That David L. Smith was tut winter soignor

That ChriStian Syster voted for Simon

That James K. Moorhead was a candidate

until nominated by the Know Nothings:
That James K. Scott held office as •long as he

That seviral of the candidata on the Know

TUB LAST EFFORT.
We have no inclination on this, the last day of
the campaign, to fill onr columns with staring
capitals, exhorting the faithful to their duty,
and we hope there is no necessity for it. The
readers of our paper are well enough posted up
in the facts sad arguments on which the Re-
I üblican movement le based ; and if these are
of sufficient to rouse them to action, we know
fno appeal potent enough to reach them.
• leave them to their own sense of duty and
ropriety. .
There may be some, however, who are fully
twinned that the Republican cause is right,
that who feel somewhat Indifferent concerning it,
use they think it may not encased. To such
We have only to say that its success is in the
Lands of its friends; they have but to rally
everywhere to its support to make It triumphant.
At any rats, whether successful or not, every
vote given for it to-day is a enbateatial token of
approval to its principles which no real friend
can afford to withhold.
Thaw is another ales, we trust it is not large,
who wish to vote our ticket but, have such • ha
tred to one or other of the opposing tickets as
to be tempted Into voting with the one most
likely to defeat the object of their hate. Under

men would vote the Republican ticket ; and we
hope that mere prejudice will not be able to se

The future success of the Republican move-

Let every true friend, therefore, turn out to the 1

The following article from the Dispatch was
written by a gentlemen well tmow►n to us u one
of the old Guard of Temperance in this county.
Years ago he •se a' most efficient member of
"the Waehingten Temperance Society, and from
then till now has continued to be one of the moat
reliable and efficient Temperance men among no.
Let the friends of the cause read his views and
pause before they vote for either of the candi
dates supported by the opponents of the Tem
perance cause.
Tinntamon Mu or Amsonmer Courrre—
You are urgently appealed to now, by individuals
of the Know Nothing candidates, to vote for
their whole ticket, on the Temperance question.
Remember that the candidates on that ticket
have given no pledge to sustain the. new license
law—that the party, in presenting its nominees,
did not recognise temperance ass pending ques
tion—that DA Oven one of the Legislative OM
dilates has given any public pledge to sustain
the law—that it has been repeatedly charged,
and not denied, that Mr. Flanegin, the candi
, date for Senate, was pushed forward with 'the
expectation that he would secure the support of
the Liquor Leage. Then would not temper
-50100 men stulti fy themselves by toting for that
ticket on Temperance grounds ?
What can you hope to achieve by sustaining
the half dozen unpledged candidates of the
Know Nothing party in Allegheny county, while
the party, as a State organization, has offered
no endorsement of temperance, and its condi
' dates in other counties of the State, where tem
perance is not popular, do not even pretend to
be temperance me? Will you vote for F. C.
Flanegin, a man charged to have been nomina
-1 ted to secure the vote of. the Liquor Dealers'
League, of Allegheny County, to defeat Edward
D. Gazzam, who has never sought the support
of that League, who is personally temperate.
unquestionably qualified, and reliable as a ,
sup
porter of all measures and laws tending to pro
mote the cause of public order, virtue andmoral
ity, and to resist the aggressions of the Slave
Power?
Shall your votes be thrown away upon the
Know Nothing ticket, which is notoriously des
tined to defeat at this eleetiou—which is making
hot a dying struggle for the election of its can
didates in this and a few other counties of Penn
sylvania, while all over the free States elsewhere,
it is virtnally extinct as a party, bending before
the overwhelming storm of Republicanism?
Doyou know—can you possibly have forgot
ten—that a "crisis" is always found, at every
election, in which the Manhood and Republican
ism of the Free States is asked and too often
persuaded to surrender its prinaiples audits can
didatesfor "Temperance" or "the Union." That
thus Slavery always divides, and always con
quers.
Do you not know that if you desert your
principles now—if you meanly leareyour oandi
dates--the best ticket ever nominated In Alle
gheny county—to defeat and • disgraceful mi
nority of the popular vote—you will have deeply
and shamefully wronged them and those voters
who remain faithful to them ? Do you not know
that the same appeals will be made and the
tame necessity exist for your betrayal of your
own candidates and allies next year and the year
after, to prevent anti-Temperance legislation
Do you not know that if you, as temperance
men, desert the cause of Fresdem to support the
emendates of a party which bison/44y declared
In its Pennsylvenis platformtheit'the question of
Slavery "was not intended tobe embraced within
its principles andobjects," and `!should not be
introduced," that others among us, not agreeing
in opinion with you on the paramount duty of
throwing away votes on those who have sacrificed
such men of foreign birth estimator Darsle, and
all not native eitisenthat many of our truest
Republicans, will feel justified In sustaining the
Lembo° ea/Latham "this once" to rebuke their
enemies!
Support the Republican ticket, then, faithfully,
zealously and hopefully—can back-all who hare
wandered from our make to defeat Know Noth
ings on the one band, or to aid temperance on the
other. Ile ashamed to be counted among the
ranks of the miserable spurious Democracy—
the alai of Slavery and Rum—and equally
scorn to be counted among those who have so
loudly demanded your votes as temperance and
anti slavery men, for • party not officially
pledged to oppose either slavery or rum.
