - Who knows but some of
these poor creatures slept supPerleas last night?
Let 'the benevolent open theik eyes to the extent
of isuffering amongst the Poor in our city, and
give liberally to the support of the Soop Houses.
One old woman who attended on Thursday said
Me has had nothing in her house to eat since the
previous morning.
The Seventh Street Soup House WM estab
lished tuotwill be kept op by the Howaid Asso
ciation, and it is but eimp l e justice to say that

Donoso:—A constable of the Court was yes
terday diiveted to arrests certain party indicted
for selling liquor, upon a process. fie preced
ed to the place of business of the accused and
informed him ortila object. • The latter expres
sed great willingness to accompany the consta
ble, but desired. the favor of time to make a
change in hie raiment. To ,this the constable
made no objection, thinking, doubtless, he could
manage to pan the time comfortably enough
in the bar-room until his pristmei model his ap
pearance.: Time passed away; sue enough; the
constable fait fidget of Impatience, began to

&MI Pennsylvania Railroad, on Tuesday, to the
,Expreea train:die here at 8 r. x., that day,
.whioh might hate termimited fatally. As - the
train was passing Loudonville, about 155 miles
from Pittsburgh, one of the fore 'wheels of the
-- trstpaisenger car broke, causing , the oar to tly

. short time. Only eight persons were in it, and
all were more or less injured, but none fatally.

ButenEa.—A few nights ago a desperate
fight took place in daltsbnrg, between a citizen
of the borough and three Railroad IrLahmen.
One of the latter was nearly killed.
Shortly afterwards a serious riot broke out
between different tribes of Irishmen at Oonnor'e
boarding house. Shelalahs, brick-bats, pistols,
knives and hatchets were profusely and indis
criminately need. One of the;hioters had his
skull opened, and all engaged in the affair were
more or less badly Injured.
Last week, a young man shot an old one in
the head. An old fend existed between them,
and on the assertion referred to, they were de•
termined to settle it. The young fellow first
tried to shoot the other In the ear and then 10
the back of the head, but the caprarould not ex
plode. Stationing himself In front he pulled the
trigger again, with more success, the pistol ex
ploding, and the ball taking off a portion of the
scalp.

tion before the Mayor of the larceny of an Over

party of rowdies who visited his house on •
sleighing excursion. On Tuesday' offioer Reed,
of Alderman Donaldson's police; arrested one of
the accused, George Hall, and took him before
that magistrate, who, upon examination, com
mitted him for farther hearing on Friday at two
o'clock, P. M.
Mayor Bingham lodged a commitment against
him on the.same charge. A question as tojneis

Fate DISTRIOTS.—The Board of Underwriters

the fire, the city being divided into fire districts.

Misusers! —Rev. D. Heron and
Bev. W. Calderwoori, of the Reformed Presby
terian Church, arrived safely in Calcutta, Nov.
Bth, on their way to Agra and Salterunner,
Northern India. The meeting, In this city, in
May last, at which theie Missionaries received
their parting instrietloni, will be remembered
by many of our readers.

Notifies was 'arrested yesterday, and arraigned
before Mayor .dame for Interfering with the
police while they were in the act of arresting
Clarke Hosack the day before. His Honor, the
Mayor, imposed a fine of $2O, which the accused

mitted.
Caarrairr rinxirr, Masonic:tr.—The Allegh
eny Police, for the two or three days past, have
-been doing a large business on Chestnut street,
Allegheny. Clarke Houck was arrested there
.bn Tuesday, Edward bottles, Nicholas &Ply and
three or four others, yesterday. The grade of
offences committed by these persons, does not
exceed Disorderly Conduct.

ARRIVAL OF THE AFRICA

The Steamer Africa arrived to-day with Liver
pool dates to the 9th. Her DOME consists mere
ly of the extension of peace rumore received by
the last arrival. Russia's answer to the propo
sitions could not possibly be expected before the
10th inst. but would probably be delayed some
days longer. It Is anticipated that it will con
tain neither absolute assent nor refusal but will
name counter propoadi to be- settled by re
newed conferences.
The feeling in England continues warlike and
in France is again becoming so in consequence
of Russia's incessant preparstions for the Spring
campaign.
There is nothing of importance from the Cri
mea. The docks at Sebastopol were blown up by
the French on the 22d of December.
Affairs in Asia present no new features.
The news from Great Britain was not of much
importance.
. A grand Council of Allied Generals has been
opened st Pries.
The Conference in relation to the Sound Dues
has been postponed Indefinitely.
Sweden ie making active warlike preparations.
The Steamship Baltic from New York arrived
at Liverpool on the morning of the Sth.

lily of the disposition of Russia to consider the
allied proposals.

telegraph.—Jan. 9th —The English funds yes
terday experienced a rally of f it the opening of
the market, but a relapse took place subsequent-,
ly and at the close the prices stood at the rates of
the previous day. Tim money market was easy
and the demand good at 6 per cent.
At Paris the 8 per cents closed et I®l decline,
but the foreign exchange was generally better.
Asts.—The Russian army took up its position
on Kars on the 3rd December, the troops being
quartered in the town, leaving a email detach
