Tna Leen Death 130TOMAY011.—The last for

61 the Death of the Spanish Doke 130TOICE1011,
by suicide. This gentleman was born in Phila.
delphis, and possessed at the time of his death,
in the right of his American wife, daughter of
Gov. M'Kean, a large estate in this county, in'
the townships of Ohio and Sewickley. The lands,
amounting to several thousands of acres, be
longing to this estate, are among the finest in
those townships, andleve been 'duet' out fin
many years,' to the great detriment of the neigh
borhood. We hope these lands will now be
brought — into market, and thus give greater
metope to private enterprise and public Improve
ment. The PAlletelliphia Bulletin gives the fol,
lowing amount of the deceased Duke:
"Ia 1796, while the seat of 'government of the
United States was in thuo city, Don Carlos Msr

an arabusadoi from Spain. He was a young
and accomplished man, and soon after his ar
rival Moe he married Sally Stallean, odanghter
of Gm Moires; of Pennsylvania, a lady ode

Marquis resided at the corner of Second and',
Pine streets, and there, his eon, the subject of
thiserotize, was born. He inherited the es ate,
and titles of VA father, but on his marriage alto
the house of Sotomayor, took the name of Deice
offlotomayer. Having resided in this country
till he was twelve years - Of age, be received his
early, edaoation here and those who have met
him in Europe of late years, observed in him
many traces of his American birth and training.
The Duke of Sotomayor was a diplomatist,
like his father, and has always had great Mu
aloe in the Spanish government. He has held
the important Aces of Ambassador to-Franca

managed by some half dozen officeholders (under
' that eminent Statemen and Patriot Frank Pierce)
who sold out to the Herds at an incredibly low
figure (a ell prospect of obtaining admission to
the Cincinnati Convention) though probably at
the full value of the article transferred.' To ap

please to remember that they are the same "cor

words for freedom in 1847—that they withdrew
from Die Democratic State Convention of that
year because the Hunker majority refused to
endorse the Wilmot Proviso--that they taffies;
quently held a Convention'of their own sort, re
pudiated the Hunker platform and defeated its
candidates—that in 1848 they rejected Cass for

They will bo mistaken who take it for granied
'-'
that this disgraceful spostany on the peet of be
leaders of the lateEof I Party, will necessarily
carry over to the aide of the slavery propsian
diets all the rank and file of that party. The
fact is the, spouters bad been talking for Bnnedrob
so long that many of those who train In the
ranks had come actually to believe in the idea of
freedom and such like things; and many of them.
will be quite likely to revolt at this sudden order
to deliberately march over to the enemy. Ton
may rest assured that the result will their a
large accession to the Republican army. Had
the leaders taken this ground before the elettdou
last fall, there is not a reasonable doubt but the
Republicans would have swept the State l ike a
whirlwind. Indeed the real friend' of freedom
have large cause to rejoice at this final dire of
the wily Sotto, as their power to deceive; the
honest Free Boilers A now gone for ever. Those
who sympathise can now. act In concert, and eo
acting, openly end aboveboard, she Empire State
will ever be found proudly marshaled on 1 the

I sow a new repeating rifle a few days rgo,
the invention I believe a gentleman of this
city, which- bide fair to supersede an, the
other shooting things now in use both for sport,
ing and purposes of war. It is loaded with
80 conical balls, each containing within itself
the powder and cap necessary fee tiptoed; and
when once loaded, which is a brief op en non,
the piece can be discharged, 80 timesin succes
sion, as rapidly as one' can-cock and eight, It
lea very easy matter to load and dischargis the
aim 30 times per minute. 'The ball beingicon
structed on 'the' Minis principle,• this ripe is
calculated for long distances as well as rapid
firing. Imagine the slaughter two hostile armies
would make with thin gun, or the perfection of
sport attainable by the hunter who should find
himself in the midst of one of those herds of
