WIDSZSDAY was a glorious . day' for the cele
bration of the seventy-ninth anniversary of our .
nation's independence. The weather wall very
clear, and not too warm to be uncomfortable.
go accident of a dangerous nature occurred, and
such as did transpire will be found in our col
uMns to-day.
The Orphans' Picnic, in Denny's Grove, was
numerously attended—indeed, we might say,
there woe en immense number of persons present
during the entire day. Many enjoyed themselves
by participating in the mazy dance, end others
amused themselves by strolling through the
woods or engaging in some innocent play. A
couple of disgraceful rows took place, but such
diem are difficult to avoid. The,hlanagers are
not to blame. There were several persons pres
ent whose room, we imagine, would have been
more desirable than their company..
The Methodist Sunday Schools held a picnic.
in. Roup's Grove, near East Liberty. It was a
very pleasant affair' and was visited by a large
lumber or our citizens, who conducted them-
Mites in a becoming manner.
A picnic was given by the Fairmount Fire
Company at Campbell's Grove, Turtle Creek.—
We were not in attendance, but understand that
it was managed in an excellent manner.
The Sabbath School teachers and scholars con
nected with the Sandusky Street (Allegheny)
Baptist Church, together with many of the con
gregation; celebrated the "Glorious Fourth," at
Robinson's Grove. „There was en abundant sup
ply of substantials, luxuries, lemonade, tea and
coffee; of which more than four hundred per
sons partook, with an appetite rendered keen by
exercise and pure country air. The day was
very pleasantly spent in cheerful and innocent
+porta, in which old and young engaged.
Amusements were quite plenty during the
evening.
The display of are-works at the Arsenal seem
ed to be by far the most attrahtive exhibition.
- The space allotted to spectators was filled at
an early hair, and those who arrived after eight
o'clock 'were forced to leave, being unable to
secure positions from which they could view
the works with advantage. It is estimated that
there were twenty thousand - people in attend
ance, agreat proportion of whom were females.
The evening was agreeable, and nothing oc
curred to make the exhibition 'otherwise than
pleasing. The affair was gotten up on a scale
of magnificence unequalled, we believe. by any
former year. Pyrotechnic displays are always
beautiful, but_we do not recollect to have ever
seen any thing of the kind that pleased us so
much as that at the Garrison on Wednesday
evening. The vast concourse of people were
amused for about two hours. The last scene
was very beautiful and appropriate. It was a
large eagle, with the words ••good night" bla
zing over it.
We unperstood there: was a grand display of
fireworks on the Monongahela, but as we did
not witness it, we cannot speak with certainty.
WASHINGTON Common.—At the annual meet
ing of the Alumni Association of this venerable
institution, held last week, among other resolu
tions adopted was the following:
Resolved, That inasmuch as the next annual
Commencement of the College will complete the
first half century of its existence, Messrs. J. 11.
Ewing, Gee. B. Hart, Rev. Jas. I. Brownson,
Alex. Wilson, Esq., and Dr. J. Wilson Wishart,

rate with the importance of the occasion, and
the mission which Providence has called the in

living be earnestly invited to participate in flint
celebration.
FULTON STRECT S. E. CILLEBRATIC;7I.—The cel
ebration of the Fourth by the Fulton Street Sab
bath School was as pretty a thing of the kind
as we ever attended—in fact, it was far beyond
our, anticipation, and was looked upon with ad
miration by all present, more especially by the
children, for whose especial benefit it was got
ten up. The scholars numbering over 100, male
and female, assembled in their room on the
corner of Fulton, and Webster streets between
the hairs of nine and thn o'clock, A. e.. and af
ter considerable time spent in singing, and in
listening to short bat very appropriate addresses
delivered by Bishop Simpson, D. Cockman, and
the Hem Cramer and McGowan, were waited
upon by their respective teachers with the vari
ous choice delicacies with which the spacious ta
ble was sowgi provided: The whole affair was
conducted in a manner highly creditable to the
ladies and gentlemen who have the school in
charge, and to the general admiration and de
light of the large number of visitors present.—
The ladies, who, alone. era adepts in matters of
the kind, deserve great tr,sise for the large num
