OUT BOSSES AT THE CRT FANS.-
The "glorious rearth" was appropriately cele. '
brated at the City Fattn. The editor of the
CUirMin Achxxxsts was present and in that pa-
per of yesterday gives at interesting account of
what he there heard and saw. Tho old poor
house is denoted exclusively to insane paupers .
It contains, at present, 28 inmates—poor wrecks
of our common humanity, exhibjting nearly all
the.shades of mental aberration from total inco
herency on all subjects, to such cases of monoma
nia u can only bcdeteoted by directing the mind
to subjects which fall within those mysterious
limits .where it bas strangely lost its power of
self-direction. •
Amongst others, was one who is thus spoken I
of: "The orator having learned from his ex
cellent keeper, Mr. Long, that Ade was .inde
pending* day; requested liberty to make a
oPectell. To gratifi h him, the request was allow
ed. Ho mounting e heap of earth aforesaid,
hkat nee commenced, Teilow soldiers%—atod
Continued speaking at the top of his voice, with
ready utterance and quiteuratorical action from
half to three quarters of an hour. He closed
quite appropriately by invoking the blessings of
heaven on our country. lie then bowed to hie
auditors and retired. His audience, however,
did not seem to be greatly edified by the perfor
mance, except one poor old man, who, being ef
fected with lit. Anthony's dance,' seemed all
the while lobe nodding assent. Much that the
gator said was coherent and sensible. AVe dere
say worse speeches have been perpetrated; - out
of bedlam, on our nationtl birth-day."
"We afterwards approached another one of
these, poor infortunates yrheee, one idea is the
Maine Law. His pockets - were etiiffedwitli extracts
cut from newspapers, forming a roll carefully tied
round with threads, which. he called 'the docu
ments:. The keeper Introductng the subject,
he at once began to expatiate on the great im
poitance and necessity of the Maine Law. He
attributes all the misfortunes and wretchedness
of those around him to intemperance, which he
thinks the Maine Law shad it existed, might
have prevented. He often . adds emphasis , to
hie diet:ease, by referring directly to individuais
around him, mentioning their names, as instan
ces of the dreadful effects of the liquor traffics:
Surely there - is method in this man's gladness.
Would that some tersons permitted to run at
large afforded on this subject equal evidence of
sanity."
We also extract the, following from the Advo
cate: _ .
"We remarked to the Superintendent that we
observed among the eta men several very intel
ligent fitoes. 'That man,' said he, pointing to
an old gentleman, (90 years of age) who at the
moment was sleeping on his-chair 'was many
years a respectable editor, he edited the first
German newspaper ever published in the city of
Pittsburgh? He had the appearance of a man
possessed of strong faculties, is still healthy and
active, and bids fair to outlive his centenary
birth-day. 'We afterwards saw the Mater of the
old German editor in the insane department.
