Christian man was opposed to Christian Union.
The -Union of the Church of God Is an 'mat.
• liaised point', She, is,. ever has been, and will,'
eternally, be, me. _ Yet we know that ' there are
dividons - and there are good reasons for them,
--'--- and befOre--we undertaketo remove the divisions
we mast he fully satisfaed that the reasons have
caused to hold good.' 'Nothing, he said, would be
more gratifying to; him, more joyful - to hie soul,
than Union,, but he did not believe, the 'parties
, were in a proper state to enter into it. - Union
'_.,-:' _ h a s a been: attempted in Canada in past years . and
, ow the churches are farther apart than ever.-
He was present when the diaraptiontook place in
-'' . the' Established Church. Scarcely had that
event transpired wheiia Union was proposed.-
.:
He ventured to say. they were farther apart now
; than they were them ' He had never- known an
attempt undo to bring the R. P. Church into a
~....,‘ e nicin, but it turned out to' be a union - of absorb
. tioti. When you loin this to that, thief absorbs
ii that Mid dat loses its identity. Synod may do--
peed upon it they can gain nothing and may
lose something by this Onion.
Dr. A.. W. Black followed. He said the gum
' tlon is, are- ein favor of Union on the Basis as
presented by the•A. It.. Synod! That basis does
- not bear favorable comparison with the basis on
which this church hes already taken action.-
On the plan of this basis, we cannot unite with
'.:out producing a division in our own church, be
, cause there are many in our midst who are not
`., prepared to give up onr distactimprinciples. We
have had a better plan titan this, viz: a plan of
Union by'Confederation. • 11 regretted that it
hid not prevailed And been adopted. It is the
..., true method and.will , eventually unite the differ
.-. eat depart nude of God's Church, included in
- the great Preshyterian. family. • Dr. Black ro:
'fared to the - provisions of the Chnfederacy.- I
"•
She only difference between this and the present I
, pilau is that the confederacy leaves us to pro.
serve our distinctise pecaliarities, responsible
for them only to God. Under this plan, a aye.
• Lein of Education, „Sabbath Schools, Foreign and
Home Missions, Sm., would- be conducted in one
..-... grand association: Dr. Black spas farther of
• `the advantages of a confederation, ands:pressed
the belief. that would finally ultimate in an or
genic Onion of all the bodies „embraced by it.-'
individual congregations will find that the main
' tabance of their peculiarities is not for the glo
ry of God or the good of the chunk - and will
- ask their Synods to bring the 1111i01111 elements
.• . of the confederation. into a still nearer anion.
Rev. It. J. Black was not opposed. to Union
, . but he was opposed to any. efforts which would
-.., sestslt in a• division of those already cordially
•,' united. The inevitable tendency of this matter
. • of. Union is to cause a rupture among • ourselves.
_ - ."Many of us-most of ms-have been born, reared
and.educated in the R. P. Cherish. It is the
church of our fathers, and we lora it devotedly.
And many of no would rather oppose Union, than
see it divided. It is very proper, he said; form
- a fraternal' nion between those not united among
, , themslres. It is well known that the A. R.
Church is divided and until those divisions are
healed, we 'should not meddle with the sob
--, ject, 'We are added ourselves, and Christian
' ' union, like charity, should begin at home. He
slated that the A. R. Synod, at Philadelphia, had
, .:,- given its ministers a very wide margin in regard
"--- to singing hymns when occupying General As
-" sembly pulpits, and opposed any union with a
church not sound on - that question. He ohjeeted

Rel. Wzn:Calderirodd said ke was ardently in
favor of Union. In the scope of his observalion,
he hail frequentlymet with localities where there
were_ weak A. K. and B. P. congregations,
scarcely able to sustain an independent era
, tuna. A Union world"' enable such congrega
tions to join forces and give ample support to a
pastor. Ire thought the basis before Synod did
not require the church to sacrifice a solitary
principle. A union by confederation was better
than noun:, and ..he hoped Synod:would not ad
journ until some step towards Union be made. _ •

J. Clu7stie, and S. Sterrit thought it should
