Although this is much less than it should have been, itis a evil deal nadir tie eircitinetances. Being the new and the week party, and the impression being riveted on the public mind that the contest lay between the Democrats and the Know Noth ings, the Republican pasty suffered loss both ways. There is' no doubt that at least fifteen hundred old line Whigs, who preferred the Re pnbliran to the other parties, voted slimily for the Democrats, from the intense desire eo defeat the Know Nothings. On the other hand, there were hundreds of persons friendly to the Repub lican party, and anxious for its success, who voted direct for the Know Nothings to defeat the liquor men, who had adopted the Democratic ticket.— Thus the Republican ticket, although command ing the good wishes and friendly regards of the voters, lost the majority of its strength from the prevailing itnpression est it had no chance, and from. the intense desire to defeat the Know Nothing ticket by some of its friends, and to de feat the liquor league by others. Wo do not think it Is wide at the mark to my, that at least three thousand persons voted for the Democrats and Know Nothings for the ahoy, stated rea sons, who really preferred the Republican prin ciples- and „ticket, and would hero voted for it bad theyhelieved it tad a chance of success. EhlAlaroN's RECEPTION AT LAREINCIL— WO stated In the last number of the Herald of Freedom, that Governor Shannon had passed this place the day previous, and had gone to Lecomp ton, not condescending to call at Lawrence, the oldest and most important eettlement in the ter ritory, as well as the most populous. By some means it was reported that the Governor would return on Saturday, and pays visit on his return trip to the Shawnee Mission, where It is under stood, his headquarters are established. The people were determined on giving him a public reception, and appointed a committee of fifteen to make necessary arrangements. In the afternoon, the man from the country began to assemble, and by evening there was a very large collection in our streetr, waiting with anxiety the Govemor'sarrival. About 4 o'clock, P. fil., it was reported he had arrived, The crowd made their way to the Cincinnati Rowe, where he stopped, to extend to him an enthusias tio greeting,' each ow determined to do hie best towards making the Governor feel himself at home while in Lawrence. The Committee. wltlialon. J. li. Lane as chairman, called upon thOlovarnor at his room. The committee were seversidy introduced by Mr. Lane, who was an associate of Gov. Shannon's in Congress. After the ceremonial* the Colonel informed the Governor of the object of the visit, and the desire of the people to addrese him, and to listen to a response from his Ex cellency. The Governor replied that "dream , stances had placed it out of his power to com ply with the request." Col. L. mewed him that the entire time con sulted - would embrace but a few minutes; that as the Governor had expressed a desire to go to Franklin, three miles distant, that night, if hie party desired they might") on, and he, the Colo! nel—would carry him down in his own carriage that evening, or in' time ,to regain his party in .the morning, if herpreferred.- Oar, Shannon peremptorily declined the honor, but'premised to return on the =dor-October, -whim be should visit Lecompton again, on the occasion of a sale of thy lots. Many felt indignant that the Gov ernor should refuse this mark of. honor at their hands. They called 10 recollection the pleasant time they bad a year previous, when Goy. Reed er first called upon them, and accepted a pioneer dinner at their hands, and contrasted the kind neas sad urbanity of one with the coldness and incivility of the other. As ()unmoor Shannon entered hie canine and craeked his whip to depart, we were pained to observe that seterel persons joined by • few boys, commented groaning rather loudly, which ' was restmdned with great difficulty by the more cool antheedati. Our citizens felt that Governor Shannon had grossly insulted them, u as the pepple of the territory at large, in accepting a putdio demonstration from an adjoining State, and refusing it at the handler thee he was seat to govern; but this was so 'rouse 'for the out rage, and can hardly be offered as • palliation. - Governor &Ninon drove to Franklin that night and on the day , following, Sunday, made his way to the Madan • accompanied' by his honor Reo .
