Yesterday morning at an early hour, the house
of Henry Maxwell, butcher on James street, Al

system of Allegheny. No blame can rest on the
' Mayor'l police. They are' n duty all day, and
it is absurd to expect them—and there are only
five of themto 'watch the city properly at night.

have determined stall hazards to enter the house
of C. Paulson, on Ridge street. We are tn
formakthat the rascals have. made Ave or six
attempt' and invariably failed. On Siturday
night lest,• they tried 'to "break through and
steal," but were thwarted in the attempt. With
boldness beyond precedent, they chose' a time
on Monday wham all the family were absent, ex
cept a Scotch servant girl, (about eleven o'clock
in the forenoon,) and entered the house by the
back door. The girl sawthem, seised a hatchet,
and dared them to proceed any further at the
peril of their lives, The Scotch blood was up,
but the brazen-Wed villians, thinking they could
overpower her, made several steps forward,
when one of them received a severe blow on the
bresit from the edge of the hatchet in the hands
of the girl. A pretty severe wound was inflict
ed, and the recipient of the blow reeled out of
the door, followed by his terror-stricken com
panions who left the premises in double quick
time. Burglars are naturally, and:of a comm.
qttence, cowards, end., little resolution and
pluck will ghnerally put them to flight. We
hope some or all of this gang may fall into the
bands of the police, who are on a sharp look-out
for them.
