We hear of men here, auk there, in town and • txruntry,:irho expreee • strong desire to vote the —Republican ticket, because It is devoted to the right principle; "but," they soy, "it has no chance,-' '; And why has it no amnia, pray? If all ite friends abandon it, of coats° it has no chance; but If all those who profess to desire its oleo " lion, vote for it, it has a chance, and a most splendid one. - • A The way to make a thing succeed is to take hold and help it ; but to hesitate, doubt and f.alter is merely to objet it of its chances. -Let us see, now, what the prospects of our .liclutt are. We liellllMie, then, that it starts even • In the race with the Democratic ticket. Last year the distinctive Whig vote and the Demo °ratio vote was about the same-=say 4600; and we'know of nothing that has occurred to champ the relative strength if those parties. If Whi gs \ have since joined the Know Nothings so have democrats; and it will doubtless be found that the defoo tiiion the latter side Is greater than on the former. With the bulk of the Whig vote in the Repub. limn mudut„.tre started, then, with as much vet lug strength; as the democrats; and since the nominations of both have. been made, 'we hive profited by every political contingency that has arisen, while they have lost. Judging by all the rules of common sense, and drawing only such inferences ae are inevitable, the Republican par ' ty ought ttun day to be the strongest party in the For it is notorious that the democratic party Is far from being either united or enthusiastic. The old factional feeling is stall quietly at work, and there ire large classes of the party of whose protible course the leaders have no knowledge. Tqndljthe old dentocartbsenis 11 an impossibility. isideilreeentclratinstationi;ina although there areiliome Whip who feel inclined to- vote the dellocratic ticket, because they think its don : • ole Melina; itis not bard for the observant to see that the old 'democratic spirit is not at work, in . , any.quarter. The /harken Misty, is every one brow% is almost helplessly &sheeted. The trouble does not appear on the surface, but its existence is undeniable. We are told by those who know that dies. are the Sourced disaffected ~Amerim ane' in thitounty, who will not vote the tick et of the party; and this we think is rather under thee over Si mark. Now, the Republican party gains by all this ditiffectiao in both parties. It is Jost in a po sition to profit by such things, because men of all parties feel that the Rapublicap party Is right and that they ought to be in its make; and erg alai that serves to wean them from their feomer party attachments, opens up the way for their enthuses infLaur party. From thu's due of men, in both patties, we hare no doubt that the Republican ticket receive a very heavy vote. There is another matter to be home in mind. The men who intend to out their vote for our - -ticket are not the noisy, bracling class. They ..doMot prociabri their purposes at the street °arisen, nor make a parade of their latentlons. They, are . gniet, . respectable, worthy men, not given to political display; and lamer gamy have judged that; became the Repthilean movement has hid to little of the usual parade, it can have - no strength: Let them not so deceive themselves. The enderchheit, still, but steady and powerful, is bearing . along the Republican cause, silently; bet thnedily and surely. lie wbo, hnta this feet lean his eyes but deludes Tr , tharefoie, all political signs be not false; if ..31Indkationa of public sentiment be not utter *delusive; if men end things are to be Judged by former standards; then, we say the Republi can ticket has a chance, andm good chariot; and it teminbut the united vote of these:who pro fess to wish ft - well mimisure its triumphant election. • ' ' • THIS LAST wake. .This is the lark oppottcmity we shall bare of teaching.enr weekly readers ; and we arail oer selhs'of the opportunity to urge them not to forget the high duty they owe to their Principles and profesekrns in thecootie' g election. There Were in Allegheny county last year over four thousand Whip . who had not bowed the knee to Baal. It may be that some of these have sins been; tempted from . their integrity; but the great mass of them, we feel assured, stand firm In resistance to the appeals with which they hare been .plied to foreakelheir old principles. What shall these four thousand, Wares do ? They cannot with any regard to their principles and corufisteney, vote the Democratic ticket—. Some few individuals among them may bring themselves to that; but the Whip of Allegheny county have fought the enemy too long, and know:id* too well, to descend, even in the hour of ritrouti, id. to hie embrace. fro; that is clearly oat of the question. • Nor can they vote the Know Nothing ticket with any more propriety. A ticket composed of renegades from all parties, with no bond in com mon but that of bluer proscription and the love of publio plunder, and possessing none of the needed requisites for off co and public con fidence, is not a ticket for the honest Whip of this county to support. The men who have fought openly for so many years, and dealt . their ble' without hiding- their fans, are not to be won, now, Into secret modes of warfare, nor to abandon the broad field of contest to sneak into by-ways and fight under cover.— The men who took pleasure last fall in voting for George Dards can hardly deem it their duty now to unite with those who proecolbed him for no fault but that of his birth. There remains, then, but these alternatives either to vote the Republican ticket, or stay at home. Which will they . The Whig County Committee, at its IPOSSiOII in this city on the 22nd of August last, adopted the following resolutions with great unanimity: Resolved, That the Whigs of Allegheny coun ty, by their representatives here assembled, do most earnestly reiterate • the sentiments unani mously adopted at our last comity convention, to wit —That we will maintain and defend the true purpose of our National compact, but that we will have no more ourprombsee with slavery; that we will resist the introduction of slavery into Kenna and Nebrealxr any other Free Tertitory; that we will the admission of any more elan States into this Union; and that in view of the dieters - of the crisis--e crisis overriding . all former party distinctions—we hereby pledge ourselves aa soldiers In the camp of freedom, fry the whole war, and inscribe on our banner, Free Men, Free Labor and Free Soil. Rastas* That in order to carry out the spirit of these sentiments successfully, we hereby moat cordially recommend to our constituents, the Whip of Allegheny comity, to imitate the patri otic example of their Whig. brethren of other States *ad counties, by uniting with their fel low eitisena of ail parties who hold .similar sen timents with retard to the importance-of politi cal union in one general Republican 'organba tioc, having for its object anunyieldingressatance to the further aggreedens of slavery. This is not mandatory; no Whig le feud to obeylt: but the recommendation of each a body ought to have great weight. Batit is a ream. mendationerhich_luts other weight than its dire , ' Rim. loillu Jiidnati, one of the leading Whigs of Maseaciiturette; in a letter accepting the Ra. pumas notalladien for Governor sap: During 124 year, in the Senate, a petition for the tepeal afdlelfligitiee Sieve law, subscri bed by some iltlmiU thousand men of Mara checatts of Boston and its vicinity, was intrestecito sr cue. A discussion ensued. At that time, as at others, the fact was ammo oath: Senators who had been elected aa Whip, and other louts hare furnished indubitable est. , dente of its truth, that the Whig party had ceased to exist as a national party. We have watched with great interest the effect of the revival of the prospects of the Dem ocratic party, to see whether tho resuscitation of that party, upon so distinct pro-Shivery ground would not revive as a national party its former antagonists, and establish it upon the basis of freedom, asdihna enable It to bunko truck new strength aa would make it successful. It seems no longer possible to entertain such an idea.— And yet it cannot be d impossible th at in some way the majority o the people of the country may unite in reels effectua ll y th e our s aggression of the slavery interest. Recognising, therefore .. th!Lparamount bane," I recognise as the only practicable menu of sus taining our position as Whip upon that issue, our co-operation with the muses of our friends in other States in the formation of the Republi can Party of the Union. , In this position Mn Rockwell will be sustained bythe great body of the Whigs of Massachusetts; and in doing eo they wDt be but following the example set by their breams in Maine, Ver mont, New Hampshire and the other New Eng land states. The gallant Whigs of New York, those who have stood by the party in fortune and mister- Mme, through vied and through evil report, have jut merged theineehMe in .the Bepublioan party and become hearty workers' in its ranks ; and where they lead may not the Whigs of Penn sylvania follow? There is not, now, in any Northern state (nor in any Southern state, for that matter) a - dis tinotive Whig party. In all the Free states out of Penimilvardathe Whigs have united cordially in the Republican movement. And it - is meet that they , should. They hare always been the opponents of Slavery aggression, slimys willing to unite with others In putting a stop to the spread of Slavery; and now that that question has come to be the-predominant one, bow can they eseapetrom faithfully rallying to the sipport of a principle to width they are pledged by their pnTious political action? In this county there la, bia#dee, an especial reason for this co-operation with the Republican party, in the fact that the latter is in some meas ure the offspring of the Whig party. The plat form adopted by the Whig Convention hurt year was the plattorm of the Republicans, aud the Repaint= organisation hall natarally flowed from it. The adoption of that.plattorm was, In fact, the first catabliihment of the Republican party. In coming, now, into the Republican ranks, the Whip of the =any but stand where they did LP year, and fight with the same weapons, for the same purposes. To them, therefore, we look for a hearty co , . operation in support of tho . Republican ticket.— It, is a ticket In army way deserving of thrlr support--oomposed of boned, capable and worthy men, fairly chosen:, and without taint of mispicion. It ought to be a pleasure to rote foi such manioc we doubt notlt wiR be; and if th e earnest, 'boars and hones _Whigs of the county , contribute enough aid to sleet them, as it is in their PoWer to do„ they will hare •Mcish More abundant cause to be thankful than theylill herein contanting to their defeat. We l o ok, therefore, with . confidence tp 44 united action in behalf of ihe Republioan ticket and a henty co-opeatka, on their • part, With' their Whig brethren throughout the north, who hare almost to a man given in their adhesion to the Republican minement. . • -' Otuo.—We have many imbeoribene be Ohio, and to•day'a edition of our weekly paper Is the lest that will resale them before the eleatlon.-;.
