THE MeKERSPORT DEMocizatlo MEET;b
IRO-TRUE VERSION. !-
To viol EDITORS ON 2.111 DAISY - PITTIIIIMIOB
GAZIIIII-4300t1061041-40 your daily Issue of
the 25th ina., the following piece of intelligence
is noted:—'l We are informed that at the Dea
oared° meeting at McKeesport on Saturday, a
motion was put that Rey Nathaniel West D. D.
open the meeting with prayer, and the motion
was Toted down ! - Mr. West afterwards mode
a speech in 'which - he declaimed in an excited'
Manner against the American party." I repli
to the above by giving you the Mu version df
the affair,: and hope the other city papers will do
me the favor to copy. And
1: I was invited to attend the meeting, Etna
was assured that the invitation was to open the
proceedings with prayer and that In accordance
with the expressed wishes of the Hoo. Judge
Wilkins, and .en ral other, influential citizens.
The venerable ge Semen whci invited me, was
elected to pintail namely, COl. Jeese Bill.
2. I didatten The meeting convened in the
Market House. he President stated that the
wishes of seven gentlemen bad been stated to
have the metal g opened with Prayer.- I had
been previoualy told to go on the platform. I
did so. Whether prayer should be offered or
not, assumedthe form of a motion. The motion
wee put twice. and carried clearly in the, /Ora
aline. The most that could be counted in the
negative were four voices. Two of these voices
were loud and resolute. The voices in the &farm:-
alive were numerous, but scattering, and ap
parently reluinant. The President because of
thin reluctance, did not press the matter, and
there was no prayer! This he himself regretted,
and so did many others. However, the oppoe
'don to prayer, created no surprise considering
the quarter it proceeded from. Judge Wilkins
was not on the stand at this part of the pro
/et/ling& He came up when called upon, bet
after some daisy, so far, these are the simple
Lets. ,
As to what I said, all beard iL Nor do I, care
it the whole World &aid it! Three ee'versl
times the people with loud voices Galled upon me
to speak. .The l'reaident announced at the first
call that-I declined making a speech; but at
after-intervals the call was repeated with greater
force, end I bid to say something, and someggig,
I did say. Your infornirea, Mem& Editors, id as
you I was 4 azoiract," and spoke against "the
American party." Asto excitement, It is 'posi
tively untrue, and as to "the American patty,"
I never 0000 named It, or any other party. ~I
spoke against' all oath-bound sera scathes. J

have often done so. I declared tor ooliviation
that they were contrary to the word of God, anti.,
-Republican, and naloonally ruinous'. I declare
this eonvictien , now. I referred to the history
of France during the years 1789-1798. I polar
ad Out the similarity betneari the nerd ebbs of
the French people, and our American ode! ea
dell a, and expressed my fears that the ante (if
the American swot societies would be like the
issue of the French Jacobin clubr -It they were
abandoned. I referred to ihe facts, Gait'
"the earth is the Lord's and the Mau thereofi"
that there is but one human nature; that-God,
our Maker, had a right to fax the bounds of our
habitations where he pleased; that no man could
chop his own parents or the land of his nativi
ty; that Americans amid not help being Ameri
cans, or the
. People of any nation avoid their
rationality, Nero birth. And therefore to pre
scribe' in wholesale citizens of foreign birth,
became they wee so born, was absolutely silly;
positively stenfd I I say so now. - I referred Zo
the duty of prayer fir the nation, and for God's
blessing on all we do for the nation, and stated
that the illustrious Washington, Franklin, arid
others of the founders of the Republic wars not
ashamed of prayer. And I expressed my con
viction t at though &foreigner by birth and edu
cation, as an adopted citizen, if I deported mj.
self aright, I'-was by the Constitution-of the
United States, as valid a citizen as the Hot/.
Amos Waxtss himself! . This Is the sum of
my unpremeditated and desultory remarks, and
the people received them very -well, far better
than I oxpinitAid or deserved, but not far better
than the teethe they- heard deserved. -
First Since the meeting, I have been told that
I en if p.m tplin v Etre—
eipu rule, and orpec. My against popery =carol!.
big the pvernment of this country. i nava
been pointed to my own little book entitled ..the
Ark of God the aafe•guard, of the tuition," and.
to what r hero written In that took. I admit
all thii, and refer those dearous of seeing what.
I hare written' n the subject alluded to to the
dank itself. It Is to be had nt Dayssoses beck
atm*, Market street, Pittsburgh, and I hips
those who may read it win feet when done that
they did not pay their twenty:five cents in vain.
And further I say, that with all 11111 i heart, soul,
strength, and mind, I have opposed, and do Op
pose all persons under allegiance to any foreign
government, whether that allegiance be civil. or
ecclesiastical, having any part, place, or Mlle
with or under .the 'government of these United
States, and especially do I oppose any, the lout,.
interference with the government of this country
or with its institutions by. the Pope'of Some, his
emistall, or any other emissaries of any for
eign power. This is all plain, and nothing sow
for me to write.
Second. And while I thus declare, I eLso assert
my =Medea that all send societies, all oath
blind night4onventiclas and disguised club
meetings, are Itu.safe and unnecessary. I believe
all nth oaths to be profane, and all. such meet.
inp to bi twilight with mischief to the family,
to the church, and to the nation. That festal
themee recorded to Acts, =l4l, when we find
that ..110141' then , forty' nittir ,bound theiasafwe
with an oath" to m urder the apostle Paul, might
to be enflielent to deter any one who fears God
or retard, man, fromuniting with sayers/184th-,
bound conclave. . •
Infuse, I &not believe than are any ogee:d
iadem of Society ordained of God for the gov
ernment of thle world but tine. These °email
satkes are the family, the church of God, and
the nation. These three ire clearly revealed as
divinely ordained, sad all the good a min is
bound to, do, ha can accomplish through the
agency of them three - channels. If therefore,
there ,be any necessity for taking "an oath for
sonfirniatiotf," and to pot "an end to all etrife,"
(118 b. vL 16.) it iv evident, it must be taken by
order, and in presence . of the proper authority

REPUBLICAN mEerrertie.
A numerous meeting of Republicans was held
at M cKeesport at Saturday evening. 29th Sept.
D. E. D. Gazzam delivered an address on the
political Utiles IDS:rived 'in the present contest.
He demonstrated theneoesaity of a union of the
citizens of the north to sustain Freedom and the
Gonstitntion again& the Skive power. The
sontlValways presented an unbroken front on
the question of Slavery. Dr. G. showed the sub
serviency and compromising. betrayal of liberty
by those political.parties in the north who placed
aide issues and minor principles on their politi
cal platforms. In the Li:piece party many in
dividial Democrats were anti-Slavery to semi.
AM{ but by their actions and by their votes
they sustained a party that was Intensely pro-
Slavery.
The Whig , party of the north had professed
anti-Slavery principles; but to secure some tem
porary advantage or the success of some secon
dary principle or the nomination of some favorite
candidate, men trusted by -the Whigs had com
promised away the Interests of Freedom and the
rights of the north. And jriet so. Monet be with
the Know Nothings or Atherican party. They
too had their side issues and secondary princi
ples: hence in their national organization they
too have bowed the knee to the dark spirit of
Slavery. While attempting to curtail therights
of others, the Know Nothings were compelled to
yield to the south their own rights. One wrong
begets another—and one departure from thejust
principles of the patriot sires of the Republic
leads to another. If the Know Nothing, were,
-.(se in this County they pretended to be,) as good
anti-Slavery men as the Republicans, they ought
at this crisis to have put on their platform no
side issues, but only the one great and pin
mount principle of opposition to the aggressions
of Slavery: Theyeronld not then have been
troubled in their noleventions with southern del
egates, nor would they have been conquered,
cheated or bought by tee 'sleeve power. lint in
their efforts to curtail the privileges of their
neighbors of Foreign birth..the northern - Know
Nothings surrendered their own rights and were
over-ruled in . their convention by the oligarchs
of the south who oompeSedthem to grant to the
southern States en undue representation In the
Grand Connell, and then forced on them an ultra
pro.Siavery platform. At the Reading conven
tion they tried to.repudiate this, but dared even
there to do so only in fart, and that in a lame
and halting manner. Yet to this State platform
they refer as a proof of their anti-Slavery senti
ments; but there Is more real danger to the
sett-Slavery - muse from such platforms than
from the pro-Slavery doctrines of the Democrats;
more danger from the treason of false friends
than the power of open enemies. The urns
_Alone of the Federal Judiciary and the pre-Slis
very subserviency of our own Supreme 'Court
hid now reused the indignation of the people.—
The Republican itarty, by nominating Passmone
Williamson, had appealed from the injustiee of
the Bench, and the appeal ought to be , sustain:.
ed. During the dellyery of. Dr. Guam's speech
audit its close, the meeting gave repeated irei•
dace of their hearty'approval of the speaker's
sentiments. Mr. Fleeson, editor of the DAIWA,
then addressed the meeting in • powerful speech,
in Which he developed the tedious conduct and
dangerous prinaiples of secret political parties,
and particularly those of the Know Nothing
party. Mr. Flamm avowed himself an advocate
of temperanee and eloquently appealed to friends •
of that muse not tweets maims it In the present •
campaign. Candidates, who by letters end
pledges opposed the efforts of the friends of tem
perance, were to be avoided ; but those who oaf-
tied "liquor on One shoulder and cold water on
the other" to secure. ?arty nominations were
equally unworthy of the °oedema and support
of temperance men. Mr. Fleeson's speech was
listened to with - earnest attention and frequently.
