PITTSBURGH GAZETTE.
WEDNESDAY MOILNING,f-AIMUSY'I, 1856.
W tie PRINT this morning the decision of Judge
Kane in the Philadelphia Slave case, commit-
Bog Pasemore Williamson to prison for oontempt
of Court. alleged to have been committed in his
answer .to the writ of Habeas Corpus Serve on.
him at the cult of Mr. Wheeler. Judge. Hane's
decision is the meet -outrageous abuse of:power
that has thus far disgraced the bench of this
country. A Writ of Habeas Corpus was served
on Mr. Williamson to produce the bodies of the
slaves of Mr. Wheeler. Mr. Williamson return.
ed in answer that the bodies were not and.never
had been in his possession or control. That was
the literal truth, and Judge Kane knew it to be
so; yet he pettifogs the ewe in a way as original
as It is mean, and says in effect that - Williamson
had theoretical legal control because he was the
getter-up and adviser of the mob of negroes who
took the slaves sway. And eo, not because be
fails to make'lerwlite, dignified, properi full and
true re to thelerit, not because he: says the
persons were eel within his powereepaesession,
but use he Oda to this negation the four
words, "at any . Wes whativa7" , for. thesis four
words f literal-truth Mr. Williamson hustled
off to ' for contempt of Cont..' We hope
the people will read this decision witi.eare, and,
if they do net finish its Saeliag of
indignation to lbapettilbgging spirit, Its manifest
violation of justice, Its overrunning tallness of
revenge against the defendant we much mistake
the degree of the Independence that IS.eupposed
to residehithe hearts of freemen. e The impose' for
the defendant, conscious thithis elienti. had com
mitted no contempt, declined to say anything on
the motion to punish. Thiel absence of a defense
seems inhere pussled Sand, and he Mistresses ae
much. However, he gratuitously 'utinertekes to
set up a point for the fun.of knocking It down.
He assumes that the defentle might have said the
Degrees were not slaves, being in the Free State
of Pennsylvania. This he upsets by Sayipg that
no statute authorizes forcible abductioit, whether
the abducted parties are slaves or riot. As to
Mr. Williamson's motives, Judge-sine 'offers
nothing except the contemptuous sneer at the
Court of Gov Armours contained in [the 'words
have nothing to do with them [the motives;]
'they may'give him support and comfort before
'an Infinitely higher tribunal. Ido not impugn
'them here." Merciful lane! _
The moment Jadgo Bane had colic:laded the
reading of his decision, the District-Attorney
asked for • commitment, whereupoii Mr. Wil
liamson's council immediately moved that, he
have permission to amend bitmeturn. ! The Judge
rephed that it was too late t'Utat the commit
ment had been granted, and the prisoner was
in the Custody of the Marshal. r
We presume this is not the end or the busi
ness, however. It cannot be possible that so
outrageous a violation of Mr. Willisurion's;rights
can be suffered in silence. If this return is to be
adjudged contempt, then any aturtatitrthieh may
not exactly square, with a Judge's:idea of a
correct return may bring punishment upon the
respondent. If this is to stand as 4, precedent,
it is most dangerous to personalli ierty. The
Ides of ' , contempt" in a respectful And truthful
return, whatever legal and technical errors there
may be in it, is impossible. The' contemptible
feature in this case is the opinion, eno Action of
Judge Kane, and he may yet find that there are
law and justice that wiU reach eject United
States Judges.—N. P. TnZune.

levees, or exhibitions, have been held at doable

sands of people have visited the place since
Monday. As might be expected-; here were
some among the spectators who were skeptical
in regard to the fascination of snakes, and they
scrutinised theperformancai closely , for the pur•
pose of detecting how much sympathy, if any,
existed, between the child width*, snake. That
there wan and Is but very little, mix readers may
infer when we inform them that the child, from
the commencement of the exhibitions, has
evinced a decided repugnance to the snake, even
refusing to touch it until comm i t:dea so-to do

has also manifeeted the greatest reluotance to

disposition was witnessed by a number of per
sons, who remonstrated. with tb father for en
forcing his child to handle th reptile He,
however, explained the matter Ity stating that
the snake had been irritated, and .no farther
notice was taken of the affair.
The exhibition was continued mitli yesterday
afternoon, when a large party of.ladies and gen

snake bad been irritated.
After the girl had been sorThrhat pacified by
promises and threats, the enake wan taken out
again very reluctantly by the 644, end again it
used its fangs, making another. Wta ou upon the

TENORS AND Nlw Irons..—The above important
cities are now brought within: Jetts than thirty

recently shortened more than five hours on the

New "jerkin' the morning triin,. via Philadel

lowing day, now arrive at i Pincintmti;:.on either
of our favorite roulett,'af about 8 P..M. This
line of travel is fast gaining favor with our citi
zens, and a huge nember of those who went East
recently, by way of libnlark and Buffalo, will
doubtless return by way of Philadelphia and
Pittsburgh.' '
Both of the 'roads into Cincinnati, by . Dayton
or Columbus, mike three daily connections each
way with the 'Ohio and Pennsylvania Road at
Crestliee. The same time, with the same cer
tainty of connections, are made by each In going ,
East. In reaching Cinciminq frbm the East, th e
I trains on either route arrive within slew min-,
rites of each other. The piisengers on the Day
ton route have an opportunity of dining on the
way—thoseby tho Columbus route dine after
reaching the' city, which makes the few minutes
difference. ' To those who wish to prooeidim
raediately to Louieville, by the Ohio and Missbs-,
slppi Road, ' whose depot is located within two
minutes' walk' and In sight of the Dayton route
depot, it dotibtless a great convenience to have
dined on'the way.
Passengers by the Columbus route are tooled
in the eastern, while those by the Dayton route
&reloaded in the western part of the city.
It may el truly said of the roads comprising
both routes, their superiors, if equals, in , point
of conetructiottand careful, management, are not
to be found in the United States.—CM. Gazette.
