It ier asserted that we hare changed our ground since the rise of Snow Nothingism, end that we now look with more feior on the Catholic liierirehy than we did one year or mai ego. Although this impression has been industriously circulated with the manifest inten tion of injuring oar influence, yet we cannot bo ners that any regular and candid reader of oar paper las been misled by each baseless asser tions. Our position in regard to the Catholic question is simply this : Same two or three years ago, in pursuance of a policy adopted at • Provincial • Connoll at Baltimore, there was a manifest change in the tone and demands of the Catholic Priests and newspapers. At that Coattail it was reseived to *arta* two objects, dangerous, as we conestived, to.the liberties and welfare of this country and at war with the spirit of our insti tutions. One of these was the absorbtion of all the ecclesiastical property of the, church into the bands of the Bishops, and the other was to demand a'sluce of the Common School funds for the' support ofitotian Catholic schools. The lest was at War with the genius of our bndle dons and the wales. of the oountry in relation to acquit property, and pest history pointed out Its dangerous abuses. The .!toad aimed a fatal blew. at the Republican institution of Common . School 'education, and, if suoestaful, around have divided our children into little squads attending' sectarian schools, Aere they wouldLmore likely be educated as bigots than trained up with the liberal. and educated_ ideas which should char acterise' the dithers of a government which makes no distinction among its Citizens oi ao (stint of !agleam opinions. It is not accessary, in the Ilse place, for the protection of the institutions end principles smelled; and in the second place tie the wiz to iocresse the danger. By parse- cation, the Catholic citizen is driTen CO stronger attachment to his church, to more obedient sub mission-to the demands of his clergy, and to separs te himself frem, the great mans of bin fel low citizens in hie political and sects' I life, the very worst things which conld.happen ; for the peace and welfare of the country. Our Constitution places all citizens) on a per fect equality. Any sattempt by a political party, or secret political order, to nullify this just and beneficent principle of the Constitution, and to introduce a religions test unknown to the letter and spirit of our laws, is, so far .as ',goes, a - nullification of the Constitution itself, and a .breach of the solemn trust committed - to our . charge. We care not by what name itls called, or what excuse is made for it, it is a .revival of the old and odious test - principle of European Govenunents, with this difference, that!the lat her take thilir ground openly, and .ilefend the principle; while the former deny the principle, and meanly purnati-their object iu , sn: indirect and underhand Matiner. If Catholic eitisens are to be excluded from office on amount of their religion; if they are not to be permitted .to unite with their fellow citizens in a political party, why not seek to change the National and State 'Constitutions by introducing's religious test? No Know Nothing platform hoe went so far as this, as we are aware of, and yet it world be the more manly course to pursue. Religious Liberty;is the great principle which underlies Protestantism, and on its broad foun dation reeds the superstructure of our free insti tutions. The party which assails this founda tion principle is an anomaly in oar country; and at war with our institutions. To make the re ligious sentiments of a man the reason for ex cluding him from office, and for withholding from him political fellowship, is a gross violation of the, great principle of religious liberty and of the rights of conscience. For one we hold our own religions rights too dear, to be found abetting an attempt to mull th nee of others. Wenre glad to see that the protestant relig ions preen is taking the right . ground on this subject. Two extracts _have lately acme under our notice, from papers published. by two lead- Aug protestant denominations, which we coin- Mend to the attention of those who have entered upon this rinhapy crusade: The Prethyterisn Critic says: There is no demand whatever for a great na tional moveutunt against the Catholic Church. The recent excitement in the country has been, in the main, the result of A corrupt movement of unprincipled politicians, to excite the Protestant feeling of the people and to ride into power upon 'the tide. They have run foul of the great max im, which they have so conspicuously set forward among- their principles, as If for the purpose of exposing the profligacy of the whole movement, by violating in penalize what they praise in the ory. It..ie absurd to deny that making the mere religious sentiment of a man the reason for refu ting to vote for him, in a, violation of the great principle of religious liberty. It is allowing a principle of discriminating the political aspect of a vote to be sound and just which would „be wicked and unprincipled, if embo, iied in a law. If our neighbour make their dislike to our Pres byterian sentiments the ground of their refusing to vote for us, it is perfectly useless to disguise that we ere under political responsibility for re ligious opinions—that, quad io,c, we are suffering for them. The objectioard feature in this view of the case is, nuking religious opinions mat- , tended by any viciousness of action growing oat of it, a ground for an nniverral discrimination in political affairs, affecting permanently large manses of citizens- This is our first and great objection to the American or Know Nothing party: it is violating the very principle of reli gions liberty, which it professes to conserve; and has adopted a construction of that principle which strips it of all practical force, leaving it a dead letter on the statute book, and abandoning its control over the political action of the people. The New• Orleans Methodist Christian Advo cate, takes similar pound: The proceedings of the convention lately, as sembled in Phibidelphis, whose platform is pub lished In another column, werrwatched by us with Peat interest. Ecclesiastical matters were early introduced. An attempt, was made, prin cipally by Southern men; to throw them but But the "Catholic test" was affirmed, and foully reaffirmed- "The Roman Catholic Church" is mimed /saucily, "Resistance" to it is pro pounded among the things ere denda and the things agenda. If we read correctly, every Cath olic is proscribed: He may be an American—na tive, good and patriotic; he may stoutly and pre°. tically . deny the power of the Pope in civil mat ter's as iMthferenee from the ecclesiastical. Yet, for his rellgion's sake he is barred 'advancement I teal! political statione, execative, legislative, ja dicial or ' diplomatic?' This is a tat to which 1 out religions principles and republican instincts, the spirit of our itutitations and the liberty of consoled:tee, as interpreted by the age are all im posed. No party holding it, however excellent be Other principles held in combination, may expect to peas the conservative people of the United States, especially of the South. It cannot bodge a step—it cannot stand, with thismillstone about its neck. Our poeition is distinctly This. We hold the principle of Religious Liberty as sacred. We will .defend it Against all seasulta from every quarter, and just as soon when coming from Protestants it Catholics: All American citizens .. standee s perfect equality before the Constitu tion, be their religious sentiments what they. may. *e will do nothing to invade the political . OT religious rights of any man because he dif fers from us in hill religious views. With these opinions :we cannot' consent to unite with any , party which excludes an American citizen from office or political fellowship because he worehips God Ins mode different from ours, or holds a creed diverse from mire. if he assails our in stitutions or seeks - to make what we concoive to lata.. dangerous innovations, we will oppose his efforts and vote against. Mtn at the ballot box, for that M.S/outdone. If he times with - ns In , his political policy, we welcome him to our po litical fellowship on terms of paled equality. This is our creed, and is it not truly American? A Iterrustroas Cotnr! There is no time to be wasted in delays. , FROM. CALIFORNIA Leaer from a Resident of Sax Francisco to Au friend in Washinonn. Sas FRANCISCO, Juno 15, , 1855.—The reac tion, as regards rent and labor, still continues here, and the only wonder is that such enormous 'taus should have been maintained for so long a period in face of the competition by floods of immigrants and money, or credits, not on from the Atlantic) States and Europe, but fro every other portion of the .world, including Ch and "the rest of mankind," who were' , attra ed by the excessive rates of compensation for Is r and interest for capital. The enormous incomes of ' some real estate holders have dwindled down at a most rapid and` fearful rate, and, though al ready small, continue to "become beautifully I lees." I am now moving Into a house at s4o' per month, which four months since readily brought $ll5 pr month, and "fancy rents' have declined at even a greater ratio. The United States bonded warehouses, for which' $6,000 per month was originally paid, would not at this moment command one fourth of that rate ; and under a clause in the lease, which provides for a re-valuation of the rent every two years by disioterested persons, will no doubt, at the next biennial valuation, if proper attention is paid to the Matter by -the govern meat officia's, be reduced accordingly. Neither labor nor capital will ever again be no valuable in. California as heretofore. The supply of both is daily increasing, and the days of $BO per month for farm laborers and found, $6 per de in the city for common laborers, and $l2 fo mechanics, have gone, not again to return ; is Six per cent. per month for money, as lllic wise rents which gave a nett income of fifty to seventy-fire per cent. per annum on the cost of the property. The product of the mines is daily heaping up capital here, exclusive of all the gold mit to the Atlantic States, Europe, China and South America. Still, however, tents and labor will continue for a very consid erable time yet to be much higher than with you, and, with the other great attractions on thii coast, will cause California to increase with great rapidity in population, wealth and re sources. To give you an Idea of the fertility of the soil and the nature of the climate: We have had strawberries since Marsh, and they will last until November; blackberries shim May; pears and grapes are the fruits of the country ; rasp- I berries of gigantic growth; cherries beautiful; peaches, it is expected, will be cheaper - this year than with you; three years since they sold at one to two dollars each ; other fruits in abund• arm. We have had artichokes that might choke an elephant since . February, and vegetables of all kinds in an abundance that would amaze you ; potatoes at twenty-fin cents per bushel ; and such potatoes:—perfect Sour when baked. Then we have sweet potatoes, oranges, mangoes, and ta■ny other fruits from the Sandwich Is lands; nuts and preserves from Chill; and last, though not least, gold from the mountains in greater protrusion than ever. Such another country the eon never shone upon. "BIONLS 7/X2 Milne AIM ►LT AWAl."—Ele der this bead the Batton Courier ay': "The tr,..t. of this axiom was fully exemplified ye:del-cloy by the eight of s private schedule of railroad stocks and bonds belonging to an individual and ♦awned, eighteen years ago, at a little over .$374- 000, the market Wee of which to-day It only about $113,000, showing a depieciatica of $261- 000 in one year and a half, beside the lost of in terest. The system of borrowing on pledges L a serious evil, which often entices people to ra in. At the present time it is practised to New York to a fearful extent. The asak loans and discounts there already reach to the enormous ag gregate of $98,000,000 a very large percentage of which is demanded loans on collateral pledgee liable to be:notified at any time by giving one, day's warning.
