10X0i1E110 tna BLAVaaf QUZSTION,--For some
months before the assembling of the Know
Nothing National Convention at Philadelphia,
, tJto fear was expressed that the Slavery gueltion
voimirkbe ignored by that body,, and a general
indignation was expressed at snob an idea by
the Anti-Nebraska men of the. Northern Stater,
both in and out of the order., Just after the re
peal of the Missouri Compromise, and the out
rages which bad followed that base and treacher
ous breach of a solemn compact, it was felt that
'no greater insult could be inflicted on the people
of Uns Nithern States than for a party aiming
to form. 'X National 'organization to leave the
qu'efition of interest oat of Its platform.
The Convention met, and - soon the extraordi
nary spectacle as presented of a portion of the
Northern delegides, with Ex-Governor Johnston
of this State at their heed, attempting to carry
. out this contemptible policy of ignoring the very
question which was eo powerfully agitating the
public mind. This project failed, mainly from
the resolute determination of the Southern deli
gates. If Northern men were thus willing to tao
ride" the cause of liberty on the altar Ofiticrip
tire Nativism, and in the mad race for power
and plunder, Southern men were not inch das
tard' as to resort to milt a mean shirking of the
great question. They demanded to know who
they were affiliating with In a political organi
sation whose object was to obtain possession of
the Government and give laws to the country;
and they determined that the derriands of slavery
should be recognised and secured before they
would move one step. They conquered, as hon
est, earnest men who made straightforward to
their purpose generally do over tricksters and
time-servers. The 'pro-slavery platform was
adopted. Gov. Johnston succumbed, promising
to lay the matter before his State Council, and
abide its decision, and still to labor for the:cause.
When he came home be was met by a storm of
complaints by his brethren in this region, and m
determination was expressed to relieve the Order
in' this State from the t odinm of standing on th e
National pro-slavery tdatform. They were di:-
termined to have a thorough Anti-Nebraska
platform, or they would secede. This was the
feeling and the expression. To this end a large
delegation was sent on from this county, amount
ing to sixty-five members, representing, we have
reason to believe, every local CounciL What
was the result?
After &struggle of near two days a committee
on a platform zres adopted, which brought in a
majority and a minority report. The majority
presented a platform clear and outspoken against
Slavery aggression. There was no mistaking
its meaning.' It walked up to the question with
the same directness of purpoee that marked the
Southern delegates in the National Council.—
The minority tepert presented the platform
adopted by the National Council, with the ex
ception of thel2th or Slavery resolution, and
instead of this the old, reje . r.ted ignoring scheme,
revamped and remodeled, which had been pre
needed to the National Council and .rejectrd by

airy or this bantling..
The majority report came up for action, when
just- as the question was about to be taken, too►.
Johnston arose out o( order, greatly to the as
tonishment and indignation of the large majority
of his no-delegates from Allegheny, and opposed
the Anti4flavery plank in the majority report.
Be tad only im opportunity to utter a few words,
but they were enough to encourage those in the
eastern and middle counties who wished to get
rid-of the treableaome question. Than was no
chinos fora reply. The rote Was imrsedisteljr
taken, and GOT. Johnston and, ten others from
Allstbeay toted against that report, sad it was
boat by a Tote of 89 to 114. If Gov. Johnston
:and theist' from this county who sated with him
had gam with the Alleghenydeleption, the
joritrieliort would have dirtied and the'"party
at least would have had the- credit of staading
on a'nianly and honest Anti-Nebraska platform.,
This is the second time that Gov. Johnston,
stitldn a few weeks;iias voted against introducing.
into the Know-Nothing platform. a fair, hOnest
and distinct issue of Freedein spinet Shivery,
in reference to the Nebraska outrage.
Thevainerity platform with theigaoringyino
lotion was Alopted, 22 delegates from Allegheny
County, voting against it, Gov. Johnston, of
course, voting fin It.

Shore roads have offered to eubscribe $400,000
'to the !took of the Pittsburgh and Erie Rail
rOWl, if the Erie authoritiee will agree to &pro
posed basis of adjustment between the city and
the Railroads. Shia the Councils of that city
refuse 'to do ; but to show their favor for the
road, they have pasted the'following resolutions :
Resoked,..That in order to dispel all doubts of
the deep interest of this city in the success of
the Pittsburgh and Erie Railroad, and of her
intention to contribute substantial aid, that the
Select and Common Council hereby pledge the
• ity for &subscription of $300,000 to its capital
stook on the usual terms of other municipalities,
as soon as proper authority for the same can be
had.,
Resolved, That in view of the great and ged-.
eral benefits the road wffinonfer upon the whole
community, we recommend the County Commis
sioners to make a suhscitPtion of $200,000.
Both subscriptions conditioned that the Pitts
burgh and - Erie Railroad be fairly constructed,
to connect the Ohio rivet throtiglisthe coal fields
with Lake Erie at our harbor. ,
The proposition of the. Lake Shoresvoads tray
be better understood, perhaps, when hi s s Enown
that the Pittsburgh and Erie Company is con
structing, in defiance of a fair interpretation of
its charter, 'a branch road across the State from
the New York line to the Ohio line, connecting
at the latter point with a road to Columbrte
The construction of this branch would enable
the New Yolk roads to reach the West without
going through Erie at all. It is the first in
stance, we. believe, of branches being construct
ed to a main line before anything has been done
towards constructing the main line itself.
Tun Hoirricoonstar.—This leading and ex

from Philadelphia, where it is now published by

Mr. Vick, the former publisher, has sold to Mr.

from Rochester, New York, to Philadelphia.
This work was matted by the lamented Dolman,

After his death it was removed from Albany to

Unjustly acquired reputation. It will hereafter
be edited by Jolts JAI 131t1T11, whose contribu

have been highly valued. We are sorry to lose
Mr. Barry, but we have great confidence in the
judgment and horticultural Mate and knowledge
of Mr. Smith. Mr. Barry will also continue a
contributor, and many other gentlemen, veteran
Pomologiats,'Hortioulturists and Botanists, and
lovers of rural art, have agreed to contribute to
its pages. The present number is from the hands
of tha new publisher and editor, and it does not

before, which is saying a great deal. Being pub

have a large list of contributors and subscribers
ni this region.
Hon. M. C. Turr, of Mercer, was grossly in
dignant at us, last year, because we represented
him as =wettable on the Nebraska question. He
paraded his vote against the bill on its final pas
sage, and claimed the confidence of the anti
slavery men of his district. We thought him,
then, an untrustworthy man, and now we have
the assurance that we were right. At the late
democratic county convention in Merest he oc
cupied the President's chair, and a resolution
was adopted endoraim the Nebraska bill, with=
out one word of dissent from him. Fortunately
,for the people, he was not re-elected to Con

The Siege * of Sebastopol
[ham; Moto:Won Thaw Joao 26.1
The despatches from General Pelissier, of the
19th and 20th inst., which were published in the
/knitter of yesterday morning, Oaffiee to prove
that the check sustained by the allied farces in
the assault of the 18th, had neither abated their
confluence, nor materially raised the hopes of
the enemy. In the night immediately following
the unsuctensiul attack, a panic appears to have
seized the Hussiansorho flew to their guni, and
opened a general -ire on the whole line of their
works, although no - gun was threatening them.
An armistice took ,place on the following day, for
the burial of those who hal falimin that terri
ble conflict.
On the 20th the approaches of the besiegers
on this...lido of the Central Ravine were driven

suburb at the bottom of the southern hi-ACT;
and in the meantime the allies were placing
heavy guns on the Elelinghinaki and Volhynian
Batteries, taken • on. the 7th of June, so as to
.command the great harbor. The tone of this
brief but significant °mammal:4Bon clearly shows
tbat tho failure of theesseault en the Malakhoff
Tower aud the Redan has in no degree lessened
the. vigor . with which, the siege is now carried
on, and the destruction by. the Russians then
selves of one of the suburb. of Sebastopol,
within their, lines, is a very strong . proof of the
increasing diffuielty, of the defence. •

by hurrying on the assault, though a multitude
of 'minable lives may be lost. If the Malakoff
I,Tower and Malted= were to be taken tit all by
a coup if. main, the attempt might, perhaps, have
been made with mister facCeSII on the 7th, when
the Russians had just been driven , from their

of the manner in which the tine was spent from

those days should have passed at so critical a.

On more than One memorable nonagon in his
career in the Peninsula, the Duke of Wellington
I n ot only employed similar meatus, but staked the
fate of his army on their success, and especially in
theAhird siege of Badajoa in ISL." - Contrary I
to all calculation, the Pictorials, an outwork of
the town somewhat resembling by its position
the kfamelon or Kamtschatta kedgitht , before I
Sebastopol, was roma without being battered,
and Bad*: itself was carried by storm before I
I the counterscarp was blown in or the fi re of the
place silenced. No man who has ever read it
; can have forgotten the language in' which the
historian of that great contest relates the most:
terrible action of the war. The ramparts, crowd=:
ed with dark figures and glittering arms; just,'
Illuminated by the glare of flames from below;
the red columns of the British, deep and broad,
coming on like streams of burning lava; the sud
den arrival of the Light Division and the Fourth
Division on the brink of the yawning the*
into which they dashed with incredible fain
some - to be smothered in the wet ditch beneath,'
some to be dashed by the shot against the strong
palisade, some to be torn upon the jagged range
of-sword-blades fixed in ponderous beams which
defended the top of the breach. For two boors
did our men persevere with indomitable courage
in the dtempt to force their way through this
i scene of slaughter, and it seas not until bun
dreda of the boldest and bravest had perished
that they were compelled to acknowledge that
the breach of the Trinidad was impregnable. It
was past midnight, and 2,040 men had already
, fallen when the Doke of Wessasaros ordered
the remainder to retire and to reform fora second
assault. Even that order waaexecuted with diffi
culty, and the fate of Bads* might have beets
undecided that night if other portions ,of the
troop' had not found means to scale the Castle
and to carry a bastion, and enter the tort at a
different point. Out of the Anglo-Portuguese
army of 28,00 men no lees than 6,000 fell at
the seigeo Badejos, and 8,760 fell at the as.'
sank alone
i i
We trust th at we shall not . now
have to ent as great a loss, but we are deal
ing with f more numerous armies and p place
of infinitel greater extent. .
. . ...
We refer tO this example not only because
in some of Its circumstances it will probably be
found to present an imperfect analogy with the
attack on the Malakoff and the Roden., but also
as 'proof lm
the Duke of Wellington in 1,812, at
thespinnaile f glory and at the head . of an
invittifible ' y, was stopped in one portion.
of his.'attack upon Badajor, by causes not very
dissimilar from those which the, allied troops
encountered at Sebastopol, although in the
Duke's case the town was carried the seine night
by other means. There Is, however this ma
terial difference in the position of the two • ar
mies. The fate of the campaign of lug turned.
upon the capture of Badajox within a certain
number of days, for both Souk and Marmont
were hanging with superior forces in the rear
of .tho British army. At Sebastopol, on the
contrary, the superiority of forces is uOll on the
side of the besiegers, and, far from having any
thing to apprehend fon the Russians in the.
field, nothing, more would ocitstuce to the tri
umph of our enterprise than to find an Duper. :
trinity of meeting them there.
Our refuters will not fail to be struck by thi
statement in Gen. Peliesier's dispatch of the
20th that the Russians have themselves' set fire
to a portion of the suburbs. That seems to form
en estakilished pait of Russian tactics, when
evacuation is contemplated; indeed, At stand' to
reason that they will only barn what they find
It hopeless to defend. If they should be driven
altogether from the south side of Sebastopol we
Bove no doubt they will attempt the complete
destruction of the place, with very little consid
eration for those who maybe lefkin ,it.. As,
however, the French Ire now In possession of
the forte which oonunand the Careening Bay and
the great harbor - beyond it, it is probable that
the passage from the south to the north side of
the port will soon become difficult, from the
range of the heavy guns placed on those, heighti
On every side the pressure to which the garriemi
is exposed, has within the last few days great•
ly increased, and, although they succeeded on
the 18th inrepelling our attack, it is not alleged
that they have ever regained one inch of the
ground which had previously been wrested from
them. The principal Russian outworks are now
the advanced positions in the lines of the be
siegers, and our confidence is unabated in the
steady progress and ultimate success of this
great enterprise of war.
