Deor Sir :—Ever since the for
mation of our government, one of the most
prminent political questions has been that of,
slavery. The founders of the Republio and the
framers of the Constitution regarded slavery as
an accidental evil, which was to be gradually and
speedily obliterated. The Northern States in
which this ern existed, one after another abolish
ed It, and the Southern States would no titubt
have eventually followed in the same course, had
not a new phase of commerce suddenly enhanced
the value of slave labor. Up to this period the
Constitution had been universally regarded
favorable to freedom, but when the South be- as
I
came determined to uphold, strengthen and per- ,
petnate this- peculiar institution, the great mo
tive that inspired the slaveholders was, that the
government and Constitution ehould be made to
recognise slavery as a permanent,lnstitution.—
Their great ambition snared to subjugatiartbe
whole continent to their sway; and this all-eon
trolling Idea has kept undisputed possession of
the souther mind for several generations. The
hereditary traditions of the Russian Czar's could
not be more firmly rooted in the minds of each
succeeding generation, than Is this fixed in the
policy of the Soothers States of this atinfederst
oy. The slave power has had Its plans matured
and its policy as distinctly marked out as hare
the Czars in the will of Peter the Great;-end
the Enaidatia do not pant for the time when they
can sit down en the - Bosphorus, more anxiously
thart . do the protothies.of our Southern States

The give power early became aggreseive: and
slowly- and surely accomplished its aims. Con
cession after concession has been made by the
North, until forbearance has long since ceased to
be a virtue. The slaveholders have been so Imo
ceitsful in wrenching from the Northern States,
everything they desired, that they have reached
the crowning point of their policy sooner than
they expected. Tha„North has at last become
aroused to its danger, and there is now a mani
festation displayed, which bide fair either to roll
back the tide of slavery aggression forever, or
else the North must meekly give up all, and Per
mit the three hundred thousand slave-drivers to
lord it over the whole eatuary. There can be no I
amalgamation. between Freedota.and Slavery.—
For three quarters of a century has this capon
merit been undergoing a solution, and.now it is
clear to demonstration that . .very soon liberty
must be high enthroned in this nation both in
name and fact, or else the black flag of the most
hideous• despotiam that ever cursed the earth,
must wave in triumph over our beloved country.
This is no high-flown theory. The evidence is so
clear that "be who runs may read." The most
momentous era in our nation's history is now-be
ing ushered in. The result of the forthcoming
;conflict will go down to the judgment of the re-
Mottet.posterity ; and it behooves every North
ern miusto perform Medal faithfully, so that
that result may redound.to the cause of ha
rem:ay and religion. Whit o responsibility rests
Open every freeman in the North! Would that
each might duly appreciate the Providential cir
cumstances which have placed such vast power
for perpetual good or evil in his hands.
There can be no shadow of a doribt, that the
scheinee ettlioSouthens oligarchfi could be easily
frustrated, if the North were only fully resolved
to take a firm etand.l , Unfortunately, we have
always been betrayed into the bands of our ene
mies by traiters in our own ranks. , And now in
Hew of the fact theta final and decisive collision
between the forces of Freedom and Slavery is
inevitable, it would be the part of wisdom to
measure well the amount of "aid and comfort"
that our enemies are likely toreccive from men
and parties in our midst; and if the North is to
he subdued,..it will be gratifying , now and here
after, to know by whose instrumentality such a
calamity boa been brought upon us.
The elections of last year plainly. showedthat
there is a North,--and that it is ready to take up
the gauntlet. The last act of slavery aggression
met with a eignah and general rebruce, and the
recreants of the North who took part in favor
of the internees Nebraska swindle, received their
quietus from their constituents; and the Ad
ministration, which also twisted in forcing that
iniquitous measure upon the country, has been
left a miserable and friendless nuteast—from the
highest elevation it bas descended so low that
none can be found "so poor to do it reverence."
This Anti-Slavery demonstration struck terror
into the hearts of the aggressors am:4o4r time
serving Nortbernabettors and allieth. — Prominent
Southern journals were dolorotisti - predlal
that for once they had gone step too far, and
that in their eagerness to snatch' the coveted
prize, they.uot only missed it, but had actually
raised up a power that might posibly compel
them to disgorge same of their ill-gotton gains,
and put a stop to further encroachments But
suddenly a glimmer of hope was espied in the
distance! A newparty hadsprunginto existence,
which might - lave them from utter discomfiture,
and they rushed into-its embraCe with an alacrity
that showed how desperate was their case. And
subsequent events bare proved that their hopes
were well founded.
The Know Nothing organization undertook to
.stem the tide of Anti-Slavery sentiments. In
dubitable evidence could be produced to show
that the Slavery question was to be ignored in
tbeir councils and deliberations. And if the
North is to he thwarted in its efforts to place
the General Government where it was designed
to be placed by the wise and good men who
founded it; on the side of Liberty, Justice, and
Human Rights,--it will be by this new order,
which would fain plant itself on the rotten re
mains of the old defunbt parties,--the parties
repudiated and cast off for their unbounded ser
vility to the slave-drivers. I hope that - the
secret party will take a "sober second thought,"
and come out upon the side of Freedom; - change
their midnight hatchings for the republican and
democratio principle of free diem - lesion; unite
with the Anti-Nebraska sentiment; and pro
claim to the world that they will demand the re
eitabliehment of the Missouri Compromise, the
Repeal of the Fugitive. Slave Law, Ac. Than
they will serve their country, proven blessing to
mankind, and deserve the gratitude of future
generations. There is a bare possibility of sue
ceeditig in checking the expansion of Slavery
without the assistance of this new element in
our politics; but if the Know Nothings are not
for us, they are against us. There can be no
evasion; no parleying;.no third party in the last
gigantic contest with the slave parser. lam
glad therefore to observe that the Omette, true
to Be character as a free and independent jour
nal, is prepared to meet the enemies of Liberty,
no matter under 'What deceptive guise they may
make their appearance.
I had intended to allude briefly to ono or two
other elements in the North, which are tacitly
acknowledging ti'" lead of the Slave power, but
they are ineigniticant when.compered with the
new political party which is now in such odor
in quarters where we were wont to look for undi
luted Anti-Slavery sentiments, and I therefore

The Portland Advertiser gives an account of
the 'jugular effect of lightning which occurred
on Monday evening lass, 14th ins; at tie o'clock,
at the house of Cept. David Upton, of Great
Chebesnue Island, Me. The house was struck
by lightning daring the storm. A neighbor who
was locking at the house at the time, perceived •
ball of fire, apparently a foot in diameter, with
a trail thirty yards long, descend upon the chime.

from the hips to the foot, and is In a precarious

about the head and face. His child, to his arms,
was unhurt also his wife, standing near, and

But the effects of the lightning about the
premises are astonishing. Old Mr. Upton was
eating a bowl of bread and milk, with one hand
upon the bowl, the °thee holding the spoon—the
bowl wan broken in his hand, sod the spoon had
not been found. Old Mrs. Upton bad a cup of
tea in her hand, and when she came to herself
ehe wan partly under the table, with a piece of
the cup in her baud, and herself covered with
the wreck of the chimney, among which was •
piece of timber, from the front of the flee place,
eight feet long, with a flat bar of iron of the
name length attached. •

EXIGRATION.—The heavy tide of eastern emi
gration appears to be somewhat checked at the
present, to be resumed in the autumn. The ten
dency of reports of cholera on the western riv
ers has been to restrain the locomotive propensi
ty of the pioneer. •We are glad to observe that
the falling off from the eastern States is made
up by the daily arrivals overland of large cov
ered wagons from lowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Il
linois, &e , in which are packed all the parapher
nalia of the form and fireside. ready tor distribu
tion in their proper places as soon as •a claim is
selected.
Our western people understand . pioneer life,
and know how to prepare for it. They come
to remain; and rarely.are they seen beating an
Inglorious retreat • Said ode Iq our hearing the
other day, "'tots difficult to procure a claim in
this immediate:vicinity, but lam confidant there
.are Ally number of good Mita not very distant,
and I =determined to find them and locate on
ono for life. I shall never return; in fact I
should feel ashamed- to do so, for my old neigh
bors would say at once that I had been frightened
away by the right of a Missourian'a revolver or
bowie knife. No sir, I shall remain„ and give
my vote and influence towards making Kansas
free State." Such are the material - who come
from the West—single-handed, accustomed to
toil, and the rough of life; they do nut shrink
away when brought in direct competition
with difficulties, bat brace themselves for the
ebock, and triumph, as energy and perseve
rance will on similar occasions.
We shall soon pass through the forming stage
of society, then the finished workmen of New
England will be needed in the Senses. valley;
but at present we want the "bone and sinew, this
hard fisted yeomanry," who can prepare the soil,
and fit it for the abode of refinement, wbo,can
grapple. with /Ire in its rudest form, .and that
without repining el the ways of Providence. We
also want the hard laboring , mechanio—cot the
architect,' who plans and directs—hut he who
wills and 'executes, surmounting every apparent
impossibility, and without material, only as it is
found In the quarry or the forest, can erect
shelters and protection from the storm for. those
who command his labor.
Society in its rude state Cattl7ot afford to ex
pend. mearie in the erection of costly structures
or inornamedtel- furnitrire. Utility and neces
sity muse 'be blended,. and with econemy they
must struggle together, and together triumph.—
A few years hence and the towering steeple and
the gilded' dome will take the place of. Abe rude
cabin for public resort; and tasty residences,
adorned with shrubbery and all the garniture
which,makes.home a paradise will be found here
in abandance. Till then we'must labor and work
and emigration should be of a character to aid
in moulding all things into:proper form for that

The London Herald correspondent gives the
following account' of the English fight for the
rifle pits on the 19th
April 20.—The English had sharp fighting in
the trenches last night, and succeeded in captor-'
ring the first of the rifle pits. This was the pit
to which I have already en frequently alluded
as having canoed such amorous and loss.to.our
working parties in our new advanced trench:—
Last night an attempt was made to continue the
parallel, bet the sharpshooters' fire was so gall-'
ing, that it was impossible to persevere without
en unwarrantable loss of life. Orders were then
sent down for 250 of the covering party. an the
right attack (composed entirely of regiments
from the Light Dir)sion) to advance and capture
the pit. The men accordingly inured down
quietly to where the advanced. work terminated,
close to the first trench. CoL Graham Egerton,
field officer in charge of the trenches, led the
Party-
At a given signal, our gallant fellows dashed
from the breastwork, and, with a smothered
cheer, ran straight upon the trench. The enemy
appeared completely surprised, and fired a scat
tered volley. One of these shots unfortunately
killed Captain Dudley Lempriere, of the 77th,
on the spot, as he was in the act of oheering on
the men. The instant the volley was fired, the
Russians sprang out of the trench, without any
further attempt at resistance, and began flying
in all directions. Some were shot as they ran,
but the majority escaped -
The trench was immediately occupied by such
of our troops as it would contain, (about fifty)
while the others endeavored to reverse the and
bags, so as to cover the men from the Russian
side, In case of an attempt to retake It. . While
engaged.ln this manner, a column of Russians,
about one thousand strong, wu observed advan
cing from the abetter of the M a / a koff, and hard
ly had Col. Egerton time to dispose hip . men in
such a manner as best to contend against the
overpowering force, when the enemy rushed up
and tried to close ith the trench.
They were received with a heavy Tolley, before
which, those who survived recoiled In terror, and
stood for a moment as if uncertain or irresolute
how to act. They were not, however,. left long
to deliberate, for as fast as our men could load
they fired into their hesitating assailants, who,
as if to save themselves, again tried to close.
This time their attack was more determined, and
an obstinate fight took place. Those that closed
with our troops wore met with the bayonet and
hurled back again, while nose that had sprang
into the pit were killed on the instant- Col. i
Egerton was In the midst of the contest, cheer- 1
leg and animating ,the soldiers, when he was
struck with a bullet which killed him in the
course of a few minutes, though not before the
enemy were again driven back. After the ecc
end repulse, the Russians contented themselves
with skirmishing behind atones and hillocks at
a safer distance, and after collecting their woun
ded, retired to their eerie without an attempt
to renew the !struggle. Our troops remained in
possession of the tund r a:ire cleated for a short
time after the enemy , had retired.. The batteries
then opened, and knowing, donbtleto, the pre
else range, we suffered severely teem some of the
shells, and the round shot also injured the new
work, but not to any extent. After the cannon-1
