FIGHT BETH - CNN A SQUIT.EIII AND A ROBIN.— It is said to be an established fact, that squirrels and birds cannot live together in pefect harmony. The Manchester Mirror relates an instance which was recently witnessed near Manchester, N. M., of a contest between a squirrel and a robin. The squirrel ascended an apple tree, with felonious intent and malice aforethought, for the purpose of sucking the eggs of a robin that had built her nest there. Fortunately, Mrs. Redbreast was upon the nest at the time, and sustained with valor the attack of her four-footed assailant, and Mr. Squirrel soon found that he bad rashly as saulted a perfect Sebastopol of a bird's nest, de fended by a foe more terrible to him than would bo the forces of the whole combined Russian ar my. In the fierce battle which occurred he was sadly scratched and.beaten, and at length retired in disgust and shame from the tree. This squir rel was one of the striped variety—a plebian . "ship-monk," as a country schoolmaster would say—and probably no sentiments of chivalry or refinement had ever been instilled in his ignoble mind. SEM FRiT OF DAOOIIIII/18.—In the Half lien tnry Benin of the Rev. Dr. Brace, of Nfiwing ton, Connecticut, we find a fact respecting the Edwards family, which we do not remember to have seen elsewhere stated. Speaking of Mr. Backus, one of his predecessors, he says:—"Dis wife wee one of ten daughters, every one of whom has been said to be six feet tall—making sixty feet of daughters, and all of them strong in mind—children of the Rev. Timothy Edwarda, of East Windsor." That man who had sixty feet of daughters, and besides them one eon who had more than sixty feet of intellect,. must ac cording to the Psalmist's view of things, have been a happy man. Rev. Jams G. Fes, a native of Kentucky, was interrupted and silenced while addressing the people of Lincoln county, a short time since.— Thereupon, the people of Jessamine county; the residence of Cassius M. Clay, held a public meet ing. Clay made a speech of great power, carry ing every one with him. They unanimously passed strong resolutions, denouncing the people of Lincoln, and pledged themselves that the right of free speech should be maintained at all haz ards. The right spirit eeema to prevail in many portions of that State. Tux MAR ovxx zus Feas.—A writer from the Falls to the Buffalo Express, Melling of the man who went over the Fall& on Friday, says: "His oar& were hanging in the oar-lookr, and he Was sitting with his arms folded scream ing for help. A few well directed strokes of the oars would have brought him to the therm but on he went, until he came opposite to the back piazza of the Cataract House, where the boat capsized.. He was seen to come up once and throw out his arms. He was a young man about 20 years old." The probability Is that the poor fellow. :laving by Jame means that will never be explained, found himself In the rapids, became paralyzed with horror, and was unable to use any exertions to prevent his awful fate. The New. York Herald is quite 'exultant over the fact that a number of the leading ..11indoos" of Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky and other Stater, at an entertainment in New York on Fri day evening, gave in their adhesion to Geo. Law as the "Ilindoo" candidate for the Presidency. Smaxs.---In an article in the Eleatic . Mag azine for March, on the Chemistry of Common Life, is the following paragraph : "There is a probability of compounding smells infinitely more terrific than any which nature produces, and of employing thipn in warfare either for purposes of defence or annoyance. Some substances are sufficiently atroCions in themselves. Swallow a pellet of powdered sul phur,:knd'it will diffuse a noisome atmosphere around the individual for litany days.
