Tllll ERUITION Or MOUNT Vlllo9ll3l3.Tlfillt,
- the Naples correspondent of the Boston Journal,
gives the follewingteresting particulars rela
ting to the late eruption of Veenviva :
. The eruption of Vesuvius, which bee been go

present month can now be safely considered an
(meted.fine The people who bad l flowing homes
of being ingunhed ln th lava,
have returned, thankful that no more damage
has been done. This eruption has been one of
great interest to scientific men, from many pecu
liarities which it has exhibited. Before the Ist
of May the rumbling sounds which always ac
company and precede an eruption were heard,
though by ono means as loud or eel:Amnon' 'em
on former occasions. Many fears were enter
utiued lest they should end in awearthnuake, as ,
the old craters did not present the 'appearance
of an approaching outbreak. These fears were
relieved by the breaking out of three or four new •
vents, or small craters upon the side, of the
mountain, mext Mount Somme, from which the
lava has Sowed in se unceasing stream from
about the beginning of this Month to the 27th.
The new craters are at the base of the none, on
the northeast Bide, and nearly in s straight line.
From them an immense momint of lava has is
sued, and TS112121111; almost in the direction of the
city of Naples, it leas filled up the Talley 'or gorge
between the two mountains in'some Ones to
the depth of five hundred feet. The length , of
the stream is estimated at seven' miles, and its
width Metes from three-fourths it a mile to three
or four hundred feet. ! -
In its commit has overflowed fields, orchards,
gardens and vineyards it has destroyed twenty
or thirty houses, besides one line villa; but such
wee its regularity that sufficient time was give;
for all the met:mann to escape. In one instance
the stream of lava divided just before reaching
a ine mansion; "and fiewhig down on both aides,
left it untouched. The'morse of th, stream of
lava was most singular; and unlike in Its move
ments any other known object. Prom its great
cohesive 'power it moves slowly over the ground,
and the outside particles cooling rapidly, it pre
gents the appeseance of a solid embankment
which had been thrOwn up by the hand of man,
endowed with life, and moving in its irresistible;
devastating course ever the land. The stream
as it moved on its course down the valley, some:
times' rushing through a narrow defile in the , 1
rocks, and then spectating out into a wider and
more 'majestic . river of, fire SR it reached the
gentler elope below,, can herdly deacribed.
We welted before it as it advanced, presenting
its jigged, =eking. front, , and occasiooatly
through the cooling - ;aniface would burst the' .
molten lava, which for a moment' Mild hiss ; and
eracMe as it covered any green object, and then
hardening by the exposure the gap , would oldie
again. We etood, beside it 'as it „pained and
thrust our sticks into it, which horned Bite ttuda.
The most .violent part of the eruption, of
- comae, occurred at the , time, the new - Miters
opened, when the force ncessary to burst
through the side of the mountain ttirew . Up,: a
prodigious amount of red het lava et the detect:
