Gen. Hartley is on his way stoma the country
to Fort Laramie with a force of 4000 troops,
and will be at the Fort by the 20th Inst. The
General is an old and tried field officer, and
probably the beet Indian fighter in the army;
and there is no doubt but he will settle the alf.

•ta. Jourra.—We learn by the Cincinnati COlN
asertiel that although Mr. Joliffe VAR waited upon
at Barnwell, on his recent visit to South Carolina,
by a mob headed by "an ex-Mexican captain,
and a candidate for high Sheriff of the county,"
and orderedio prepare himself forthwith to learn
the State, that, before the threat was caned out,
the. mob were persuaded to desist from their
violence by a lanyerpresent, to whom Mr. Joliffe
bad letters, and who was discovered in the crowd
at the extreme moment. Mr. J. was suffered
to remain without further insult or impediment
to his . affairs. This is quite different from the
first report, and , we rejoice in being able to cor
rect the statement of no great an outrage. As
we understand it, the oorection is made on the
authority of Mr. Joliffe himself:

in writing from New Orleans; says this is a great
mistake, and adds:
At the St. Charles Hotel, list winter at the

would introduce him to their •relatives. lie is
considered here a murderer and an <Kiloton, with
the mark of Cain branded on his brow.

Bth, says:—Two very likely looking mulatto slave
girls, were emancipated yesterday by a jury of
slave- holden, on the application of their owner
who was slim a mulatto; they were also allowed
to. remain in the • State and enjoy their liberty,
upon the toaster giving bond ind severity that
they never Should become a burtheu to the Com
monwealth. This is the first case udder the law
which wan psased,by the last Legislature. Hith
erto, the Legislamre alone bad the power of
emancipation.

Edward . C. Powers of Columbus, Ga., lately
died, tearing $lO,OOO to his natire town of Ben
srdston, Mass., the proceeds of which are to be
applied to the education of :the children of that
town. This is a way these natives of New Eng

heads and hearts.
A man who lives at Cleves, Vermont county,
