Jfz Mitor :—At the lest Democratic meeting
held ih our borough, it wee announced from the
stand that there wmildbe s debate between a Mr.
Glass, of Allegheny, and aJ. W. Mcilleland, of
Beaver county, on Friday evening, the 6th, on
the relative merits of Know Nothing prinolples
and Democracy. On Thursday and Friday there
were posted on all the prominent places in the
. neighborhood darning hand-bills, calling a muss
meet!' for the gnaw Nothings, the meeting to
be seed by Dr. G. L. McCook, and other
gobbed speakers. The long looked for
nigh arrived, and with all the efforts to draw
nP is to their dying cause; they mumeeded
in getting ant' twenty.eix persons, inoludipg
boys and men. The young Doctor was there,
ready with his speech, and with the exception
of Its not being well committed, I beard one
say he "done right down 'good." lie convinced
'all present, no doubt, that he was Dr. McCook,
from Pittsburgh. Ns argued seriously and with
all Lie ablilty to convince the Samar that their
country was in danger from the foreigners that
were planting ihemselyea on our "soil. As an
example, he called our attention to the Ital
burs. thronging our highways with " dough
troughs " on their beads, vending images and
fruit*: "Yes, gentlemen, that is not all,"(at
this stage of the speech the bristles of the dig-.
aided and unterrided were ell on end ; it would
not have been eats fora poor Italian to have
made his appearance—bis crockery-ware would
have been no where.) "Yes, gentlemen, that is
not all: our Christianity Is in danger. The
quality of the immigration from Europe is not
as good as it was ten or fifteen years from age,
[when my brother-In.law came here.] Who doe?
not know that every German, yes, and every
Red Republican from France is strongly, tainted
with Infidelity ?" Well, this was a serious place
In the speech, and they seemed very grave. It
did net affect toe so, for I had heard and road of
such expounders of the Christian religion be;.
fore.
I thought perhaps It would not be unprofitable
to scan over the ticket a little that these Inlidel
haters bare put before the people for their suf
frage.
They y
had
it will not stand the
test. had better beware of Infidelitr in
their own camp. But the Doctor Mopped to give
way for other speakers,- They celled for Mr.
M'Clelland, but that gentletnau got up and asked
to be excused, u he had prepared himself for
debate with anotherperson. Well, poor fellow;
he did-not look able, physics/1y or mentally, for
the Doctor. They called for simnel other quak
er; but no one responded. Al last they called
for the Doctor again, but they forgot that he had
said his say—bad delivered his written speech,
and was dons. The President eald he .4 would
like right well to hear the Doctor a little while
Mager,* but it was no go. Terre vs. as more
ponder in Ma Nora. The President asked some
one to move to adjourn. To his great - rdief
some one did,"and thus ended the wonderful dent
