' "caused the division el Ca? Wiest eoleinastiral bodies," and that It is "beginning to undermine cur great institutions for the spread of the Gos pel." The principal ecclesiastical division is that of the Methodist Episcopal Church. which was - not caused by abolitionism but slavery. Abo litionism had wholly failed to rend the church, and bad separated fromit, and bad formed a new organization, when slavery, In accordance with its aggressive spirit, demanded the recognition of slavery in the person of one of the Bishops, whose duty it was to preside over Northern con ferences.- -The church had been yielding by lit tle and little to the encroachments of slavery, but this was more than it could bear, and it refused to submit to the imperious demand. The Louis ville Convention immediately followed, and the greater part of the South seceded. Thus Boma not the principle of freedoni, but the Bares. elan of slavery which caused this eceleenstical division. The same is true in relation to the "great institutions" of which the Observer speaks. Slavery has demanded the mutilation of some standard works, and the rejection of others, be came slavery could not stand the light of truth. It has also required such recognition of slavery as Christian men who believe it to be a great evil cannot consent to. This is what is under mining the great benevolent institutions. The spirit of vire Christianity to opposition to the free *hit of slavery, Bible and Protestant Christianity, is invincibly opposed to the spirit of American slavery, which forbids the bondsman the privilege of reading the word of God, which destroys the marriage and filial relations, which introduces a vast system of conoubinage, and raises up in this enlightened America a vast horde of trrutallzed heathens. It was not the principle of freedom, or abnll tionism, which originated the present strugg e, which the Observer deplores as threatening to eeveitheßnion. The anti-pebraeka excitement I is entirely owing to the brinciple of slavery, which Is rot content with lees than complete &minion. It was elavery which violated its oompact with freedom, and laid violent hands on the patrimony of the Free States, and which has outraied the lawi, disgraced the institutions, and shed the blood of the citizens of the Repub lic. For Gals foul spirit the Observer has no et bake. AB the vials of its wrath are poured out upon the, friends of freedom—it does not even hint that Were is anything wrong, or can be any , • thing wrong , in the principle of slavery, or in its acts or effects. Such a religious paper, so unjust to a large part of the people, so untrue in its statements, so false in its conclusions, so slanderous in its assertiotes, and so derogatory to the spirit of true Christianity, we mina. commend. We hurl hack upon itself its charge of Irreligion and infidelity against the anti Slavery men of the country, who are now so gallantly steaming the out,-poured torrent of slavery propagandism, and we edviso its editors to give It a character more in ficaordaeoe with. Christianity and free dom, or !remove it to the congenial climate of 'Richmond, where free-schools are denounced, and the slavery of white men, yea of all poor men, Is defended. Houses or EXPLOTIIIMIT.—The Philadelphia Pentusylranian alludes to the system of bane valence which bee been adopted in that pity for the relief of destitute classes, and. epeake of it as "tested and found good." The same plan, eo far se has been adopted in New York, hoe uniformly proved satisfactory. The' Pennsyl vanian eggs: "The city is divided into geographical divi sions, and in each of them there is a House of Employment, containing ' work-rooms for. the women, nurseries for their children, eating rooms, and a store for the sale of the goods made by the inmates, who receive for each day's work a shilling in money, besides warm horsing, good nontishment, careful nursing, and personal benevolence which are is frequently distributed through this channel. Among these are large gifts of fuel. active medical and many instances of that kind and unceasing variety of advice and support which distressed and suffering women receive from themees, whose attendance and constant watching, d ed by large sympathy and prudent liberality, best prove their fitness." . &Issue Sants.—A . London letter of Decem ber 18th; to the National. Intelligence?, says: "The system of espionage established by the Russian Government throughout Europe was perhaps never better organized or in fuller oper ation than at present. People employed as spies are knovin - to Use in London and to be scattered generally throughout England. They were de tected even in India a few years since. A Ro man Catholic priest, (Vladimir Petcherine,) charged with burning Protestant bibles In Ire land, but acquitted for venter evidence,. is known to be a Russian by birth, and suspected of being a spy. France, Spain, Portugal, Austria and Italy, and it Is said the United States have at this moment a number of secret Russian agents on their respective nibs." - - - NEWSPAPER PEorrre.—The New York Mirror lutist yle learn from good authority. and we are glad to Itemize the fact that the net prat s of the Tribune newspaper for the past year amount to $95,000; and that the pronto of the Herald ex ceed $75,000. 'The Courier and Eaquirer and the Journal of Commerce have probably each balance of about $50,000 on the right tilde of the ledger, and the Commercial Adis:Tiber $25,- 000. The Timm if we may judge from the alacrity with which - Mr. Jones accepted Mr. Harper's offer to sell thirty shares at $50,000, in also doing a good business; and the Express, we are happy ko learn, has found the past year one of unprecedented prosperity; and the same la Bald to be true of the Post and the News SPECIAL NOTICES. • • Interesting those suffering from ocrigin, licietay.lbeed in Dr. McLane, COD &mixt Libor PIM. grft.; %nowt:4 LI • webby of certlikitee received dM ly from aor own entre= -2j Arigbat 1, mai Thle le to =tor that.
