The American C tlea—What the Iteemblt.
cas9 Stanld Da.
The Convention of the American party which
was bald RI this City on Wednesday and Thurs
day, adjourned out. die-on Thtirsday night, after
a pleasant but anfmated union. The Slates in
the North:wort *SO generally represented' and
a very strong doerowas expressed to meet their
Southern brethren " in. a National-Convention,
and 114/M0 upon candidates to be supported for
President - and Vies President of the ' United
States. Av we understand the question, there
is really no vital 'difference of opinion between 1
the North and the South upon the fundamental
question represented by . the American organiza
tion.: lite would there , have been upon other
matters, had not the lait .Congress'repuled the
Missouri Compromise„ and again opened in Its
moat offensive form, the question of Slavery Ex
tension. As the matter now' Muds, the North
ern members of the American party cannot with
safety to their partj, respect for themselvee, or
regard for principle, wink out of eight thisgroat
question. It Rate that must be met. Romeo
up on every occasion, aril will not down at the
bidding of a few men. The people of the North
have bad. no hand in main the Mimed.'
Compromise. •It was forospo them by Pres
idential aspirants, and pad.' us who were
ready and anxious to be subsi '.ed. This is a
live question, one that must . set, and the
Convention of the American p which has
just adjourned, have met the qu tionin study
form, and yet a conciliatory . After a
long, able and interesting debate they have, -as
we understand the matter, adop . with great
unanimity a proposition, to be . Mitted to their
Southern brethren, which, if ad.. ted by them,
will cause hermony and produce • • ty of action.
This proposition la, In subitanoe, that the South
shall-agree to arsatoration of th Missouri Como
promise. They ask for nothing , tis new and
untried; but demand a rester:did: of the national
guarantees given to the Free 8 tee more than'

We are given to understand the

platform is concerned. If the nth rejeobilt,' ,
then we may expect n. fad - di ' • pilau of the
Whole party, and the formation of a new party.
We cannot with any diggreit of certainty Infer
what the South will do in'theipremlses. They may
may'adopt it, and they may reject It; if they re
ject it there will be an end tom National Andean
Organization. Woken that some gentlemen
were present at the :thmmtion from the neigh
boring State of Kentucky, and' they - admitted
that thedemand made by tho northern delegates
was a fare and proper demand, and upraised
the opinion that the southern Aetna would' be ,
willing to grant it.
The convention of the American party to nom!-'
nate for President and Vice-President, will as
semble in Philadelphia on the 224 of February
next, and before going into the matter of ballot
ing, the alternative of the Northern members

thePresiden College. The Northern States
therefore ha e the power in their hands, aid
unless they be-betrayed by a dough-fsoe
minority, the have really nothing to fear.
The great int, however, in the whole gams
is the eleotio of a President and Vice President
of the United States. It is an easy matter for
delegates to meet is convention and make
speeches and latforne,andnominato ceulidates.
It is, howevwn, not so easy ei matter to have the
speeches and platforms adopted by the people,.
and the candidates elected to the offices for
which they have been named. The American
party as it standee-day is a -powerful political
element, but et it not strong enough unaided to
elect a Present and Vice President' The sup -'1
port of the cuticle independent men, the • men
who oppose and have all their line opposed the
Democratic party, is necessary to elect the oat'
dilates of the American party. note ,rung are
noto in a yreot mature enrolled islkV 'ionhe of
the Repnblican party, and ecken they can be
brought into theaupportof Me Anecrieancandidote;
they cannot be hatted- Nothing in the fitter* ii
neoricertain Man ,this:
We hold therefore, that the Republican party;
should hold a National Convention in Philadez
phis, on the 224 of Febrnary, the same time
that the American party bold their Convention,
and sot as oirtnestauces will prove to be best.
If the South reject the Northern ultimatum,
adopted by the Convention which met here this
week, the Northern members wilt retire-from the
Convention, and' -have nothing more to do vitt
It. The time will then come for do Northern
States to either maintain a defiant, • yet digni
fied position, or to bow sub..' ..Ovely to the
yoke,. pinion their arms, and put a planter
upon their mouths.
As we have before stated, we place more re
liance upon having the eight kind hf men for
candidates than we do in platforms. )Ye do:
not intend- to borrow any trouble as' to the ,
course the Philadelphia convention may pursue.
We hope that the members will harmonize and
Quite, but we do mean to say that in order • to ,

If otir grurpoae is tonohleve a victory,, then the
opposition mustinee, there mettle harmony, no
third ticket must be' run,' especially In the free
States. In order that a perfect understanding
may be had and a thorough union, formed, we
would suggest that a National Republican Con
vention, be held In Philadelphia, on the same day
that haa been selected by the American party on
which to hold their curtution '
namely the 22d
of gobruary, the anniversary of the birth-day
of George Washington.

Tue Ca/1511112 RiVoFriloa—Rew. Mr. Roberts,
1 Anierioan'' , Mieeionary to China, who is now on a
'-nisi? to this contry, Writes an_ interesting letter
to the New York Journal of Commerce in regard
to the revolution in'China. Of the Courts of the
reigning and rebel eniperors, he says: '
, "This (the Cinrt of Peking) consists of aix
1 Boards of Control and the Emperor, who *helm
over all, and a vast number of officers, governors
1 and other officer" under his special appointment.
• In its nature this government is patriarchal, the
EMperor being considered the father of the na
tio; and each officer as the father of the people
under hie control. The new Court of Nanking' Is
different, consisting of six kinp, denominated
the Winger the North and the King of the iketh
thelling of the East and the Kingof the West,
the Assisting King, and Tee —ping Wang him
mit. Thii iis his title, which, translated Into
English, means the rmg of Peace. While the
other kings constitute the structure of the court,
the latter caps the climax, and hence legitimate
ly becomes the acknowledged head over ull; but
, rather indfraternal eons; esteeming the other
kings ecl - with himself, and calling them breth
reni his court, therefore, so fares developed,
Is oxen ly a royal fraternity."
• These Kings all concur In destroying idols, in
, obeying the Ten Commandments, and En worship
1 ing • tfie one true and living God—Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit—though with , some errors, for
the want of instruction. They have published
the Scriptures—Dr. Gintzlaff's version—without
note or comment, and are reported to have ad
dopted them as their text book to their schools
They invited Mr. Roberts to the capital to in
struot them More fully in - the Christian religion,
and he attempted' t o go, but was stopped by the
blockade of Imperinlista. On his return to
China, which will occur soon,. Mr, Roberta In
tends to renew his efforts to rim% Nanking.—
Tart-p Wang was at Canton with him for. two
months 1847, learning that first principles of
Christianity,
Of their political career, the writer remarks
it le timely wonderful, "They came up from
among , people simply as common citizens,
without y pretensions to noble blood. Similar
to EDI' ~
'..cloud, no bigger than • a man's hand,
they ha e .Inereasei, multiplied and spread,
until the. whole Chinese heavens and beclouded
by their influence: But after this ' cruel war,
Mr. Roberts expects greater. things than hue
yet occurred, He attribute" the present agita
tion to the breaking up by the English war of
the sluggish clans which existed in China twenty
years ago. It was through the Instrumentality
that China has been opened, the gospel preached
commerce enlarged, and the nation benefited.
Of the prospects of the rebellion, and what
'will be Its results, if successful, Mr. Roberts says:
- 1. Nat are the prospects of its coccus! As to
the boat premises we now can lay down, we are
under the necessity of reasoning ourselves to the
conclusion from general principles. EOM* as
Tailing Wang andhis party came up from noth-
Mg to their present elevation when the Impe—
rial treasury and forces were in full strength, un
exhausted, how much more may we reasonably
expect them now to advance Ati , eocummmatbori
when the old government is growing weaker, and
her recant= diminishing daily? Again the Whole
country is tall of local rebellions; these, though
not directly connected with Jae-ping Wang, yet
affiliate in their predilections, and intend to unite
with him When opportunity offers. as they , all
hive rebelled against the same Emperor, they all
sympathise with each other, and look to Tae-ping
Wang as the King over them all. Hen cm all lo
cal rebellions, (and the country is full of them,)
are naturally weakening the Imperial govern
ment, and causing the new dynasty to become
comparitively stronger. Bat this is not the
strength of the argument on which we depot-a—
-t/rat is in the will of God, who put"; down one
King and puts Up another at his Olin pleasner.
If he wills that Tae-ping Wang and his party
shall conquer, they will conquer, and not with
out. This ham been their owh conclusion, and
meet be the.concluaion stall who look sob erly at
the matter,
and Anly consider the unlikely mea
ltime of bre aking down idols, as the means by
which they commenced, have made program,
and advanoed to. their present position. We
hope and believe to.,
will succeed.
2 /f it succeed', what mill he the probable ?souks?
Most likely an enlargement of intercourse with
other nations, and especially the United States,
and of ' commerce—it diffusion of science and
modern int rovements among them—a universal
eh nags o religion throughout the, nation—the
proniulgrd on of the Gospel and the salvation of
their souls
Mr. B obob rts says that readers in this country
are often led in relation to the Chinese revolu
tion for want of discrimination between the
general mdrement andlocal rebellions; the former
may be advancing. while the latex ars ov ertagbe
anddispersed. Different opinions in regard to the
revolution also exist among...foreigners in Chin;
and-therefore allowance must be made for those
who write in opposition. He earnestly retreats
that foreign nations may keep neutral, and take
no part against the revolutionists.
Tau Fauna COUNTT RiatiLATolis.— Last

Parkville in "this State, whose early Gomm lion

Park had never been suspected of Abolitionism

the agency of his paper; to Induce the free Stets
