If all that is claimed of the superior condition I
of Philadelphia--the well-being of the mechani
cal and laboring classes; the admirable laws ra
wading the purchase of land; the immense and
ever-increasing manufacturing industries vivi
fied by the coal, iron, and water-power of the
interior; the clam social atmosphere, so favorable
to scientific investigation end achievement; the
hereditarily celebrated bar and schools of medi
cine if all these are as claimed-and we shall
not dispute it- . -then, never was a community
more disgraced in an intellectual point of view
than is Philadelphia at this Instant by her jour
nals, in their course on the great question of hu
man liberty, of which circumstances just now
make her an importent pivot—as much as she
was when the Declaration of Independence was
penned in the old-State House. —N. Y. Tribune.
The Tribune forgets that Philadelphia is be

cam Psarr.—The following are the resolution];
adopted by the Messachusetts Fusion Conven
tion which met at Worcester on the 20th inst.,
and nominated Julius Rockwell, of Pittsfield,
es candidate for Governor:
Resolved—That the increase and advance of
Slavery, the additions to the number of Slave
States, the suocessive triumphs of slavery in the
political contests of the last half century, the
control of slavery over all departments of the
government, the experience of the last few
years in the legislative, executive and judicial
departments, and more especially the repeal of
the Missouri Compromise, have made Slavery
in its national relations and in its relations to
the free Stake, the paramount practical ques
tion in the polities of the country.
Resolossi—That Slavery, all a State institu
tion, is not within our power or responsibility;
but slavery, in its relations to the widen', is the
Concern of every man in the nation; in its rela
tion to the free States, is the concern of every
man in the free Stales.
Resolved—That Massachusetts, the earliest
batik-ground of freedom, gives her heart and
hand to Kamm, the latest buttle-gotind of free
dom.
Resoked--That the repeal of the Missouri Ctim
promise makes every inch of the national domain
• batlegrotind between Freedom and Slavery.—
It makes the admission of every new State a con
' flies between Freedom and Slavery. The issue
thus forced upon us, we accept. It shall be by
, no fault of ours if another slave State is added
to the Union, or any of its territories left open
to the possibility of slavery.
Resolved—That we tender no geographical or
sectional issue; nor will we be deterred from
our duty by the fear of one. The repeal of the
Missouri Compromise has erased the geographi
cal line. Our principles are national and gen
eral. Our spirit is national and liberal. We
seek sympathy and co-operation from all parts
of the land; we look for members and candida
tes from South and North, East and West. Our
principles do not justly lead toe sectional inane.
If the slave power raises one, the fault is theirs,
let the victory be ours.
Rooked-,That we require no conformity of
opinion on other eubjects .of national or State
policy. No man surrendering or qualifying his
opinion on those yuppies; we all recognise the
duty of making the question of Freedom pax ,
amount. To secure unity of action here, we
attempt no unity of opinion elsewhere.
Resolved—That we accept the name of the
REPUBLICAN PARTY, which has been adopt
ed by our friends and fallow-laborers in other
States. We. mute In that party to assert the
great principles far which we contend, and to
carry them to a trinmphat issue.
