the attention of all upon whom the buid Si of
extreme prices has fallen. The remedy is not
in Complaining, nor In blaming It upon specula
tors, but in ehail, ging the current of labor from
the city to the Country instead of from the coon
try to the city. Waving more farmers and pro
ducera and fewer consumers, so that our prudno- 1
Son may fairly keep pace with our consumption.
. Last year we had a light crop, and the whole
1 nation suffered, because the area of cultivation
( ems barely sufficient, with on image yield', to 1
supply our national wants. This year a heavy
foreign. demand comes upon us to absorb all of 1
and more than the simplus production, and we
are taxed again with last year's prices- As a
eeeseonenoe, our poor people, without . a eor.
responding inmates In wages, must soon find It
extremely difficult to obtain the means of ordi
' nary tivelihood. • Should we be subject to many
repetitions of this state of things, a time may
oome when famine will literally stare a large
portion of mirpopulation In the face. The only
hope of maps from inch a contingency Ii In a
large increase of the farming population of the
oinintry- Most certainly a great agricultural
nation like the United States should not twice be
caught with empty garners at the dawn of bar..
-vest. In such an exigenoy, the succession of
a bad season would well nigh MIA no.
Let us cultivate amiduoualy the arta, the sul
mums, commerce and 'manufactures, for these
are a part of, a great nation's life; bat, look a'
it as we may, Agriculture must and should ever
be one of the ruling pursuits in this Union. The
Oidture of the soil should keep pacitiwith the in- I
crease of population, and for every thousand
or ten thoosand additional months to feed, ihere
should be an equivalent addition of acres of wheat 1
and corn planted to supply them. Manufactories
I which give employ to a great number of peo
ple are constantly increasing. Public Works are
growingin number continctally--and through all
the rations avenues of Industry anti enterprule, the I I
consumers of food limier country are increasing 1
with a rapidity which can only be realised by
such as have Incidentally investigated the imb
filet. But with this inoream upon the one hand,
there is not a proportionite increase in the ex-
tent of cultivated land. Farmers' sons, instead
Of striking the plowshare Into the soil which
so kin dly invites them, think it more honorable
I to become clerks or merchants, lawyers or doe.;
tom, and the land is thus oftentimes cheated of
Its honest doe. Wly city and town pursuits
should be thought more respectable than that of
farming, we cannot divine. In a free country,
Agriculture stands deservedly in the front rant
of,honoraide and ennobling Occupations; and,
weighing fairly all the chances and victim' itudes
that belong to the multiform avocations of life,
it is In the long run the sweat; safest and most
remuneratite of any. The following remarks,
lit this connection, from the Toledo Blatk'are
timely, appropriate, and worthy of serious or&
sidiration.
4 Act aversion to the pursuit, of Agriculture is
Yung
up, and gaining strength la our oountry.
Young man—the sone of farmers—think it more
honorable, more genteel, to forsake the penult
of their youth, for something more fashionable
in the city; Any ccoupation which gives them
opportunity to reside in the townie preferable
to that of , farming. Law and Phyzio are vary popular ocoupations'-r-a elerkship la always desi
rable, and our farmer youth In suddenly none
' formed into a citizen—learns how to smoke
cigars, mouth an oath, twirl a rattan, and rt
a dirty looking moustache. With the foo spo lish
young girls, he becomes just the Zippy --and
1 worries the heads of the ansions mamas more
than ague or fever. One would not suppose
1 that any of the youthful gentry that form
[ this chum of the community had ever peen •
plough-zhare, swung an are, or ate corn dodgers
and buckwheat flapjacks.
We are not disposed to satirize, bat the grow.
I log aversion to agricultural pursuits le as cuter
useate for the country as for the young men
who have been brought tap to follow; and have
forsaken them. Heretofore our system* of W-
I elation have been defective upon this subject
— and the time has been, when en education

that farmers must and 'will kern from the
present crisis in the market, that their occupa

if at the present time we had in our - coon

twice the quantity of products that We'heve

cultivation, it would not more than supply the
demand for bread, which now presses upon us
from all gaugers. if we could supply the for

better for all chases of the community, The

work claims which no others would. They make
