reached here late lestnlght with Liverpool dates
to the 18th.

prevailed for forty-nine hours which destroyed

Denniston & Co.'s circular states that the Cot
too market opened with an active speculative
demand and an advance of id@ad, but daring
the past two days the market become dull,
though closing steady. The sales of the week
reached 80,000 bales, branding 24.000 on specu
lation and 4,500 for export. The closing quota
tions were : fair Orleans 7ld ; middling 6 7-16 ;
Upland fair 6i, and middling 60. The stock of
American Cotton in port is 885,000 bales.
Adeiaes from Manchester were more favorable,'
Liverpool, 17th.—Brown & Shipley's air:mini
quotes Flour as dull eta decline of 6d per Dbl.

train from this city for New York was thrown
from the track about eleven o'clock this morn
ing when about a mile from Burlington, N. J.,
and eighteen persons were killed and a much
larger number wounded, some of them fatally
and many severely. The following named per

Ridgway, Mrs. C. M. Barclay, Baron de St.
Andre, French Consul. Edward P. Bacon, Wil
son Kent, Alexander Kelly, John M. Connell,

and a number of others who were slightly wound

The accident occurred while the train was
backing to ► turn•out to mike for the down train
from New York, which was behind time. The
rear oar of the train backing was thrown from
the track, in conserinenoe of laming in collision
with a carriage which attempted to moss the
road; the horses were killed, but the inmates
escaped unhurt.
'Three cars were completely ground to atoms,
the train passing more than its length after the
rear car left the track.
CHICAGO, August 29.—Kansas dates to Mon•
day evening are received. The bill for the elec
tion of all the territorial officers by the present
legislature passed, and the two house. were in
joint session, carrying out the eleetione The
bill presides for the election by the present leg
islature of all local officer', including sheriffs,
constables and assessors, for the nest six years.
The Schooner Knickethooker, Capt. Richards,
capsized off Sheboygan on Sunday at neon; the
'Una was turned bottom up. Capt. Richards
and two of the arew.were drowned; two others
reached shore safely. The Knickerbocker was
owned in ?diluent% and was bound thither with
a cargo of „bark. She is a total loss but is in
eared.
The census for the south division of Chicago,
has been completed; the population amounts to
80,056; the same division in Jose, 1864, was 24,-
893.

arrivals in town is the Hon. Miss Murray, said
to be ex-maid of honor to H. B. M. the queen;

A heavy robbery was reported at the Pollee
office this morning. A Mr. Stewart Spriggs,
agent for a file manufactory in Sheffield, Eng
land, while on his way from the International
Hotel, in Broadway, to Wall street, had $l,BOO
in bank bills abstracted from his coat pocket.
Just as he reached Wall Otreat, his hat was
jostled, and as be removed his band to replace
it, the package was purloined. •
The potato rot la reported as doing much dam
age to the crop at the east end of "Long bland,
but the speculators are exaggerating facts in
order to raise the prices.
