When hisname was brought forward in - the Convention, and that of Dr. Ossiam via likewita mentioned, the latter gentlemen, in a few remarks which did him in finite honor, declined to contest the nomination with Mr. Derek, and bore the highest testimony to his merits sa a man and a public. servant. The Convention then, with the utmost unanimity, ' tendered thenomination to Mr. Derails, and thus testified its high regard for that estimable and useful man. Dr. James Carothers, chairman of the last Whig COunty Committee, moved that Cassias AVIDLY be selected to preside over the Convention. The motion was unanimously tarried, and Mr. Avery assumed the Chair. Mr. Avery remarked: My friends - and gentle men, I thank you for the honor you have con ferred upon me, and ask' your indulgence and forbearance, not having been accustomed to pre side at public meetings.• I feel an unusual into rest In this meeting; or I would not have been here: Its object is of primary importance; and I hope its adroit may be attained.
