The Baltimore Asterisms sincerely condemns
-the Missourians for their foray into Kansas, bat
seeks to throw the responsibility for it en the
North. It says:
"The first wrongdoing was upon the part of
the abolitionists of Ilassachusetta They viola
ted the true intent of the Nebraska act by an at
tempt to forestal and to smother the expression
of the popular will of _Kansas through the im
portation of emigrants, who went there not of
their own volition or desire but were bought up
with bribes or inducements, and fey the price of
a free passage contracted to perform the Work of
_those who swat them."
We have no doubt that the Anten'con believes
this, bat it is nevertheless unfounded. The Mas
sachusetts emigration society did not buy up or
bribe immigrants nor resort to forced immigra
tion. The people whom it sentout were all vol
. untary immigrants, who camejorward of their
own free will and paid their own way. The only
agency the society had in the matter was in ar
ranging with the railroad complain and steam
' boats en the route for a ;heap and uniform rate
of transportation, and providing for the depart-
.ore of immigrants in masses and at stated peri
ods. By this mesas the immigrants got cheaper
fare, and went out in companies; but they paid
„1 . their own way invariably. The effort to rev's
eemt_them as "paupers," and at..,bribed" to do
certain work, originated among the border ruff
ians of Missouri; and it was so low in itself that
we had hoped it would have been permitted to
it..-confined to that locality.

The Bentham papers protest against the Per.
gonna Liberty bill of Maieschusetts as a viola
tion of the CoMprondse meaiures of 1850. The
South, after violating and abjuring the Missouri
Compromise, should hold her tongue forever
about Compromises. If that Compromise eould
not be deemed sacred, what claim has any other
Compromise to public regard? • -

powers of the Assembly. -
Rev. Dr: Rowland stated that he was a mem
ber of the Buffslo Assembly, and joined in the
Protest against the action of that body on this
' subject. The ground of - his 'opposition at that
time. was solely unconstitutionality of the action
there proposed. His reasons for his position be
had afterwards stated at large, in eommtuties
tions in the New Tork Evangelist and New York
Observer. - Hie examinations of the subject had
convinced him that all the difficulties which en
vireo this subject grew out of imperfect views
respecting the constitutional power of the Assent
bly over this subject He had no sympathy for
slavery: long ego he had left the South, more
because he could not live in the midst of slavery,
than for any other lesson. He had no honor for
slavery, bet he bad honor fur the eonstittition of
the Church. • Hisargument was not for the de
fense of slavery,- nor to excuse these-In the prao
tice of it. It was only his regard for the consti
tution, and his immovable conviction' is that we
can harmonise the - whole Church by understand
ing the true nature of - our compact in this body;
—what we may do and what we may not do on
this subject. He was glad the subject had taken
this shape. If - allowed to assume this form in
the decisions of the Assembly, it will do more to 'I
harmonix - e the diverts:, view prevalling the
church, than` any action ever taken on the
subject.
Rev. Dr. Wilson said that the report was the
result of a compromise in the committee. There
were those in the committee who esteemed the
action of the Assembly of Detroit—and that at
Buffalo unconstitutional; and mencwho deemed
them both as not going far enotigh. It was
thought that to reaffirm the general action of
former As willhout specifying the action
of any particular Assemblies, would avoid all
collision of the different views entertained in
respect to them.
Bev. Dr. Bullard would like to have the action
of the Assembly up to 1953 approved.
Ray. Mr. Hoyt suggested that the substitution
! of the word "testimony" for "action"—so that
! it would read that the Assembly re-affirmed the
testimony of the previous Assemblies on the sin
-fulness of slavery. ' . .
Rev. Mr. White Said that he wished to have
the action of the Buffalo Assembly expressly dis
avowed.
BAT. Dr. Campbell's first impression on hear
ing the report was, that he should oppose the first
resolution, but on re-examining the report, be
I thought it wts worded with extreme care .and
felisity. It does not refer to slaveholding ; it
refers only to the sinfulness of the system of
slavery; and it only re-affirms what has been
said by Assemblies of all years and all complex
. ions. -He hoped that the amendment which out
off the- pastoral letter would be withdrawn. • :
Patton Howell, Esq., of Tennessee, could not
give the report - his approval, for it did not ex-,
press what he thought to be the truth. It as-i
mates the essential sinfulness of the relation of
master and slave. This he could not admit. It;
is true that sinful incidents are often connected
with-the relation; and what relation in life iq
there out of which sin may not arise? The 1.
Istionof husband and wife may give occasion t
sin; and so may any other relations of life. Bn
this does notprovethe sinfulness of this relatio
Slavery his its evils, but they are not essential
to the system. And he was opposed to the MO;
suably taking action declaring the sinfulness of
slavery.
He did not believe that the relation of master
and slave was injurious. He knew of many pit
ens men who held elaves—ss good men as any
men living- Itlet alone, these men and others '
will gradually ameliorate the evils of the spas& '
and prepare the way for a Reseed removal of
the whole thing. He thought that this reaffirm
ing the action of past Assemblies was not only
rewaserting what was in itself not true, but is
puerile in itself. It ought also to be considered
that a perpetual reiteration implies a doubt of
the sincerity of what hes been before uttered.—
It is as if the Moderator's beautiful wife were
year by year to demand a renewal of the marriage
ceremony and the nuptial vows ; would it not Im
ply
some suspicion of the sincerity of his former
TOM and the constancy of his affection? Bede-
preested any action which will discourage and
alienate the South. They have diffieultieeenough !
to encounter without being obliged to carry the I
odium of injudicious action on the part of their', ,
brethren.
Bev. Joel Jewell, of lowa, was struck with the
propriety of the simile of Mr. Howell, respect
ing the marriage relation. It was true that we
are married to the South, and he had a copy
of the marriage contract in his hand; one arti
cle of which he would take the liberty to read:
"The tins forbidden in the Eighth COMMIMI
- besides the man-stealn of the duties required,
are theft, robbery, ing, and receiving
anything that is etolen: fraudulent dealing, false
weights and measures, removing landmarks; in
justice and unfaithfulness in contracts between
man and man, or in =tun of trust, oppression,
extortion, users, bribery, vexatious lawsuits,
=just inclosures and depopulation', engrossing
commodities t.. enhance the price, unlawful call
ings and *Bother unjust or sinfol ways of taking
or witholdint from our neighbor what belongs to
him or of enriching ourselves; covetousness, in
oidinate prizing anti effecting worldly goods;
distrustful and distracting cares and studies in
getting, keeping, and using them; envying at
the prosperity of others; as likewise, idleness,
prodigality, wasteful seeming, and all other
ways whereby we do unduly prejudice our ont,-
ward estate." • '
The tethimoni, be went on to say, of the As
sembly, ever- since its organization, has. been
uniform and ins One direction—never hesitating
to affirm the sinfulness of slavery. Yet now Ire
are told that we must not only cease to say this,
but take it back—not only. decline to utter a re
affirmation, but -to withhold it on the avowed
ground that slavery is not sinful, but right. Mr.
Jewett defended the action of the Buffalo As
sembly. The principle of propounding biota,
ries, and enjoining specific attention to particu
lar evils, has been Acted on by the Assembly at
all times. He read from the minutes several in
stances where the Assembly has instructed the
Presbyteries to,take special notice of particular
sins—as Sabbath breaking, dancing &a. Yet
these instructions were never opposed because
they were inquisitive, nor rebelled against -be-.
cause they were unconstitutional. He had no
'liaise to crowd this subject; yet be could never'
consent to any retractions. Re was not an Abo
litionist, in the technical sense of the word, and
desired no new measures. He approved the re
port because it leaves the; Assembly just where
it always has stood—on theiround of consistent, '
constitutions!, and manly hostility to slavery.
Be,. Mr. Caldwell, of Tennessee, said that he
come to the Acnembly in the hope that the unity
of the Church would be Preserved. If the re
port bad been such thatthe South could swallow
at all, he would net object; for he appreciated
the feeling which Induced this - yearly agitation.
But be could never assent to a report which Im
plies a - eharr ethat slavery Is sinful. We have
been told that there is no right toe slave but a
stolen right Cat what is the origin of slavery?
