Where the fever is preceded bye chill, It isoften

without leading to a discovery of Its connection
with 'the disease in the lungs. It creeps upon
the patient insidiously, and increases by slow
degrees. Towards evening he feels chilly, or
shrugs up his shoulders, or tune his back to the
fire. After he get Into bed, the hands and feet
are hot, and towards morning he perspires—at '
lint slightly,- but as the disease advances, so
profusely, as to drench everythingebout the bed.
Probably, one in .every ten -escape" „ni g h t
sweats" sltogether. These sweats have • aloe
contuuslon;with sleep. They rarely occur while
the patient is awake. So distressing is this
symptom, that many afflicted by it dread the re
turn of night The exhaustion and rapid west
ing of the ffiseh_which occur In the advanced
stages of this dilemma, are in a great degree due
to the debititatifig effecter of nights weals.

earliest symptoms; wastiug is the peculiar mark
of aim amuse. It goes on, though the appetite
maybe good, and the food abundant and nutri
ent The; however, is not the - case invariably,
ter the disease not nafruneastly makes considera
ble program before the patient becomes visibly
thinner--a reaultseen most commonly in young.
women. When a person, without any apparent
cause, becomes thin, and has, at the same time,
a quick pulse and hurried breathing, you may -
almost certainly conclude that there is int/chief
in the chest, though that circumstance may
never have been suspected.

pressed after the first few months of the dleease.
The destructive change" going on in the lungs
seem to absorb all the energies of the system.
Often the attention Is not even attracted to the
lungs, until long after the menstrual function
has become suppreued. It is no unfrequent
occurrence for strong medicines to be puseribed
by the careless, physioian, to restore the menses,
and he only demean the folly end cruelty of
such a onus when the disease in the lungs be
comes too manifest to be any. banger' Effetaken.
Tommie his careleseness, he then attributes the
deposit of tubercles in the lungs to the dialer
rangement of menstruation, while, in reality,
this is but one of the common consequences of
Consumption.
The simulation is always feeble in Consump
tion, as is msultested by habitual ecisiame of the
hands and feet. Another very common indica
tion of this dismal" an appearance of blueness
below the eyes, often observable before any other
symptom excites attention.
