Having, from the first well marked revela tions of the true nature and characteristics of the order, opposed it with all the earnestness and prilrer we. Possessed, as dangeront, provcrip tive and un-American, we cannot but rejoice to 4nd that the day of its doom draws on apace. We have never for one moment believed it could long exist, but the cataatrophe is approaching more rapidly than we anticipated. Its internal corruption, and its intolerable oppression is fast driving from its ranks thousands of good men who joined it in the faith that it was to be the purifier of the old parties, but who stand aghast to find it reeking with corruption and controlled by those veryneprincipled demagogues nod office seekers who had rendered the old parties so ob ooxious. Its editor, Hon. , Alex. K. McCuras, was appointed State Printer last winter, and possesses the confidence of the' best men of all parties whermer he is known. His graphic delineation of the condition of the Know Nothing party in Franklin county will an . ewer pretty well for Allegheny and numerous . other counties, and is no doubt a tree picture of Know Nothingisrn everywhere. His resolute determination- to oppose it hereafter, regardless of all consequences, will be enthusiastically re sponded to by thousands. ho have been inveig . eld into the order, and by tens of thousands out of it. We invite our friend of the Whig to 'join with us in inaugurating the Republican party of Pennylvania, as called for.by the exigencies of the times, and the .wine of the people, The following Is the article referred to: A correspondent, in whom we recognise a Whig who n faltered in the faith, desireseur views as to the proper course , ifor the Whigs to ,adoptin thriooming - campaign. In this town, where but a few short months ago intolerance reigned supreme in the Order, meta blush to speak of its once cherished and boasted obligation; and not less than one hundred of its members, embracing many of our ' most respectable citizens, do not go near the council room—never again will be found in it, normill they pay any respect to its mandates.- ' Many of them- would doubtless vote its ticket, - provided It-pleased them better than any other • presented, but such a thing as obedience to the secret power that once brooked no denial unless at the cost of disgrace, Is regarded as one of the follies of the age upon which the shades of obliv ionl should speedily gather. We are altogether within the bounds of tenth, therefore., when we say that the Whip are stronger now than they were at the last election, and the only Unwritten -history of Know Nothingisto, as Understood by its oaths and grips and secret council; is its decline and We say, letit fall. It deserves its fate, and habitually courted it by its intolerance. But if the few Know Nothing leaders in this place, who have comfortable offices already marked out for them selves, insist upon the present discipline of the Order and wreck the party to advance their own selfish purposes, let the responsibility be upon them—not as! We trust that we are understood, for we eertabsly mean to bei We • have thought well and know whereof' we ypeak, when we point to the speedy decline and_ certain fall of Know-Nothingism as it is noWlinder stood and practiced, and we shall mince no words in dealing with it, for it has ceased to have terrors save for itself. Organs whose pre carious existence hangs upon sworn supporters rather than merit, may plead and threaten and zig-zag to all sides of all questions to save the tottering structure ; and demagogues who dread open, manly — action, lest their intrigues to mob power should be frustrated, may still attend the ilmerted council he'll, and endeavor to rally the faltering ranks; but the handwriting St on the wall In living, flaming characters, and no Tiernan agency can per petuate and direct to success a political organ• ization that imposes oaths and iecrecy,• and sac ' rificea the very manhood of its members. No secret party can ever ~rry this county—this State—this nation. We care not how just may be its principles or how pure its purposes it must open the widest ayennes for political chicanery and finally perish; and for the Whigs of Frank lin comity now to cover the defeat of Know Nothiugism, would be to court the deepest dis grace and to realize the keenest disaster. Their hands are clean—let them so remain. We .to not mean to waste our Vote on abstrac tions or impossibilities. We shall advocate and vote with the best ayailatle partY we can find, and if wo can't have eparty or a ticket exactly to our liking, we shall choose the least of the evits presented. If, as we have said before, the revolting features of Know Nothingism are cast aside, And all who desire to vindicate the rights of the North are invited to unite in the restore, time of the Missouri Compromise, and men of integrity -and capacity are presented as candi dates, we shall go with it and ask no questions ; but if Know Nothingiom insists upon forcing its despotic, oath•bound secretly upon the public, we shall teem the support of the ticket most -likely to defeat it, ,the course of duty and the path of safety. The Whip are abundantly able to control the result, alike in this county and in the State, and if the proscription that now hangs over them is not removed, and their con victions respected, duty to their 'cause and jus tice to themselves will prompt them to repel the insult and resent the injury. Such shall be oar course as a Whig, and are we not right I Lot reason and justice answer. Otno.—The telegraphic despatches from Co lumbus which we published on Saturday, detail ing the action of the Republican Convention held on Friday the 13th, gave us great pleasure. The platform adopted its concise,.comprebensive and embraces nothing which can alienate any portion of the republican masses of the State. It is just the thing for the crude; and the ezample it sets 'is worthy of imitation in all directions. 'The ticketnominated strikes us as all excellent one. We are glad to see it headed with Ihe name of Sautes P„ Cusse for Governor. The wed nation to that office was, under the circumstan ces, eminently due to that gentleman, and we have no doubt that the people of Ohio will rally to his support with a cordiality and determina tion never before manifested. During the six years he represented Ohio in the United States Senate he not only faithfully defended and main ,tained the interests of his State and gave expres sion to her political sentiments, but he took an earnest and prominent stand on the aids of Freedom. An accidental democratic majority in the legislature deprived him of the honor of a re-election, to which he was entitled; and it therefore behooves the people to endorse him and show to the south that they know how to uphold a faittifel public servant. The opportrutity being now afforded them of doing so, they will not be . slow to avail themselves of it. The anti-Nebrasksi masses of Ohio have nobly laid aside all other issues, and united to do battle on the on!' great practical question before the American people. Let those of Pennsylvania go and do likewise. OSOILLATIMI STRAIIII-FtNOINE.-We have now been using for some months past, an oscillating steam engine for running our presses, manufac tured by Messrs. Cridge & Wadsworth, Bank Lane, Allegheny. After this experience, we are prepared to say that it has given as the highest satisfaction. Although a smaltongine, ten inch stroke by , tidiameter, it rues three presses with . perfect ease. It is simplicity itself, not liable to get out of repair, and takes op but little room. We have had two slide-valve engines, but they Were greatly inferior to this for power, simplici ty and strength. Oscillating engines have here ' tofore been objected to on account of leaking steam, but an improvement, patented by Mr. Cridge, completely removes this objection, and for engines for purposes such as ours, renders I the oscillating engine superior to all others. Its grmitest_merit, however, next to its simplicity and durability, is the saving of coal. This is very great; in our case it has amounted to over fifty percent. A governor is attached to the engine by the same makers, of so delicate a character that one or all the presses can be thrown off at once, without any jar to the en gine, it immediately accommodating itself to the work'it has to do. We commend these engines to the attention of the -public. CAUPiII or Pmts.—With our characteristic recklessness, no a people, we have taken no pains to investigate and enumerate the causes of fires. It is not because we have not enough of them; or do not lose kulficient by them; but because we are—too ranch absorbed in our go-ahead nice to stop for such trifles. During the past year there were in New York city three hundred and eighty-five fires, with a lees on buildings of eight hundred„ and twenty thou sand dollars, sea two millions and seventy-three thousand defiant on wares. There had taken place two bundled and twenty-one additional alarms, mostly caused- by,burning chimneys, spirit-gas explosions, &e., while for the residue no real ranee tould be ascertained. The im mense aggregate of lose here set down does not however, express the total sacrifice of property. The figures in this case are obtained from the Insurance agents, and show only the insured property that was destroyed. Hundreds of thou sands worth of furniture and other personal pro perty, are disrOured by fire, of which neither the underwriters nor the Press hare ever say Inowl edge. It Inight be supposed that, with such an annual burden of loss to bear, there would be some method adopted to ascertain how so many fires originate,' and thus learn bow beet to avoid. their rectirreictu but nothing of the kind has yet been attempted..
