Allegheny river unexpectedly rose
several feet on Friday, night, and on Saturday
morning between eight tualnine-o!eloek, the lin
, mime fleet of rafts at and about Herr's Lsland
darted vableintld nee borne away by the resist
: eau and Impetuous current. We take the follow
ing Parsgmph fr om &Muds, arming's Ameri-
."Some Uty rafts of timber, boards - and scent
linguifty, of them Laded with shingles and fur
nialied with cabins for the lower market—were
afloat upon the stream in wild confmion: Most
Cr them were Crippled in the start by having
their oars unshipped. Some floats were maned,
some doubly - so, and =say fleets of three and
four rafts together sere without-a tam to guide
them. At the Iffeshanim' street bridge the des
truction ' commenced in earnest, and but forth
_ rafts of the fast 6=l=l=o without more or 161
injury. Thermo:tents of this wreck, beingen
tirely unmanagable, ran promiscuously upon the
piers of the Aqueduct, and formed a perfect
gorge from the third pier to the Alleghenyahore,
where there is now piled up in the greatest con
fusion the fragments of not less than twenty
raps: Almost immediately - on the heels of the
first fleet came a second of still larger Bite, which
being subjected to the additional obstruction of
t h e t o nging fragments at everrgee of the vari
ous bridges shared a still worse fa ;•
—We are informed that a fleet of ruts moored
at Pine Creek also broke loose and joined in the
genera - stampede: • Altogether there must hate
have toien sixty rafts floating at the esmo time
within a distance of a few miles. We stood upon
the St. Clair street Bridge as the vibe were com
ing down and the scene was as ruiparallelled as
it was deplorable. The entire surface of the
river was thickly dgtted over with unbroken
rafts, fragments of rafts and isoleted logs and
boards., Some of them. had three or fear
men on board, some two, some cue, and
_may were' guided only by the current of
the stream. The bitter were almost sure to strike
a pier and the collisions invariably separated them
• into still smaller fragments. We saw
.probablyb
- a dozen that sere manned strike upon he
and in several instances the courageous raftamen,,
were compelled to leap from one fragment - to an
other to avoid being hurled =aid the crashing-
- timbers. The coolness and self-possession of
the hardy Tetiollell was marked and admired by
the hundreds who witnessed the unusual scene ,
. from the bridges and shores.
Scarcely a pier of the four bridges was free
from the shattered remnants of broken rafts,
and the - scarcely submerged piers of the new
railroad bridge, even, canted the destruction of
one or tws log raft.' But tew succeeded in get
. tins moored—the current being so impetuous as
to defy all such efforts. As stated above by the
' Ameri=n, a number of rafts gorged at the Alle
gheny side of the &Ravine._ They will an
probably be saved.
Considering the perilous position of those on
the rafts, it is singular that many lives were not
lost. We beard of but one fatal accident. As a
log raft was approaching the Mechanic's street
siridge, the Mau at the sweep ran to the end
nearest the pier, expecting to getwhen it
struck. The-collision, however, threw him
amongst the logs and he soon disappeared be, ,
neath the waters. We were unable to learn his
name: Almost a fatal accident occurred to Mr.
Allan McCune, of this city. lie was 'tending
on a raft moored at the Pittsburgh side, when a
cable caught his legs and he was precipitated
into the river and drawd under the raft. Fortu
nately, however, he was rescued from a watery

Coroner Lowry held an inquest on Saturday
and the Jury returned a verdict of suicide.
We understand the deceased was a man of in
temperate habits,. and no doubt wad laboring un
der the terrible mania indiced by excessive
drinking, at the time be committed the rash
deed. In the summer of 1654, when residing on
- Wylie street, in this city, he attempted to take
his life la - the same manner and was only pre
vented by being cut down before life was ex-
duct. On Tuesday last, he made another at
tempt of the same kind but vfas presented by
;he timely interference of his wife. Coroner
'Lowry states that the last and fatal attempt, was,
to his knowledge, the fourth. Cunningham was
a ship carpenter by trade,:and was betweenfor
' ty-five and fifty years of age. Ho was a native
of Ireland.
A COILESCTION DEICARDT.D.—Vie have received
ffletter dated "Baltimore, May 4, IS-55," signed
"T. B.. Wilson," stating that the Gazette same
two weeks ago notieed Mr. Wilson's resignation
of his pastoral charge of the Sixth Presbyterian
Church, in this city, assigning, as a reason, ill
health. - "This was incorrect," he states.' "and I
find has made a false and injurious impression
* * * My reasons published from the pulpit
were, inadequate support and the embarrassed
state of the church."
We allow Mr. Wilson to correct the error in
his own language, merely remarking that we as
signed !'ill health" as the cause of his resignation
upon the authority of common report. which,
perhaps in this case as in, many others, was in
correct. In the course of 'Mr. Wilson's letter, he
remarks in a very pompons way that had be been
in Pittsburgh at the time our notice was pub
lished he "would have. demanded the correction
at. once." We would merely remark to Mr. W.
that . we.do not furnish corrections on demand
and it is very probable that had' be taken the
course he speaks of, his demand would not have
been honored to the extent of one line. Mistakes
will occur and so will tempers get out of order.
